President Obama’s address, where he laid out his plan for health care reform to a joint session of Congress Wednesday night was viewed by 32.1 million people, based on LiveSD stream per Nielsen. The speech was carried live on 11 networks from 8p to approximately 906p. The networks airing the speech include ABC, CBS, NBC, Univision, Telemundo, BET, CNBC, CNN, FOX News Channel, Galavision and MSNBC. The combined HH rating for all 11 networks equaled 20.6. Note: BET, Univision and Telemundo aired the speech on a tape delay. John Stossel, a fixture on ABC News as a correspondent and co-anchor of newsmagazine 20/20 is making a switch to Fox Business Network and Fox News Channel. Stossel will host a one-hour weekly show on FBN called Stossel where he will explore libertarian topics in the US and in the world. He will also be a regular contributor to Fox News. Stossel has been a part of ABC’s 20/20 since 1981 and was named co-anchor in 2003. Ellen DeGeneres will become American Idol’s fourth judge when the show returns for its ninth season next January on FOX. DeGeneres also signed a new five-year agreement with Warner Bros. to continue hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show which debuted its seventh season this week. The talk show is cleared through the 2010-2011 season with three additional years following. DeGeneres also has previous American Idol experience as she co-hosted the 2007 Idol Gives Back special with Ryan Seacrest. Maura Tierney will bow out of the upcoming NBC drama series Parenthood, citing conflicts with the timing of her breast cancer treatments and the show’s production schedule. NBC has already started recasting her role. The network pushed back the production schedule of the series last July upon learning of Tierney’s condition, reserving Parenthood for a midseason launch. An NBC spokesperson said, “While we are saddened that Maura Tierney won’t be able to continue in her current role in ‘Parenthood,’ our main concern is for her quick and full recovery. Our thoughts and best wishes are with her.” NFL fans who live in a blacked out home team market can view the game on NFL.com in full on a delayed basis, according to an announcement by the NFL yesterday. All games will be available on an on-demand subscription basis during the 2009 regular season and postseason through the league’s new NFL Game Rewind service. If, however, games are blacked out locally for not selling out by 72 hours in advance, the game will be offered via NFL.com at no charge in those affected home markets. Adult Swim premieres the new stop-motion animated comedy Titan Maximum September 27 at 1130p. Titan Maximum is created by Robot Chicken producers/writers/directors Seth Green, Tom Root and Matthew Senreich along with ShadowMachine Films’ Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico. Root, Senreich and Green will executive produce the series. Voice talent includes Green, Breckin Meyer, Rachael Leigh Cook, Dan Milano and Eden Espinosa. Lifetime opens a second season of DietTribe, the reality series where a group of friends train and lose weight together on October 2 at 9p. Pro trainer and health guru Jessie Pavelka and psychotherapist Stacy Kaiser will again mentor and coach the friends, this time a group of new moms over 120 days as they work hard to become fit and healthy. Pie Town Productions produces DietTribe for Lifetime. SyFy debuted a third season of Destination Truth Wednesday night at 10p reaching 1.2 million A18-49, 1.3 million A25-54 and 2.1 million total viewers. Classic film The Wizard of Oz is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and Warner Home Video and Turner Classic Movies will host a new hi-def restoration of the film at approximately 450 movies theaters nationwide on September 23, per Multichannel News. The one-time only event precedes the release of freshly remastered Blu-ray and DVD editions of the film. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Long accused of helping to kill the newspaper business, Google may be trying to make amends by releasing a micropayment e-commerce platform that publications can use to charge for their content. The plan was revealed in a document submitted to Newspaper Association of America, first noticed by Harvard’s Nieman Journalism Lab. An extension of the Google Checkout platform, the micropayment system would help manage subscriptions across multiple news sites and payments from third party syndication. Of course Google would get a cut of the action, sharing revenue from each transaction, perhaps along the lines of the 30% taken by Apple at the App Store or Google itself at the Android mobile app market. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Veteran TV execs Kevin Gillis, Michael McLaughlin and Michael Iscove have launched their new production and distribution family entertainment company, Skywriter Media and Entertainment Group. The company will focus its efforts on developing/producing/distributing content across TV, online, gaming, mobile and social media. Gillis, formerly a partner in Breakthrough Animation, will serve as CEO. McLaughlin, who was EVP/Entertainment (Canada), Omnicom, takes on the position of President, with Iscove acting as COO/CFO. Paula McLaren joins the new company from BBC Worldwide (NY) to head up worldwide distribution, overseeing global sales, marketing and acquisitions. Full edition: CYN KIDS.
