~ MORE GOOD STUFF  ~

As a follow up to yesterday’s lead story, Comcast, despite early denials, is indeed in discussions about establishing a new joint venture company in partnership with General Electric, owner of NBC Universal. Comcast would lead the new entity, owning a 51% stake in NBC Universal with GE holding 49%. Comcast would likely put up $4 to $6 billion with GE supplying $12 billion in debt to the venture. The deal would allow Comcast to unite its own cable assets (E!, Style, Golf Channel and a cluster of regional sports networks) into the new company. This deal also requires Vivendi losing its 20% stake in NBCU which is majority owned by NBCU.

After receiving a cease-and-desist order from Jon Gosselin, TLC has stopped filming the Gosselin children involved in the reality series Jon & Kate Plus 8, reports the AP. TLC further stated production on the series involving the young twins and sextuplets of Kate and Jon Gosselin would be suspended until more talks can happen between the parents, though other filming on the series continues. TLC released a statement in conjunction with this news saying in part, the network is “deeply disappointed at [Jon’s] continued erratic behavior. He and the family were shooting as recently as last Friday, without incident … Despite Jon Gosselin’s repeated self-destructive and unprofessional actions, he remains under an exclusive contract with TLC.” This past Monday, TLC announced the reality series would become Kate Plus Eight and Jon Gosselin’s involvement would be diminished. The cease-and-desist order was issued by Gosselin’s lawyer the same day.

Univision Network debuts a new primetime novela titled Sortilegio (Love Spell) starting next Tuesday at 9p. This love story is about a beautiful innocent country girl Maria Jose (played by Jacqueline Bracamontes) who falls in love and marries Alejandro Lombardo (William Levy). Here’s the twist = in reality she marries Alejandro’s dastardly step-brother Bruno (David Zepeda) who is conniving to murder Alejandro so Maria Jose can inherit his fortune as his widow. Sortilegio is produced by Carla Estrada, creator of other novelas such as Amor Real (True Love) and Pasion (Passion).

HISTORY announces a handful of upcoming new series:

  • Madhouse – 13-episode series, previously announced in development, features the quarter-mile racetrack, Bowman Gray Stadium located in Winston-Salem, NC known to locals as the “Madhouse” and the family rivalries surrounding the history of the track. Madhouse produced by Triage Entertainment for HISTORY, is set to premiere in 1Q 2010.
  • American Pickers (wt) – The network has begun production on this 10-episode series which is meant to be a companion series for Pawn Stars under the new programming genre National Treasures. This new series is about people who hunt for antiques and rare treasures in the small towns and along back roads of America and in particular will follow two expert “pickers” Mike Wolfe, owner of Antique Archaeology and his partner Frank Fritz. American Pickers is produced by Cineflix Productions and is slated to premiere in 2010.
  • Sliced – This series cuts objects in half to reveal how they work and their inner workings details. Each episode will be themed corresponding to the object being examined. Sliced is produced for HISTORY by Powderhouse Productions.
  • Extreme Trucking – Producer Thom Beers of Original Productions (Ice Road Truckers) takes viewers to places around the globe where American drivers try to navigate dangerous roads and learn the history about them.

Independent media communications agency, Carat released updated forecasts for global advertising spending in 2009 and 2010. Since its first prediction from this past March, Carat now expects global ad spending to decrease by -9.8% overall (vs. -5.8% last March). Despite a gloomy overall calculation for this year, Carat is predicting a slight uptick in ad spending for 2010 by +1% worldwide, spurred on by more stable economic conditions in the West and recovery in such developing markets as China. For the US specifically, Carat expects an ad spend reduction for 2009 at -16.3% (vs. -9.8% from the March forecast). For 2010, Carat forecasts the US market as a whole will still be in the negative but by a single digit at -2.6%. Revised predictions by advertising sector worldwide include: Television ad spending is expected to be down this year by -6.3%, though up in 2010 by +2.2%; Newspapers and Magazine are predicted to take the biggest hits this year at -16.7% and -17.1% respectively and both are expected to be down next year at -2.7% and -3.3% respectively; Radio is also down significantly in 2009 at a calculated -12.4% and just a bit below for 2010 at -0.2%; Cinema down this year by -3.2% and up next year to +1.7%; Outdoor in decline this year by -6.7% and expected to rise in 2010 to +2.4%; and Online, being the only positive category, is expected to gain in ad spending this year by +1.0% and jump to +8.3% in 2010.

