Cynopsis: Kids!

10/06/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 6, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Best Buy, the electronics and music retailer, has unveiled its plans to launch its own Best Buy Digital Music Store on October 15, 2006, which will be supported by RealNetworks’ newly-released and enhanced Rhapsody 4.0 music service, and will offer both a permanent download store and a subscription download service.  Simultaneously with the launch, the retailer will offer the SanDisk Sansa e200 Rhapsody MP3 players.  For those shoppers who purchase one of two different sizes of the MP3 player will also receive a free 2-month subscription to the new service, providing them with unlimited downloads to the MP3 during that period.  Following the initial free months, a monthly subscription will cost ya $14.99.  Alternatively, consumers can purchase songs one at a time at the standard single fee of $.99.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Canada’s Teletoon has inked two new development deals.  As for what the network is in search of in the way of new programming?  While remaining focused on its core K6-12 audience, the network is looking for series and specials that can offer expanded interactive opportunities.  Teletoon is co-owned (50/50) by Astral Media Inc. and Corus Entertainment Inc.
New Development:

  • How Embarrassing – A flash animated series based on real stories of embarrassment as told by kids/teens and adults.  The series comes from Indivisual Productions inc. (Toronto).
  • The Side Show Christmas – The owner of the last circus side-show kidnaps Santa in a last ditch attempt to offer the best attraction ever, and help save the family business from going under.  Looking to save Christmas are a 10-yr-old boy, a clown, a rubber girl and a talking goat.  From Cheshire Smile Animation (Saskatoon).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) has acquired A+, a branded block of anime programming that airs in Central Europe on the kid targeted channel Minimax.  Targeted to teens/young adults 15-25, the A+ anime block initially debuted on Minimax in January 2005, airing daily from 8p-2a, in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia available in more than 4 million HH.   A+ will join SPTI’s global networks group, with the UK-based SPTI group controlling the channel and providing business and editorial direction while Minimax handles the day-to-day operations as a channel management service working with SPTI’s Budapest office.

Beginning this Saturday, October 7, 2006 the animated series Franny’s Feet will be available on PBS Kids with a Spanish-language track or DVS using the Secondary Audio Program (SAP).  The series is about Franny, who helps out at her Grandpa’s shoe repair shop every afternoon, where she tries on shoes. The shoes transport her to different imaginary adventures depending on the type of shoes. Additionally, the series includes an online component at www.pbskids.org .  The PBS Kids version of Franny’s Feet is produced by Decode Entertainment in association with Thirteen/WNET.  The series was an original commissioned by the UK’s Five and Canada’s Family Channel.

Granada International has sold preschool CGI animated series POCOYO to Disney Channel across Scandinavia and The Baltics.  The first full season of the series (52 x 7′) will air on pay and basic cable and satellite TV in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands as well as the Republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from early 2007.  The first series of the series has already been picked up in Scandinavia by YLE (Finland) and 365 (Iceland).  A new season of Pocoyo (another 52 x 7′) is currently in production.  POCOYO is produced by Zinkia Entertainment/Granada International in association with Granada Kids and Cosgrove Hall.  The English-language version of the series is narrated by actor Stephen Fry.

Canada’s Family Channel launches season two of its original live action comedy series Naturally, Sadie (13 X 30′) on Sunday, November 5, at 6:05p , the shows’ regular time slot. Naturally, Sadie is produced by Decode Entertainment in association with Family Channel.
