USA Network’s Burn Notice season three finale on August 6 at 9p, averaged 7.6 million total viewers, making it the most-watched series telecast in the network’s history. Based on Nielsen’s Live+ Same Day data, the season ender bested USA’s premiere of The 4400, attracting 7.4 million viewers on July 11, 2004.

Since Paula Abdul announced her departure from FOX’s American Idol, she has received at least two other broadcast job offers. The first was a guest judging stint offer from FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance executive producer/judge Nigel Lythgoe. The other overture came from ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson as he spoke during ABC’s TV Critics Association Press tour. McPherson said over the weekend he would like to have Abdul join ABC’s Dancing with the Stars reality series. After initially reaching out to Abdul following her announcement, McPherson said he will have further discussions with her about projects at ABC, emphasizing though no formal plans have been made but that “all possibilities are open.”

Fine Living Network (FLN) began airing the 13-episode docu-series Mr. Friday last Friday at 9p. The half-hour series, acquired from Beyond Distribution is about former Canadian model Derek Friday who is forced by his rich and philanthropic mother to switch places with a hard-working person who will receive his weekly trust fund check.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Trifecta Entertainment & Media announced two MTV series, Laguna Beach and The Hills are launching in national syndication on September 21 in more than 80% of US TV households. Thirty percent of stations will air each series consecutively as a Monday-Friday strip, starting with all 44 episodes of Laguna Beach then continuing with all 70 episodes of The Hills. Stations choosing this pattern include KDOC/Los Angeles, WGN/Chicago, KTXA/Dallas, KRON/San Francisco, WDCW/Washington, D.C., KSTW/Seattle, WMOR/Tampa and WUAB/Cleveland. Stations elsewhere will air a weekly hour of The Hills with two 30m episodes airing back-to-back or as two separate weekly half-hours. Stations committed to airing a weekend hour of The Hills include WPIX/New York, KYW-WPSG/Philadelphia, WLVI/Boston, WATL/Atlanta and WMYD/Detroit. Still other stations will air both the strip and the weekly hour format. Station groups involved with airing Laguna Beach and The Hills are Tribune, CBS, Sinclair, Raycom, Hearst, Belo, Newport, Meredith, Media General, Young, Nexstar, Titan, Granite, Journal Broadcasting and Communications Corporation.

Lifetime Networks picked up the exclusive basic cable rights to three Sony films: Obsessed, starring Beyonce Knowles; The Ugly Truth headlined by Katherine Heigl; and the just opened Julie & Julia, with Meryl Streep playing Julia Child. All three are scheduled to premiere on Lifetime and Lifetime Movie Network in 2011.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT  ~

FX approved production for a low-budget 30m comedy pilot featuring stand-up comedian Louis C.K. The project, tentatively titled Louie, is about Louis’ real-life as a divorced father of two kids. The plot is relayed through stand-up routines and Louis acting with other actors playing his kids, ex-wife and friends. Louis was also recently selected by NBC to join the cast of Parks and Recreation for the new season in several episodes, playing a potential love interest for Amy Poehler’s character.

MTV okayed a series order for a yet-to-be-titled variety/comedy project headlined by actor/dancer Robert Hoffman. Based on Hoffman’s website punchrobert.com, the series is a mixture of hidden camera, comedy and dance. Hoffman will executive produce the project along with his manager, Impression Entertainment’s Michael Baum. Currently, Hoffman can be seen in the feature film Aliens in the Attic.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  France-based ad conglomerate Publicis won the bidding war over Microsoft’s digital ad agency Razorfish (formerly Avenue A/Razorfish) to position itself as a leader in the growing internet ad business. Japan’s ad giant Dentsu actually came in with a higher offer, but Microsoft decided to sell to Publicis instead – the two also struck a “strategic alliance agreement” around the deal that will steer the agency’s clients toward Microsoft products such as display and Bing search ads. The cash and stock transaction, Publicis’ second biggest in the digital space following its $1.6 billion purchase of Digitas in 2006, is valued at approximately $530 million.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.    

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Cartoon Network and Warner Horizon Television unveil the cast for the live-action hour-long scripted pilot Unnatural History (working title), which begins production this month in Toronto, Canada.  The adventure series revolves around the challenges faced by Henry Griffin, a teen who has been traveling the world with his anthropologist parents and thinks he’s seen everything … until he returns to the US to attend high school.  The cast includes: Kevin G. Schmidt (Princess Protection Program, The Young and the Restless) as Henry; Jordan Gavaris (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as Jasper; and Italia Ricci (Greek, Aaron Stone) as Maggie.  Unnatural History is created/written by Mike Werb (Face/Off, The Mask) and directed by Mikael Salomon (Band of Brothers, The Andromeda Strain, The Company). Thursday  A18-49 Analysis: FOX was #1 Thursday night with A18-49 at 3.5/11, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. During the first two hours of primetime, FOX’s final finale of So You Think You Can Dance dominated: at 8p the show posted a 3.0/11 followed by CBS’ Big Brother at 2.3/8; then at 9p, FOX moved up a notch to 4.0/12 with UNIV’s Manana Para Es Siempre next at 2.0/6. CBS’ repeat of The Mentalist claimed first place through 10p with 1.7/5 while UNIV’s Mujeres Asesinas was second with 1.3/4.

Effective September 1, Susan Sullivan will become VP/News for NBC Local Media New York. Susan will relocate to New York to supervise the daily news operations of WNBC, NY Nonstop and NBCnewyork.com. Prior to this upcoming appointment, Susan was VP/News with KNTV, the NBC station in San Jose/San Francisco since November 2007.

Donn Carper joined Tribune Broadcasting’s KTLA-TV in the local sales department to sell and develop new business, promoting all of Tribune’s products.  Congratulations Donn!
