Cynopsis: Kids!
10/31/08
Good morning. It’s Friday, October 31, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. Boo!
Dolphin Entertainment to receive financing for a slate of six tween and teen-targeted feature films in a new agreement with Continental Entertainment Capital (CEC), an affiliate of Citi. The financing will cover production and prints and advertising costs for the six movies to be produced and sold internationally by Dolphin Entertainment, and released domestically by a studio partner. The first feature film under the new financing pact is Soul Surfer The Bethany Hamilton Story, which is based on the true story of the female successful teen surfer who lost her left arm in a shark attack (five years ago today) and went on to become a pro surfer and an inspirational speaker. Dolphin Entertainment is best known as the producer of Nickelodeon’s series Zoey 101 and Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, as well as the Roxy Hunter movies, Gym Teacher: The Movie and the upcoming TV movie musical, Spectacular!
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
A Disney Channel spokesperson tells us that the network is developing a Disney Channel Original Movie, a TV movie that is not a feature film, based on its live-action comedy series Wizards of Waverly Place. This news follows an interview that Selena Gomez, a star of Wizards of Waverly Place, gave to MTV News, in which she said that a big screen movie based on the series was in the works.
MORE KIDS STUFF
It is kind of like The Naked Brothers Band month on Nickelodeon this November. The network is set to premiere both a new hour-long movie, Operation Mojo, on Saturday, November 22 at 9p, followed by their first animated special, The Supetastic 6, on Wednesday, November 26 at 8:30p, which also staring the band. The movie includes the debut of two new songs by the group. Additionally, Nat and Alex Wolf set out on their first tour, Nat & Alex Wolff: Fully Clothed & On Tour, beginning November 1. Season three of The Naked Brothers Band bowed on Nickelodeon earlier this month.
Sesame Workshop teams with V-me to produce and televise a special aimed at supporting military families with K2-5 deal with the return of a parent who is changed due to a combat related injury. V-me will premiere Changes: Lives of Military Families (Cambios: Vivencias de Familias Militares) November 11, 10-11p. The special is hosted by noted Mexican actress Gaby Rivero and follows the story of the Muppet Rosita and her dad who is injured while away doing his job.
CCI Releasing acquires the international rights to the tween-centric movie Alice Upside Down. Produced by Alice Partnership, organized by Open Pictures and Avondale Entertainment Production, Alice Upside Down stars Alyson Stoner (Camp Rock, Cheaper By The Dozen) and Lucas Grabeel (High School Musical, HSM 2 and HSM 3) and Luke Perry and Penny Marshall among others, the movie is based on Phyllis Reynolds Naylor’s books about Alice (11) who moves to a new town with her dad and teenaged brother. Anchor Bay Entertainment, a division of Starz Media, released Alice Upside Down direct-to-DVD in July 2008. Starz Entertainment handles the US rights to them movie. CCI also recently picked up the family comedy A Plumm Summer, starring Henry Winkler, William Baldwin and Chris Massoglia, and the movie Sticks and Stones.
The BBC’s CBBC launches a new kid-targeted site, Bugbears, on November 10, 2008. The Bugbears site is designed as a community where kids can share their thought and concerns, including serious ones big and small, and discuss and support one another and vent their frustrations. Each kid user communicates by recording their voice that will come out of their own 3D animated creature creation. Issues to be addressed on the site include street crime and bullying, to less serious ones such as bad school lunches and annoying siblings. Submissions will be “pre-moderated,” and every topic on the site will have various contacts and reference material so kids don’t feel alone with their issue(s), and their thoughts and solutions/tips/advice will available to other users in the online library. CBBC is working with the kid UK protection agencies, the CEOP and the NSPCC.
Coming out of Mipcom UK distributor C4i, a unit of the Digital Rights Group, inks a range of deals with Scandinavian broadcasters. Among those is a pact with TV4 Sweden, which acquires the teen/young-adult aimed series The Inbetweeners (6×30′), a Bwark Productions program that follows the misadventures of a group of suburban tweens.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Neopets ( www.neopets.com ), a unit of Nickelodeon, launches a Halloween version of its new, free multiplayer online game, Key Quest, and a limited-edition line of Neopets Halloween-inspired plushes from Jakks Pacific. Now through November 3, players can earn virtual Halloween-themed prizes playing Key Quest (which is available around the world in 11 languages), while the new plush characters will be available at retail, and as usual include their own special codes that unlock virtual goodies online. New Neopets products are set to launch now through 2009, across a range of categories including toys, apparel, books, trading cards etc., as well as the Neopets Puzzle Adventure game for PC and Nintendo DS and Wii.
Decode Interactive releases the Halloween-themed Whack O Lantern, its first game for the Apple iPhone and iTouch. Whack O Lantern is combination of Whack a Mole, the carnival game, with the characters of Strange World by artist/illustrator/urban vinyl toy designer Nathan Jurevicius, creator of Scarygirl. Prior to this Decode and Jurevicius teamed on the animated shorts Dudson (90×15 second).
STONE SOUP
In the event you are in Hollywood and looking to create a little Halloween mischief today … you ought to know that a Silly String ban is in effect as of 12a October 31 through 12 noon tomorrow November 1. Seriously. Those caught with Silly String, that includes using, selling or distributing it, in Hollywood will have it confiscated and are subject to a $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail, this all according to the four-year old Los Angeles Municipal Code 56.02.
