Cynopsis: Kids!

10/03/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 3, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The US Senate passed two acts that relate to kids and their viewing and online activity:

  • The Senate unanimously passed the Child Safe Viewing Act yesterday in Washington DC.  The bill requires the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to further investigate new blocking technologies and review existing blocking devices and ratings aimed at helping parents monitor what their kids watch on TV and online via various media platforms.  Additionally the FCC will need to look at the availability and compatibility of these technologies with various platforms and to make sure that the blocking devices/programs don’t impact the packaging and/or pricing of programmers offerings.
  • This week also US Senate also approved the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act.  The measure aims to bring parents, industry and educators together to improve education for kids about the internet while also strengthening parental control.  Once singed into law by the President, the act will require that schools receiving E-Rate funds offer specific education on online behavior (including social networking, chat rooms, cyber-bullying), establish a group to identify technologies to help parents protect kids from content they deem inappropriate for their families, and develop a nationwide public awareness campaign that will be conducted by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Decode Entertainment is developing Betty Banner, Party Planner (52×11) a new 2D animated series aimed at K8-12.  Created by Canadian-based House of Cool, which will also work on the animation for the series, Betty Banner, Party Planner revolves around 12-year-old Betty, who is called upon to plan events for the strangest affairs, with the evil Party Co. always looking for a way to thwart her plans.  Decode Enterprises will handle international distribution for the series, and will be seeking broadcast partners at Mipcom.

Hanna-Barbera‘s Yogi Bear, and Boo Boo too, are set to make a return in a new mixed live-action/animated Yogi Bear feature film, which is in development at Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Set to direct the Yogi Bear movie is Ash Brannon (he was co-director/co-writer Surf’s Up), with a screenplay from the writing team of Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia (the two are writing Fox’s Tooth Fairy).  Donald De Line is producing the picture under his De Line Pictures with Karen Rosenfelt also producing.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The two 2008 US Presidential candidates will answer 10 questions each from K10-15 across the country on the special Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Kids Pick the President, airing October 12 at 9p on Nickelodeon.  Following the special the network will once again invite kids to cast their votes, October 12-20, at www.nick.com/kpp.  The results of the Kids Pick the President vote will be announced on air on Monday, October 20, at 8p.  The episode will also air on Cable in the Classroom (schedule TBA), which airs Wednesday and Friday mornings at 6a.  Additionally, special Kids Pick the President teacher materials can be found at http://www.nickjr.com/teachers/index.jhtml?_template=teachers.

Disney Channel will premiere 10 new episodes of its preschool-targeted short-form healthy foods series Tasty Time with ZeFronk during Playhouse Disney, Saturday, November 8 (from 6:25a).  That morning Playhouse Disney will feature healthy lifestyle themed new episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, My Friends Tigger & Pooh, Imagination Movers and Bunnytown.  Kids/families can find ZeFronk’s featured recipes at www.playhousedisney.com.

Shaftesbury Films signs a new broadcast deal and several renewal pacts for its live-action series Life with Derek.

  • VRT (Belgium) acquires the free TV rights for the first three season of the comedy.
  • Renewing the fourth season of Derek are: Boomerang (UK); Daro (Central & Eastern Europe); Disney Channel (US and Italy, Germany, Latin America, Portugal, India); France 2 (France); Noga (Israel); Selecta-Vision (Spain); and VRAK.TV (French Canada).
  • Taking season three are Disney Channel Japan and France.

Foothill Entertainment will attend Mipcom where it will offer the new TV series My Momtourage & Me (26×25).  The show revolves around Harper, a tween-girl who is making her way through the tween/teen years and live a ‘normal’ life, which is complicated by her pop star Mom’s nutty lifestyle that includes her entourage, many of which have a hand in raising Harper.  My Momtourage & Me is created by Australian illustrator/writer Kyla May (Miss.Behaves, Smirk, G2G: Got to Go etc.).  Foothill is also seeking co-production partners for the series.

Nelvana Enterprises travels to Mipcom where it will showcase new shows/specials and projects in development including:

  • Scardey Squirrel (26×30 and companion shorts) – aimed at K6-11, the series follows the adventures of an obsessive-compulsive hero.  Scaredy Squirrel is based on a book series by Melanie Watt, published Kids Can Press.
  • Being Ian: an IAN-convenient truth (1×60)  The TV movie, based on the Being Ian series, follows Ian on his quest be the greenest of them all and win the nationwide ecology contest.  The movie is produced by Studio B Productions in association with YTV, and distributed by Nelvana.
  • Series currently in development at Nelvana: Skull Heads – a 3D animated series developed with Korean studio Enemes, about tiny, heroic creatures trying to get a grip on their size, shape and superpowers; Sidekick – about a school for superhero sidekicks; The Academy  a live-action teen-targeted show about the antics of a smart/nerdy kid at an Arts Academy.

Actress Shenae Grimes, who plays Annie Wilson in the new version of Beverly Hills 90210 on The CW, is also starring in the new tween/teen/family TV movie The Cross Road (1×48) from Polar Cap Productions.  Set in post 911 US, the movie is a Romeo and Juliet story about a teen girl who falls in love with a Syrian boy and the hatred that ensues, including from her own family.  Polar Cap Productions will debut the movie later this month at Mipcom.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Fitz Roy Media (FRM) teams with UK-based Blonde Pilot to further develop Secret Wings, a popular UK brand of girl 4-7 targeted stationery and back-to-school products created by Blonde Pilot.  FRM and Blonde Pilot plan to develop more entertainment projects, interactive website content as well as a global licensing and merchandising program based on Secret Wings, including an animated series (4×11) set for release on DV in winter 2010 and two Secret Wings chapter books that will release simultaneous to the DVD.  In addition, licensing agents have been appointed for Germany, Greece, the Middle East, Benelux, Korea, China, Taiwan and South East Asia, with others to be named soon.  Four major multi-territory licensees have been signed including: Time Concepts (watches, clocks, room decor, lights); Prosperity Industrial (beads, jewelry cases, craft sets); eNice (3D pen dolls, toy cosmetics, play sets, specialty items); and Sandylion (stickers, pads, pens, stationery items, etc). Products from these companies will be introduced in Europe beginning mid-2009.

Radio Disney is set to launch its new multi-platform daily programming feature, Next Big Thing (N.B.T.), this Saturday, October 4.  Designed to introduce listeners to new unsigned recording artists and asks them to listen and look and then vote on their favorites at RadioDisney.com or by texting NBT to Disney (on web-enabled cell phones).  NBT will feature artists every two weeks over the course of 22 weeks, with the ultimate winner named on March 30, 2009.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Turner Entertainment Networks Asia, Inc. (TENA) promotes Mark Eyers to the new position of VP/Content.  In this role, Eyers will oversee TENA’s content business including scheduling, acquisitions, programming operations, presentation, original production & development and new brands/business efforts.  Most recently, Eyers was Exec. Director/Programming overseeing programming functions (e.g. operations, acquisitions, development) for Cartoon Network, POGO and Boomerang channels in Asia Pacific.
