Cynopsis: DIGITAL

09/18/09

Good morning, it’s Friday, September 18, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Do you want a paperback made while you’re waiting for that espresso? Google announced a new partnership that makes its index of over 2 million public domain books available to On Demand BooksThe Espresso Book Machine, a print-on-demand “ATM for books” that can spit out a 300-page paperback in a matter of minutes, at the cost of about a penny a page. The machine is powered by the company’s EspressNet proprietary software system that connects it to a vast encrypted network of licensed content. “What’s great about this technology is that it radically decentralizes the marketplace for the distribution of books,” says Dane Neller, CEO of On Demand Books. Most books would retail for about $8 wherever the machine was located, with each partner keeping $1 per sale. The machine itself costs about $100,000.

Online location-based news distribution service Fwix announced that it received $2.75 million in funding led by BlueRun Ventures. Fwix aggregates news articles and blog posts and distributes stories that are relevant to specific locales in more 80 North American cities. Its secret sauce is a proprietary algorithm that identifies place names, topics and issues a city may be interested in. It’s interesting because it treats all sources of news as equal; blog entries are given equal weight with missives from major news organizations. The more active the local blogging community, the richer the local site. There’s even a Google Trends-like tool that identifies hot topics. Fwix also released a new “Wire” API allowing third parties to integrate geo-targeted Fwix news updates onto outside sites or applications. This could be a great way to help distribute news stories to previously underserved nooks and crannies on the web.
