09/07/07

Good Morning.  It’s Friday, September 7, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The DISH Network will begin airing Big Ten Network in time for this weekend’s lineup of football games.  As part of the America’s Top 100 package, Big Ten can be seen on Channel 429.  And if that’s not enough, as of next weekend, DISH will carry the hi-def Big Ten Network feed. The coverage by DISH gives this network a total household subscriber base of 28.5 million. The network itself launched a week ago, but has been in a tangle with a handful of local cable operators over coverage and tier placement.

Tonight’s Premieres:
National Geographic Channel:
Dog Whisperer at 8p

Tonight’s Finales:

Saturday’s Premieres:

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

ABC Entertainment and Warner Bros. TV struck a new kind of digital deal that gives ABC.com the rights to stream four WB-produced shows airing on ABC for up to four weeks after they air.  ABC gets to keep the ad revenue generated during the first year, then WBTV gets the rights to stream episodes of Pushing Daisies, Men in Trees, Notes from the Underbelly and Big Shots the following year on multiple outlets (with the ABC brand attached). Warner Bros. can also sell downloads of the shows a year after they originally air. The arrangement is a twist on the usual arrangement that gives production studios the digital sell-through rights and networks revenue from ad-supported streaming.

Chef and restaurateur Ralph Pagano will host a new high-def series Pressure Cook on MOJO starting October 14 at 930p. During each of the ten half-hour episodes, Ralph will be dropped in a different location such as Iceland, Mexico, Belize and Italy, and will have to cook wherever he is to earn transportation money home. The series is produced by Helicon Media.

ABC Family’s sophomore season premiere of Lincoln Heights Tuesday night (8p) drew in 614,000 A18-49 viewers, 811,000 P12-34 viewers and 1.6 million total viewers.

TLC debuts Fashionably Late with Stacy London just in time for the holidays on November 23 at 10p. Six one-hour episodes of the talk show hosted by Stacy London of TLC’s What Not to Wear will present a weekly look at celebrities through a fashion lens with tips, trends and gossip. The program is produced by BBC Production USA.

NBC Universal Television Distribution’s latest nationally syndicated series The Steve Wilkos Show launches September 10. The former head of security with The Jerry Springer Show and Chicago police officer, will interview and take on criminals, dispensing his version of “protecting and serving” the audience and viewers. The daily one-hour talk show is taped in front of a live studio audience at WMAQ/Chicago.

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution licensed Volume 41, a 35-title movie package, to stations in 133 markets around the country, a 90% clearance of the U.S. The feature film package has been cleared on the Fox O&O stations in 11 markets: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Washington, D.C., Houston, Phoenix, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Orlando, Baltimore and Gainesville. Other station groups with stations that will carry Volume 41 include CBS Television Stations, Belo, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Tribune Broadcasting, Gannett, Cox, Hearst-Argyle, Media General, Meredith, Clear Channel, ACME, ComCorp/White Knight, Weigel, Grant, Pappas and Roberts. The variety of movie titles range from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Batman Begins and Million Dollar Baby to Ocean’s Twelve and Good Night, and Good Luck along with 30 others.

Showtime has ordered up a second season of Californication. The first of season two’s 12 episodes will begin airing this summer.

CMT’s original film Dale, the only authorized film about Dale Earnhardt narrated by Paul Newman, which premiered Tuesday night, became the most watched telecast in the network’s history among A18-49 and total viewers. The film earned a 1.65 A18-49 rating and more than 3.1 million total viewers tuned in.

MTV‘s latest reality show – A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila – is built around the singer who reportedly has the most friends in the history of MySpace (2,009,335 at last count). The 10-episode elimination-format dating show is slated to premiere on October 9.

CBS Corporation has entered into a contract to purchase SignStorey, Inc., a distributor of video programming and advertising content in more than 1,400 grocery stores across the nation such as SuperValu, ShopRite and Price Chopper among others. The deal involves a purchase price of $71.5 million in cash and SignStorey will be renamed CBS Outernet. Pending regulatory review, the transaction should be completed this fourth quarter. SignStory currently targets consumers with specialized content that can be customized by region and daypart through a satellite-delivery system. It’s available in six of the top 10 markets in the U.S. with a traffic count of more than 72 million customers each month. As CBS Outernet, there are plans to expand distribution to more retail outlets.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Dianne Wiest will join the new midseason comedy The Return of Jezebel James on FOX portraying Talia the mother of Sarah (Parker Posey) and Coco (Lauren Ambrose) Tompkins.

Casting Call: NBC is hosting live auditions for its revival of the American Gladiators competition series, produced by MGM Television and Reveille. The first casting will happen this Saturday in Los Angeles, followed by auditions in New York, Chicago, Miami and Dallas throughout this month. Contestants must be 18 years of age and U.S. citizens. At these live casting events, contestants should come wearing workout attire as their physical ability will be tested in the areas of strength, speed, balance and agility. Viewers who cannot attend the live castings should visit nbc.com/casting and click on American Gladiators to apply.