Retirement Living TV (RLTV) is now available via Comcast in major cities in the West Coast in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

FX ordered two more new original dramas:

  • Terriers – This comedic drama is from creator/executive producer Ted Griffin (Ocean’s Eleven) and executive producer Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and stars Donal Logue as an ex-cop who partners with his best friend to run an unlicensed private eye business. 13 episodes are produced by Fox 21, and will likely premiere next summer.
  • Lights Out – A drama from executive producer/showrunner Warren Leight (In Treatment) and creator/executive producer Justin Zackham (The Bucket List) centers on an ageing former heavyweight boxing champ, played by Holt McCallany who struggles to find his identity and to support his family outside the ring. 13 episodes are produced by Fox Television Studios and FX Productions with a scheduled launch in late 2010.

Evolution Media, producer of Bravo reality show The Real Housewives of Orange County, and filmmaker R.J. Cutler’s Actual Reality Pictures are teaming under the terms of a new agreement. Cutler’s unscripted television projects under his company moniker will merge into Evolution’s slate whereby Evolution will produce all and have an exclusive first-look arrangement with the producer for future unscripted projects. Cutler’s current documentary, The September Issue, about Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her team, has received much critical acclaim and has already earned nearly $2 million after 4 weeks in the US.

James Franco, seen in such hit films as Pineapple Express and Spider-Man, will take a turn on ABC’s daytime soap General Hospital. Franco will guest star as a mystery person who comes to Port Charles starting November 20. The recurring stint will continue for about two months.

Reiko Aylesworth (24) was tagged for a recurring role on FX’s Damages, per EW. Details on Aylesworth’s character have not, as yet, been revealed. Production on season three of Damages began last week and 13 new episodes are scheduled to debut in January.

MSG Network hired Mike Keenan, coach of the 1994 Stanley Cup winning New York Rangers to be a regular guest analyst for pregame, intermission and postgame reports for the network. He joins MSG’s broadcast team of Sam Rosen, Joe Micheletti, Al Trautwig, John Giannone, Dave Maloney and Ron Duguay. Keenan begins his new post this weekend during Opening Night when the Rangers go up against the defending Stanley Cup champs the Pittsburgh Penguins.

USA Network gave a cast-contingent pilot order to a legal drama project titled Facing Kate, per THR. Produced by Universal Cable Productions, the show is about a divorced female lawyer who leaves her job to take on the position as a moderator. Michael Sardo created the project and will executive produce along with Steve Stark and Russ Buchholz.

Bravo has three new projects in development featuring reality stars from some of its other hit shows. Bethenny Frankel of The Real Housewives of New York City; Christian Siriano season four winner of Project Runway; and Fabio Viviani a Top Chef finalist from season five will all receive their own docu-series based on their lives and careers. Magical Elves will produce the series Fabio: A Catered Affair in addition to the yet-to-be-titled Siriano project; Shed Media U.S. which also produces The Real Housewives of New York City will produce the untitled Frankel series.

Casting Call: HGTV’s real estate-themed show, House Hunters International is seeking outgoing and fun homebuyers who want to buy a new home (primary, second or holiday home) in the next six months. The show is also seeking energetic and charismatic agents who sell homes outside the US and are fluent in English. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Comcast‘s stock took a hit on Thursday after the company denied reports that it had inked a deal to acquire 51% of NBC Universal for $35 billion. New details unearthed by CNBC suggests that GE would spin off NBCU into a new company that would be merged with the content-related assets of Comcast including E!, the Golf Channel and its regional sports networks. The pact, originally reported Wednesday evening on industry news site The Wrap, hinges upon Vivendi selling its 20% stake in NBCU. One thing’s for sure – a deal of this magnitude would be tough to pull off during the current financial climate.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Little Airplane Productions (The Wonder Pets, 3rd & Bird) and Hit Entertainment (Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends among many others) ink a new partnership to develop original preschool-targeted programming for the worldwide market.  No specifics about potential preschool projects were outlined in the announcement.
