Cynopsis: DIGITAL

09/04/09

Good morning, it’s Friday, September 4, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Google‘s Android mobile operating system was much hyped as a potential worthy competitor to the iPhone environment, but it has failed to make much of an impact stuck with T-Mobile as an exclusive distributor in the U.S.  Sprint announced plans to sell its first phone running on Google’s Android mobile operating system, giving Google a much larger presence in the American mobile space. The HTC-built Hero handset will feature a 3.2 inch touchscreen, pinch-to-zoom navigation, GPS capabilities, and offer its own custom user interface dubbed “Sense” with access to more than 8,000 apps, widgets and games. Sprint says the phone will retail for $180 after a $100 mail-in rebate, beginning Oct. 11. If the Hero doesn’t catch on, Android will have additional chances with phones from Motorola and Samsung, also planned for release this fall.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Sally Potter’s new fashion-themed feature film Rage starring Judi Dench, Jude Law, Steve Buscemi and others will be the first feature film to debut as an episodic mobile release. Indie content distributor Babelgum will distribute the movie via its free iPhone/iPod Touch app beginning Monday, Sept. 21, releasing a total of 7 installments each day throughout the week. The mobile premiere is part of a multiplatform, international release that includes the US DVD release on Sept. 22nd via Liberation Entertainment; an interactive satellite premiere in the UK on Sept. 24th; the online release via Babelgum.com beginning Sept. 28th and the Adventure Pictures DVD release in the UK and Ireland, also on Sept. 28th.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Art is one of those things that is hard to find buyers for because it’s so personal and subjective. B-to-B art dealing site BoundlessGallery.com has spun off an online social platform for artists worldwide designed to help connect artists and their works with perspective collectors by revealing more about the artists themselves. TheArtistFinder.com allows artists to create their own profiles to showcase their work and link to art they’ve posted on other sites including Boundless, Esty, and Yessy. Artists pay a percentage commission when works are sold through either the BoundlessGallery.com or TheArtistFinder.com sites.

Online music streaming service Pandora is on track to collect $40 million in revenues this year after introducing premium options and increasing its user base to 30 million people, per DowJones’ Venturewire. The service currently has two premium options: users of the free ad-supported version who listen to more than 40 hours/month have to pay 99 cents to keep listening for the rest of the month. Pandora One is a $36/year paid subscription service offering unlimited listening hours, no ads, no daily skip limit and higher audio quality streams.

Online news outlets continue to occasionally break through with muckraking exclusives. GlobalPost says its story about corruption and fraud in Afghanistan has prompted the U.S. Government to investigate a flow of American aid money that is ending up funding the Taliban. Congressman Delahunt is on-the-record saying that he is going to launch a Congressional investigation in the fall, according to the site.

Movie industry news service FilmNewsBriefs is re-launching its website on Sept. 8. Dan Maccarone, who helped lead the strategy and design of Hulu and is a founding partner at Hard Candy Shell, will act as a technology advisor and oversee the re-design and functionality of the site.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Sometimes social media marketing is all about damage control, and the faster you can get a handle on the disaster, the easier the mess is to clean up. Viralheat, a social media monitoring site that analyzes Twitter and over 200 other hangouts, announced a new feature that will automatically alert marketers to any dramatic spikes in brand mentions. If a there is an uptick in Twitter activity for example, the Viralheat homepage will alert users of what is going on. Users can also sign up for hourly email reports to make sure that nothing is missed.

20th Century Fox
‘s Jennifer’s Body, opening Sept. 10th, is launching the first advertising UGC campaign on the iPhone with Tapulous – creator of top iPhone game Tap Tap Revenge (which has been downloaded more than 11 million times). Would be designers have the opportunity to create their own personal themes for the contest, utilizing pictures of babe-of-the-moment Megan Fox to showcase their work. First place will have their theme launched in Tap Tap Revenge II with the new song from Panic!: At the Disco, “New Perspective,” in addition to receiving a Large Intuous tablet.

