Good Morning.  It’s Friday, October 5, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

USA has picked up the cable TV rights to New Line’s film Hairspray (2007), and is expected to pay in the $13 million neighborhood for the opportunity, reports Daily Variety.  USA gets the film for four years beginning in 2010, during which time it will also be able to air it on Bravo. HBO which has an output deal with New Line, has the pay TV rights, and New Line Distribution can also carve out a few runs for broadcast.  In the eleven weeks since its premiere, the feature film has pulled in more than $118 million domestically.

Tonight’s Finales:
SCI FI Channel: Dr. Who at 8p

Saturday’s Premieres:

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Bravo’s Top Chef 3: Miami finale drew nearly 2.2 million A18-49 viewers and 3.1 million total viewers. I won’t tell you who won, just in case you haven’t seen it yet.  And there is one more episode of this season scheduled – all 15 contestants will return for the reunion show Top Chef: Watch What Happens Special on October 10 at 10p.

Great American Country (GAC) offers a new twist on the outdoor show as it debuts The Girls Outdoors on Saturday mornings at 630a. With host/creator/producer Jennifer Wysocki, the hi-def show is all about teaching women they can have fun and participate in outdoor sporting activities just like the boys.

BET J, part of the BET Digital Networks, has a slew of new shows opening this month that join Parallel Paths and Tears, Shears and Beauty which have already debuted:

  • Africana – starts this Saturday at 9p, African-themed film series.
  • Conversations – starts October 8 at 830p; BET J head Paxton Baker interviews current popular African-American entertainers.
  • Timeless – debuts October 10 at 930p; program that highlights the lives and careers of various musical artists.
  • Real Life Divas – premieres October 11 at 10p; profiles prominent African-American women such as author Terri McMillan among others.
  • Living the Life of Marley – debuts October 26 at 10p; reality show about Ky-mani Marley, son of reggae music great Bob Marley.
  • The Best Shorts – airs Sundays and Tuesdays at 8p; film competition series that showcases up-and-coming African-American filmmakers.

Menudo is back!  MTV’s Making Menudo reality series will make its debut on October 25 at 1030p, following the fourth season premiere of Run’s House. Out of the hundreds of guys who auditioned, fifteen 13-19-year olds were picked to head off to Menudo Boot Camp in Miami.  The 10-episode series will be re-broadcast on MTV Tr3s on Saturdays at 2p.  Menudo Entertainment will handle the final 5-person urban/Latin music boy band with manager Johnny Wright.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Comedy Central ordered up a new series The Root of All Evil where unlikely persons or pop culture entities, such as Paris Hilton vs. Dick Cheney, are pitted against each other and put on mock trial with comedian Lewis Black presiding. Each episode will have a rotating group of comedians that will argue who or what is the most evil with Lewis making the final decision. The series is set to debut next March.

Joining the cast of ABC‘s Grey’s Anatomy is Lauren Stamile in a recurring role.

Versus will add a new weekly to its lineup – Sports Unfiltered with Dennis Miller, scheduled to debut November 6 at 10p, per Variety.  A. Smith & Co., will produce the weekly hour, and Miller will chatter about the recent goings on in the sports industry, from headlines to some of the bigger issues facing the sports world. The show will be taped at Miller’s home in California, and will be in front of a live audience.  Live Audience … your own home …. hmmm … is that a good thing?

Showtime has ordered up a pilot for the project Possible Side Effects, written by Tim Robbins, who will also direct the pilot.  Set in the pharmaceutical research industry, the show’s central characters are always on the hunt for the next big miracle drug which also has the potential of making them billionaires. The show also takes in all the political aspects of moving a new drug thru the process to bring it to market.

Fox has made a series commitment to a new drama from Bad Robot Prods. and Warner Bros. TV called Fringe.  A sci-fi series, this one is a little X Files and a little Twilight Zone in its dealings with the paranormal and a little bit of humor, says Variety.  In addition to the series, Fox’s new deal with Warner Bros. (a la the ABC deal with Warner Bros. a month ago) includes streaming rights for Season #1, and those rights then switch to Warner Bros. in season #2.

And one more from Variety Lifetime has picked up a reality project called The Premier and I, which focuses on the actress Lisa Raye McCoy-Misick, newly dubbed first lady of the Turks and Caicos Islands and her new husband the Premier Michael Misick.
