Comcast‘s stock took a hit on Thursday after the company denied reports that it had inked a deal to acquire 51% of NBC Universal for $35 billion. New details unearthed by CNBC suggests that GE would spin off NBCU into a new company that would be merged with the content-related assets of Comcast including E!, the Golf Channel and its regional sports networks. The pact, originally reported Wednesday evening on industry news site The Wrap, hinges upon Vivendi selling its 20% stake in NBCU. One thing’s for sure – a deal of this magnitude would be tough to pull off during the current financial climate.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The LA Times and The Washington Post dissolved their joint syndicated news service, according to the Wa Post. The service, which had more than 600 clients, was founded in 1962 to provide stories to global news outlets.
 
Hispanic-targeting producer Maya Entertainment reached a distribution deal with In Demand that will bring Maya’s library of Spanish language movies to In Demand cable VOD customers across the U.S.
 
Discovery launched a website providing background on the 4.4 million year old Ardi skeleton, the subject of a special airing Sunday at 9 pm ET. The site includes extensive video features and an interactive 3D rendering of the female skeleton, believed to be the oldest from the hominid branch of the primate family tree.
 
Cond3 Nast’s Brides.com has stuck a partnership with online wedding registry site MyRegistry.com allowing the Brides.com visitors to create and build a centralized wedding gift registry. Items can be added from any store in the world to create a single, unified gift list.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Live webacting service Ustream introduced a new partner program that enables amateur broadcasters to share revenue from contextual Google-powered ads placed within their stream. Google will also provide analytics and manage payments from advertisers; ad options include on-demand mid-rolls, which can be placed between programming breaks at conferences, for instance.
 
StyleSpot.com is a new celebrity news and fashion hybrid that profiles upcoming fashion trends by focusing on what stars are wearing on red carpets or around town. The site was developed by Alex Amin and Rafi Gordon, who also launched professional film industry database site FilmTracker.
 
Independent news site NewsMax launched a health vertical Newsmax Health featuring original news stories, advice from experts and articles from health sources across the web.
 
White label online video management and solutions provider VMIX has secured $2 million in additional financing from existing backers Enterprise Partners, Mission Ventures, JK&B Capital and ATA Ventures, bringing its total venture funding to $23.5 million.
 
Interactive marketing company Kyp announced that it has completed a U.S. $9.1 million series D financing. The company’s iKyp platform is used by major brands to enhance performance across a variety of metrics including response rate, conversion rate and customer spend.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Targeted TV ad solution Visible World and dynamic display ad company Tumri are partnering to deliver advanced advertising solutions for online video. Advertisers using the Tumri AdPod platform will have the ability to dynamically customize and target video ads using the Visible World interface. The integrated solution will provide differentiation based on time, geography, demographic and attitudinal segments, and context to drive and measure audience response.
 
The effectiveness of display ads may be in question, but it can’t be determined on the basis of click-throughs alone, according to the latest “Natural Born Clickers” report from ComScore, conducted with Starcom USA and Tacoda. New findings reveal that the number of users who click on display ads have dropped by 50% from 32% of all users to just 16%, as of March 2009 – meaning that 84% of all internet users never click on an ad. The upshot, according to ComScore, is that advertisers should consider evaluating campaigns based on their view-through impact. Client studies demonstrate that online display ads generate significant lift in brand site visitation, trademark search and sales among users who were exposed to the online ad campaigns – whether they clicked on the ad or not.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Comcast’s sports network Versus is locked in a carriage dispute with DirecTV that may prevent the satellite service’s customers from enjoying the opening of Hockey Season, per the NYTimes. DirecTV pulled Versus from its line up on Aug. 31 after the company balked at higher fees -Comcast was asking for a 20% increase in total dollars, according to the report.
 
Apple
has acquired online mapping company Placebase – the company that produced the “Pushpin” Maps API Apple uses on the iPhone, per Computerworld. The acquisition raises questions about whether or not Apple will continue to use Google’s mapping software on the device.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The potential of web-enabled television may finally be realized through the integration of widgets – mini-applications from providers such as Yahoo that are now used regularly by consumers for a variety of entertainment, productivity and information functions on computers and mobile devices, according to a new report from Ernst & Young. In the short term, widgets will be more of a promotional and branding play. But in the longer term, advertising and pay-for-play capabilities could make this is a significant revenue generator for content and network providers alike.

In the first sign that the novelty factor may have worn off, Microsoft’s Bing search engine saw its first month of declining market share in September, falling from a 9.64% share to record just 8.51% of all U.S. searches, according to web analytics firm StatCounter. Google was the main beneficiary, breaking an 80% market share for the month.

If you think your mobile service drops a lot of calls now, just wait a few years. Traffic volumes on 3G networks are expected to increase 20-fold by 2014 and many operators will not be able to cope with the uptick, according to new findings from Unwired Insight. Of course, voice is not the problem. By 2014, data services will account for 99.4% of all service usage, with video streaming and downloads contributing the largest proportions of total data usage, up to 56.4% in 2014.

Elgato Systems
just launched a $5 iPhone companion app for its EyeTV system that allows users to watch live TV and recordings by interfacing with the EyeTV 3.2 desktop software suite, per Itvt. EyeTV is Elgato’s latest TV tuner/DVR interface for the Mac, enabling live viewing and scheduled recording on your Macintosh computer.
 
The latest versions of the free audio streaming app Stitcher are now out for the iPhone and BlackBerry. The new version features a selection of Premium Shows, allows users to set an alarm-clock to remind them of live broadcasts, and utilizes the iPhone’s GPS capabilities to identify shows that originate in your local area.

Microsoft and Yahoo aren’t alone in upping their game in search. Google has rolled several new search options of its own in an effort to improve timeliness, increase personalization and help cut down on spam. The new search options, added to a few initial options introduced in May, allow users to filter for results Google found in the past hour or another specific date range. Filter by medium such as books, blogs, videos, forums, reviews and news. The system also adds the ability to emphasize or weed out shopping-related results. Users can also choose to see only results they have seen before – giving them a quick way to find a page they have visited before. Meanwhile the company began testing Google Wave this week, an open source, next-generation real time communications tool that combines email, instant messaging, blogging, wikis and social networking. Wave participants can send text, photos, videos and maps across the web in real time, ask others to add content, then hit playback to see how the finished product has evolved and changed. Google introduced Wave months before it is ready launch to try and entice developers to build tools around it. If the popularity of the simple 140-character limited Twitter is any indication, the Google Wave platform could be a serious game changer by adding rich media to the real-time interaction equation.
