Good morning. It’s Monday, April 19, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
ABC‘s program development deal with ad agency Mindshare has created a new family drama which will debut as early as this summer. The Days (Tollin Robbins Prods/Touchstone) is set to debut in July and will be sponsored by Mindshare’s client Unilever. Exec Prod by John Scott Shepherd, the show’s focus is a 14 year old boy and his perception of single days in the life of his two career/three kid family. ABC has ordered up six episodes and if it performs favorably, could find its way onto the fall schedule. The program development deal between ABC and Mindshare was announced last December. Heading up the search on behalf of Mindshare is Peter Tortorici who will also exec prod the series. Per the original deal, Mindshare the production costs and will receive 50% of the ad avails within the show at airtime, as well as product integration as appropriate.
Fox has ordered up 12 eps (+ pilot) of its family comedy Quintuplets (Imagine, 20th), scheduled to make its primetime debut in late summer. The premise is simple – 5 teenage quints, two parents (Andy Richter and Rebecca Creskoff) – you do the math.
Do you think Boxing will be the next big reality focus? Could be. You know about The Contender coming midseason 2004-05 to NBC from Mark Burnett Prods/DreamWorks, and with star power including Sly Stallone, George Foreman and Sugar Ray Leonard. The second show that could potential indicate a new trend, is tentatively titled Champis coming to Fox from Endemol Entertainment, and this one has Oscar de la Hoya attached as host. Burnett’s The Contender was originally pitched to both NBC and Fox (and others) months ago, ultimately won by NBC for a $2 million price tag plus in-show ad avails. As you can imagine, there is a little concern over at the NBC/Burnett/Dreamworks camp about Fox’s new show, wondering if its a direct rip off of The Contender. Exec prod by Mike Darnell, Champ is reporting looking at a fall debut and airing for 12 weeks, thereby beating NBC to the primetime punch. Mark Burnett told Variety if the show is too similar to The Contender, he does plan legal action and said such circumstances does not entice Burnett to take future projects to Fox. He does have a project coming to Fox this year – reality series The Casino.
Coming to TBS is a new relationship reality series called Outback Jack, says Variety, and frankly this one sounds like fun. Take a dozen beautiful women, beautifully coifed and accessorized, and without previously notice drop them in the middle of the Australian Outback with a lovely Aussie named Vadim Dale. They’ll be camping, dealing with the elements, with no place to plug in a hair dryer, all while vying for the attention of the rich and gorgeous Dale. The show comes from Brush Nash/Nash Entertainment, and will be hosted by J.D. Roberto. Outback Jack debuts on June 22, following the syndicated debut of S&x and the City.
Tonight’s Premiere: The Restaurant on NBC at 10p

A big night for NBC and The Apprentice and a big night for CBS’ Survivor, but at the end of the day, it was NBC in front with a huge 11.1/29 A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research, followed by CBS 6.8/18, FOX 3.2/9, ABC 1.7/4, UPN 1.6/4, WB 0.7/2. At 8pm CBS’ Survivor outdelivered American Idol (6.0/19 from 8-830p vs. first half hour of Survivor 6.7/21) and beat repeat eps of Friends with a solid 7.4/22 over NBC’s 6.5/19 and Fox’s 4.5/13. At 9pm the first hour of The Apprentice tackled a 12.5/31 rating with some truly awesome male/female demos: W1834 16.1/40; M18-34 9.2/29; W18-49 15.5/36; M18-49 9.4/26. CBS’ CSI repeat delivered a 7.7/19, and in the face of The Apprentice, that’s a solid #2 number. At 10p, the final hour of The Apprentice took in a 14.4/36 (W18-34 18.1/46; M18-34 10.9/33; W18-49 17.7/41; M18-49 11.1/30). CBS was #2 for the hour with a 5.2/13 for Without a Trace.
NBC takes the night on Friday with an overall 2.9/10 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research fast affiliate ratings, winning each hour and finding ABC in #2 each hour all evening long. ABC was second for the night with a 2.4/9 followed by CBS 2.0/7, Fox 1.8/7, WB 1.0/4, UPN 0.7/3. At 8pm NBC led with a 2.4/10 for the first hour of Dateline, with ABC 2.2/9 for its pair of sitcoms in #2. At 9pm the second hour of Dateline delivered for NBC with a 3.1/11, with the runner up lineup the same: ABC’s sitcoms delivering a 2.2/8. At 10pm NBC’s Third Watch led the pack with a 3.1/10, followed again by ABC with 20/20’s 2.7/9 and then a repeat of Cold Case with 2.4/8.
Fox again outpaced the competition on Saturday night with a 2.6/9 A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research, with CBS in #2 with a 2.0/7, ABC 1.9/7 and NBC 1.2/4. At 8pm Fox’s pair of Cops earned a 2.6/10, ABC’s first hour of The Mummy Returns 1.8/6, CBS’ first hour of its movie Miss Congeniality 1.6/6 and NBC’s Dateline Special repeat Behind the Apprentice 1.1/4. At 9pm America’s Most Wanted found a 2.6/9, tied in share with CBS’ second hour of Miss Congeniality 2.5/9. At 10p the final hour of ABC’s movie The Mummy Returns won the hour with a 2.5/8 followed by CBS’ The District 2.0/6. The Apprentice repeat (9-11p) delivered a sad 1.3/4, but let’s face it, everyone saw it on Thursday night.
