Good morning. It’s Monday, April 12, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Given the current state of affairs with the FCC and indecency violations, it’s no real surprise the Victoria Secret annual fashion show and webcast has seen its last production. Limited Brands Inc., owner of the Victoria Secret stores, said the decision came shortly after the Super Bowl Janet Jackson debacle, in conjunction with CBS who has aired the special the last two years. The reason to pull the show was in part due to the current atmosphere, but also VS decision to put their $10 million in production dollars into the marketing budget targeted at building the stores into a stronger destination during the holiday season.
Clear Channel continues to clear its house, and has let go two more radio talk show hosts: Larry Wachs and Eric Von Hessler, the voices behind The Regular Guys show which airs weekdays on WKLS/Atlanta. According to the Wall Street Journal, the incident occurred in March when the two believed they were off the air, yet a mike was still hot and picked up their conversation. You’ll recall the FCC nailed Clear Channel with a $495,000 fine last week for an airing of The Howard Stern Show last April; was also hit in January with a $755,000 fine for Bubba the Love Sponge utterings, and if that wasn’t enough, an additional $247,500 last month thanks to Washington DC radio host Elliot Segal. Of all the fines, only Elliot Segal remains part of Clear Channel; the company dropped The Howard Stern Show last week.
New in Production/Casting/Development:
WB has given the official go for a new sketch comedy pilot with Drew Carey called The Green Screen. Featuring one of the favorite bits from Whose Line, cast members stand in front of a green screen, often not knowing what is happening behind them. The new pilot will take that initial concept and expand it to include animated backgrounds of various sets and audience suggestions. Carey will exec prod along with Ron Diamond of Acme Filmworks who will provide the animation effects.
NBC‘s limited series Revelations (Pariah) has added Tobin Bell to the cast which also includes Bill Pulham and Natascha McElhone. Variety also reports several re-castings at a number of NBC pilot projects: in the drama series Hawaii, Michael Madsen is out, Michael Biehn is in; in the untitled Marsh McCall sitcom, Beverly D’Angelo is out, Shelley Long is in; inthe untitled Tarses/Wrubel comedy project, Eric Christian Olsen is out, Michael Landes is in; and in the sitcom D.O.T.S., both Chester Gregory and JK Simmons are out, Khary Payton and Steve Hytner are in.
UPN has ordered up a sitcom project that will star Charisma Carpenter and Tyler Labine as siblings, from Paramount Network TV, Littlefield Co., and Nervous Properties. More info on this one when it becomes available. Also at UPN – comedy pilot I Do, I Did, Now What? (Cosmic, 20th) will not go forward as originally planned.
ABC’s comedy pilot Earthquake (Tollin-Robbins/Touchstone) has added Johnny Sneed to the cast, headed up by comic Earthquake who plays a husband and father of four.
Touchstone has picked up a project tentatively called Kiss & Tell about three real women who live really lousy lives, according to them. They are all in their early 20’s, live in LA, and are having trouble meeting all of their financial demands while trying to live the life they think a 20something should be living. The three women brought the idea to Touchstone because they said there is nothing on television that gives them any clue at how much their lives would ‘suck’ at their age. The three also happen to be actresses, but thus far nothing on whether they will also star in the project.
USA has ordered its pilot The 4400 (Viacom Prods, Renegade 83, American Zoetrope) to series. The sci-fi series centers around 4,400 alien abductees who are suddenly, without reason, returned to Earth.

WB has picked up Smallville and Everwood for next season, both receiving full season orders and both from Warner Bros. TV says Variety. Also on the schedule for the 2004-05 season are 7th Heaven, Gilmore Girls, and Charmed. One Tree Hill has not been given the nod as yet, though is anticipated.
