Good morning, it’s Monday, April 27, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

MySpace has already found a new head honcho. As was rumored the company announced the hiring of Owen Van Natta as its new CEO, the former Chief Revenue Officer of Facebook who was instrumental in negotiating the early $240 million investment from Microsoft in the social network. Owen will be based in Los Angeles and report to Jon Miller, CEO of Digital Media and Chief Digital Officer for News Corp. Meanwhile music sharing venture Project Playlist, which Owen was recently hired to run, named MTV veteran and co-founder John Sykes as its new CEO.


Television has the power to enlighten, create awareness and encourage positive change.

Continuing with its cost cutting measures Yahoo is shuttering its GeoCities personal home page  service, a relic left over from the days before blogs and social networks. Yahoo has stopped taking on new GeoCities accounts and will notify current users about how to save their data once the service is shut down for good this summer.
Following the early integration’s of CBS’s celebrity gossip site on the Facebook Connect authentication system, has now followed suit. A link in the upper right hand corner of the CBS homepage allows users log in using their Facebook IDs, enabling them post to friends’ walls and news feeds directly from the site.


The people have spoken regarding the controversial changes made to Facebook‘s Terms of Services agreement. About 75% or more than 600,000 users voted in favor of adopting new Facebook Principles and Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, developed to calm a user revolt over changes made to the site’s Terms of Services in Feb. After the uproar, Facebook reverted to its old TOS before presenting the two new governing documents to Facebook users for a 30-day review period. With increased fame comes increased exposure to wackos. An Oklahoma City man who calls himself Citizen Quasar was arrested by the FBI last week after trying to use the micro-blogging service Twitter to incite violence, according to Wired, which has posted a copy of the arrest charges here. He was apparently willing to be martyred as part of the national “Tea Party” anti-tax protests. 
Recently revamped P2P-structured online video service Joost is looking for a buyer among America’s larger cable and satellite companies including Time Warner Cable, per CNET.
Local media service provider Internet Broadcasting has released a new version of its ibPublish online publishing platform, simplifying the process of publishing and syndicating text, images and video to multiple sites and mobile platforms.
NATPE has lined up Jordan Hoffner, Director of Content Partnerships for YouTube, to give the keynote for this summer’s third annual LATV Festival, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in LA on July 8 & 9.

A company called Spatial View had developed a special shell for the iPhone and iPod touch that enables you to view 3D images on the device’s screen without having to wear those geeky 3D glasses. A little pricey at $50, the shell was initially released with a trio of apps enabling 3D photography, image manipulation and 3D image sharing with Flickr. Spatial View is continuing to design new apps to take advantage of its 3D functionality; new releases include space invader game Hunter 3Dee and 3DeeFriends, facilitating the creation, sharing, and viewing of 3D photos via Facebook.
Looking to manage your Netflix account from your iPhone? The free PhoneFlix app from Moov Corp. does the job nicely, providing basic cue management allowing you to browse and search by genre and add or subtract titles from your queue. (Moov has also developed a version of the app for the Android OS on the G1 and the Blackberry.) The increasingly useful iTV listings app has also added Netflix queue management. Tap the MyMedia link at the bottom of the home screen to access it. Both require your accounts to be synched via email.
Madden Curse believers take note – Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu will grace the covers of EA‘s “Madden NFL 10” game this year. (Fantasy Football fans have long maintained that any player who ends up on the Madden cover follows with a poor or injury-ridden season.)

Scripps Networks is launching a new socially-oriented portal for Food Network on May 1 dubbed Food 2. Following the less is more adage, the site is colorful and refreshingly simple – putting the spotlight on recipes and community features such as upcoming UGC food challenges asking folks to submit pictures of their own creations. Of course the requisite Facebook and Twitter integrations are here, along with blog entries from contributors such as Jon Eick of SoGoodBlog fame. There is also plenty of video content here including tons of how2 outtakes from Food Network shows, but they don’t hit us over the head with it. The network is trying to create a go to destination that complements the linear network, relying instead on interactive features that make the web the vibrant place it has become.
