Cynopsis: Kids!

4/30/07

Good morning. It’s Monday, April 30, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Sun TV Network launched Chutti TV, a new TV channel for K2-14, in India over the weekend.  The 24/7 channel features a programming line-up include animated series such as Jack Chan Adventures, He man, Men in Black, Astroboy as well as preschool shows like Dora the Explorer.  Additionally, the channel will feature original series, including the early morning show Chutti Yoga, Rumbumbum and a talent search program, a game/challenge series among others.  Sun TV Network is said to be considering three other kid-targeted channels, per IndianTelevision.com.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

David Goyer will direct the Fox and Marvel Studios live-action Magneto feature film, a spin-off of the X-Men live-action movies.  Goyer, best known as the writer of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight (2008) as well as the Blade movies, will develop the Magneto movie from a screenplay by Sheldon Turner.  The body of the film will focus on the mutant Magneto’s origins, which begs the question what will Magneto be rated?  The movie will be set in the 1940s and 50s, thus including the portion of Magneto’s life that was spent in a Nazi concentration camp, which viewers previously glimpsed in the X-Men movies that were all rated PG-13.  While the movie will feature a young actor (TBD) as Magneto, Sir Ian McKellen, who portrayed the character in the X-Men trilogy, is also expected to be in the film.

While the rumor that actress Sarah Michelle Gellar will star as Harley Quinn in the movie The Dark Knight, has been around for some time now, it was particularly strong over the last several days.  Stay tuned on this one.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The cast The N’s Degrassi: The Next Generation and the cast of the Broadway musical, Spring Awakenings, will take part in an discussion about teen issues today in NYC.  Actor Zack Braff, extremely popular with tweens/teens for his role on Scrubs, will introduce the event, which will be hosted by Rosie O’Donnell.  Also on hand will be Dr. Tiffany Brown, a teen specialist.  The discussion will be recorded by AOL’s teen site Red and clips of the event rolling out online on both AOL Red and The-N.com in mid-May coinciding with the launch of the new summer season of The N’s Degrassi: The Next Generation in June.

Kabillion, the multi-platform kids service, has launched Curl It with Cobi, a soccer and fitness series staring Major League Soccer player Cobi Jones.  Curl It With Cobi is available on both Kabillion VOD channel on Comcast Cable systems and the show will stream on its broadband site ( http://www.kabillion.com/).

As Disney’s Beauty and the Beast nears the end of its 13-year run on Broadway, comes word that Donny Osmond will rejoin the cast as the expert expectorator, Gaston.  Osmond will play Gaston on the show’s final night July 29, 2007.  Beauty and the Beast is moving out as Disney’s Broadway musical version of The Little Mermaid prepares to move in.

In other Broadway news, Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein, an adaptation of his movie of the same name, will make its out of town tryout in Seattle August-4-September 1, 2007, per Variety.  If all goes as planned Young Frankenstein will be “puttin’ on the Ritz” on Broadway with a Halloween 2007 opening night.  Like it was when the movie was originally (1974), Young Frankenstein continues to be popular tweens and teens (not to mention their parents), only now on DVD instead of in theaters.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Sony Online Entertainment has launched its downloadable Stargate Online Trading Card Game, which is based on the MGM sci-fi TV series Stargate.  Meanwhile, MGM has entered into a license deal with Comic Images to publish a physical edition of the game.  The initial set of SG-1 cards includes a Through the Gate program that allows players to redeem a full set of digital cards and a corresponding set of physical cards.  Digital SG-1 starter decks and booster packs are currently available for $10.99 and $3.49, respectively.