Finland mobile handset maker Nokia announced it is opening up its maps and navigation application interfaces to third party developers, enabling them to integrate GPS info into apps they build for the Ovi store. Nokia also said Thursday that it will launch the Ovi Software Development Kit in Beta, providing developers with a set of tools to create applications for the internet and for its Symbian and Maemo mobile operating systems.

Reports continue to circulate of iPhone users’ frustrations with AT&T’s 3G network as the telco struggles to keep up with demand for bandwidth from the data-hungry phones. A report this week in the NYTimes tries to analyze whether or not the exclusive contract, which brings AT&T subscribers who pay an average of $1,000/year for service, is worth the damage it is doing to the AT&T brand.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Multitasking among multiplatform content consumers continues to rise, according to Nielsen‘s most recent A2/M2 Three Screen Report, with some 57% of internet users surfing and watching TV simultaneously. While such two-screen usage accounts for only 3% of their overall TV viewing, it represents 28% of their at-home internet time. The average TV viewer who uses the internet simultaneously does so for 2 hours and 40 minutes a month. However, the availability of video on multiple devices and platforms only seems to be feeding the desire to watch more television. Amazingly, TV consumption in the U.S. continues to increase despite the competition from other mediums, with the average viewer watching 141 hours per month, a 1.5% increase from a year ago. Other trends include:

  • Online usage is relatively flat, though more people are viewing video online than ever before. Adults 18-24 watch more than 5 hrs each month vs. Adults 65+ watching just over 1 hr of online video
  • Short form video (such as YouTube clips) still makes up the lion’s share of online video viewing – 83% in May 09 – while name-brand TV network content comprises the majority of mobile video viewing
  • Younger demographics aren’t using the internet as much as older demographics, yet the growth rate of kids 2-11 online clearly outpaces overall internet penetration
  • Mobile video viewing continues its upward trend, with over 15 million Americans reporting watching mobile video in Q2 2009 – an increase of 70% versus last year

The GSMA, the body that represents the worldwide mobile communications industry, announced that it has formally selected comScore to be its measurement partner for the GSMA’s Mobile Media Metrics (MMM) commercial implementation in the UK. The platform is set to launch commercially with five UK operators (Vodafone, Orange, O2, 3 and T-Mobile) beginning in early 2010.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Two navigation apps launched in August for the iPhone:

  • TomTom‘s iPhone app is one of the pricier apps to be had on the iPhone, available for $99. But it’s loaded with cool features – the interface pulls up both driving and walking directions, allows you to access your contacts menu to point you to your friend’s houses, and search for local restaurants then place a one-tap call for reservations. (TomTom is set to release a car cradle for the iPhone that sticks to your windshield, due out soon)
  • AT&T‘s own Navigator app has launched a voice-guided GPS navigation app that is free to download, but AT&T will bill you $10/month each month you use it. It tracks public places, ATMs, Wi-Fi hotspots and gas stations by the price their charging at the pump

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

There is a battle quietly brewing in Silicon Valley over who gets to be the dominant multiplatform control center. Facilitate choices to the end user and collect valuable consumption data that can be used by marketers to profile consumers’ likes and dislikes. TV and entertainment listings iPhone app iTV is going at the market by way of the handset. The start-up unveiled a major upgrade this week, adding an integrated Tivo remote control, iTunes integration, push programming notifications and a brand new interface. The iTV app turns the iPhone into a full-featured control center for all your entertainment needs: check TV and movie times, purchase movie tickets, manage your Netflix queue, watch YouTube videos, and now control your Tivo HD remotely. The interface is elegant, visual and easy to figure out. iTV is releasing the remote control framework to third party developers, hoping to get other set-top manufacturers interested. There’s much speculation that Apple is busy working on a major redesign of the Apple TV module, to turn it into more of a living room entertainment/gaming console that integrates with the iPhone, with full access to the App Store. (In other words, you could utilize the touchscreen iPhone to play games on your TV.) iTV is pointing the way here, and could prove to be influential in this converging world.
