Cynopsis: Kids!

10/02/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 2, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Little Airplane Productions (The Wonder Pets, 3rd & Bird) and Hit Entertainment (Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends among many others) ink a new partnership to develop original preschool-targeted programming for the worldwide market.  No specifics about potential preschool projects were outlined in the announcement.

Kids like to make up their own games, set the rules and serve as the judge (and jury too – but you know that’s another story).  Understanding that, the ever expanding music-based Kidz Bop is launching the first kid-created online contest application, Super Contest Maker, which lets kids create their own user generated video contests.  What that means is kids get to make up their own contests, set their own rules, oversee the voting and entry process, pick winners and hand out virtual prizes.  This new feature follows Kidz Bop’s recent launch of its first iPhone/iPod touch app, KB Glow.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon Australia and Nickelodeon New Zealand have acquired all three seasons of Riverbank Films new live-action boy-targeted series Shreducation (39×30).  Both channels plan to launch the series this January 2010 to coincide with the Winter Olympic Games.  Shreducation follows a group of real kids 12-16 that are up and coming snowboarders being trained by noted Canadian snowboarder Jesse Fulton.  The series follows the trials and tribulations of these kids as they train and travel the world competing in snowboarding events, with some of the kids hoping to make the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Hawaii Film Partners and Toonzone Studios will feature three animated kid-aimed properties at MipJunior and Mipcom.  You can find them at the Showcase Entertainment booth, which distributes Hawaii Film Partners’ projects internationally.

  • Guardians of the Power Masks (26×30) – the animated series follows a young American girl, Annie, a pop star wannabe that is shipped off to spend the summer with her grandmother and cousin in a rural town in China where something mysterious is about to happen that will threaten the world.  Annie and her cousin become warriors and must fight the forces of evil using the sacred Power Masks while keeping their identities a secret.  The series is produced under a partnership with Hawaii Film Partners, the City of Changzhou in the People’s Republic of China, and the Gagwon Information Multi-Media Corporation (GIMC) in South Korea.
  • Action Dad (26×30) – this animated program follows the trials of a single dad trying to raise his tween/teen kids and still keep up with his job as an action hero.
  • Ape Escape (38×2) – the animated series is based on Sony PlayStation’s Ape Escape game was produced for NickToons, which debuted the series in July 2009.  A co-production with Frederator Studios, Ape Escape was animated at Hawaii Films Partners’ animation studio.

The Jim Henson Company is packing its bag for Mipcom where it will offer its slate of programming new and old including: Pajanimals (11×2, 26×30) – a preschool puppet series,  which is currently in development, about four cuddly pals entertained and calmed with original bedtime-themed songs; the preschool animated series Dinosaur Train (40×30); Sid the Science Kid (40×30) – a preschool-aimed science-based series created for PBS Kids.  Henson will also offer its older programming such as Fraggle Rock (96×30), Emmett Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas (1×60), Mother Goose Stories (39×8), and The Hoobs (250×30) among others.

Knowledge Adventure, parent company of JumpStart, launches MarineLand; its new virtual world aimed at K5-8 and offers five undersea environments.  Marine Land is part of the JumpStart 3D Virtual World, which is also home to StoryLand (K3-5) and AdventureLand (K5-8).  Also in the works is FutureLand, a new world designed for K8-12 and featuring time-travel adventures and activities.  JumpStart.com family subscription is available for $7.99/month.

The Play Label, a division of Electronic Arts, launches two new online girl-targeted destinations:

  • Charm Girls Club is designed to give girls a place to play games, design fashions/accessories, design and collect charms and interact with one another and create their profile page among other things.  The site goes live this week and will be integrated with EA’s four Charm Girls Club video games for Wii and Nintendo DS set for release in the US on October 20, 2009, which will also offer additional access to content online by earning codes during game-play.
  • This week also marks the launch of girl-targeted Littlest Pet Shop Online in the US and Canada, an internet-based game and online community is based on Hasbro’s Littlest Pet Shop toy line.  Littlest Pet Shop Online is free to play but also offers a premium membership ($6.95/month, with deals for three, six or yearly packages).  Hasbro’s line of Littlest Pet Shop pets feature a code for the new site sewn into the toy that offers users a 30-day trial premium membership and special in-game rewards. Littlest Pet Shop Online was developed by Electronic Arts with Frima Studios.
