Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 4, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Launching at MipJunior next month is Mango Distribution, a new kids/family distribution company focused on the Asia, Australia and New Zealand territories.  Mango Distribution is a joint venture between Philippines-based production company Top Draw Animation and Australian kid TV producer, Sticky Pictures, and has set up offices in Manila, NY and Sydney.  Heading up Mango are Top Draw’s Wayne Dearing and Sticky Pictures’ Donna Andrews.  Additionally, Andrews will serve as Mango’s sales agent for New Zealand and Australia, with Kerry Novick coming on to oversee sales throughout Asia.  Mango Distribution MipJunior offerings include:

  • Pearlie (26×24), an animated series based on author Wendy Harmer’s K6-10 aimed books about Pearlie the Park Fairy.  Co-produced by Sticky Pictures and Nelvana, Pearlie has been pre-sold to Network Ten and Nickelodeon in Australia and YTV (Canada).
  • WordWorld (26×24) – the preschool series co-produced by PBS Kids and the US Dept. of Education.  The series has been acquired in Asia by Playhouse Disney channels in the region including Southeast Asia (including the Taiwan feed), Australia, and New Zealand, with Korean pubcaster Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) taking the free TV, IPTV and DVD rights.
  • Invisible Network of Kids, aka I.N.K. (26×24), an action/comedy series about a secret kid network created to protect their school.  Targeted to K6-10, I.N.K. is co-produced by France’s Samka Productions and France 3.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Twilight movie stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will appear on The 2009 Video Music Awards where they will introduce an “exclusive expanded trailer” for Summit Entertainment‘s new movie The Twilight Saga: New Moon, per MTV.  The 2009 Video Music Awards will air September 13 at 9p on MTV.  And in case you have been hiding somewhere The Twilight Saga: New Moon opens November 20, 2009.

Barbie sets out on her newest animated adventure, Barbie and The Three Musketeers, debuting on DVD this September 15 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.  The title also features a host of bonus content including: two music videos for the songs All For One and Unbelievable; bloopers; I Can Be a Songwriter; and Behind the Scenes: Barbie Fashion Show.  Consumers will also be able to buy and download the new Barbie animated feature, as well as pervious Barbie titles, from online stores, including iTunes.  Each DVD includes a Barbie Pink Ticket Party instant win game piece for a K3-12 aimed contest.  More information about the contest, rules and other ways to enter (no purchase necessary) can be found at www.Barbie.com/pinkticketparty .

Lionsgate and Hit Entertainment will release Wallace & Gromit: The Complete Collection, featuring all of the duos short films on Blu-ray and DVD for the first time, on September 22.  The release includes Wallace & Gromit in A Matter of Loaf and Death, A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave.  Of course there is a ton of bonus content too, including audio commentary from creator Nick Park, four featurettes, a demo DVD ROM game, and a Shaun the Sheep Off The Baa bonus episode.  In addition, the packaging on the four-disc DVD set features the duo in 3-D molded forms.  Like the films, Wallace & Gromit: The Complete Collection was created and directed by Nick Park.  Aardman Animation produces Wallace & Gromit.

Supergirl Jam partners with Girls Incorporated for the third year to encourage girls to be their best while doing what they love.  This Sunday, September 6 at 10a at Venice Beach, the final stop of the 2009 Supergirl Jam series, the top female pro athletes in skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing and inline skating will host a group of girls from the LA chapter of Girls Inc.  Coverage of this Sunday’s Supergirl Jam finale will be streamed live on Go211.com and TheWB.com.  Both sites will also feature highlights from the first two stops on the tour the Supergirl Pro Junior and Supergirl Pro-Am Jam.  Additionally, programming featuring events from all three Supergirl Jam events will air this fall on networks including CBS Sports, Fuel TV and Fox Sports Net.  ASA Entertainment, a sports event/TV/content production company, produces the Supergirl Jam in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Scholastic Media and Big Fish Games will launch a series of casual games based on Scholastic’s I Spy franchise.  Beginning this week, Big Fish Games debuts I Spy Fun House, with additional I Spy game titles to follow in January 2010.  The games can be purchased and downloaded ($6.99/game).

Aeria Games and Sanrio Digital are set to launch Hello Kitty Online (HKO) beta for North America during the 2009 Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Washington this weekend.  HKO features the free Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) based on Sanrio’s Hello Kitty.  Developed by Sanrio Digital and published in North America by Aeria Games, HKO invites fans to create a customizable character and play communicate with other online players in the online world featuring other Hello Kitty characters, as well as share videos, blogs and emails and the like.

The newest Webkinz, Opossum, will make his exclusive debut at Cracker Barrel Old Country Store retail stores beginning September 11.  Webkinz teamed with Cracker Barrel stores to create and distribute a new Webkinz pet.  Additionally, Cracker Barrel will continue to offer a range of Webkinz including Guinea Pig, Fox and Raccoon.

STONE SOUP

Middle School/High School Rock Band Call:  The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) invites teen bands to compete it its SchoolJam USA.  Teen musicians 13-18 years old, who are currently enrolled in school in the US and in a band that has never been signed to a record deal, can submit entries online now through October 15, 2009.  On November 1, 2009, 50 semi-finalist bands will be named on the SchoolJam USA site.  Fans can the vote online for their favorite band through December 5, with the top 10 finalists announced in January.  Those top 10 bands will go on to battle it out at the NAMM Show in Anaheim.  The competition is sponsored by NAMM, a not-for-profit association, and promotional partners MENC: the National Association for Music Education, Music For All, the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus and InTune Monthly magazine.
