Cynopsis: Kids!
10/26/07
Good morning. It’s Friday, October 26, 2007, and this is your first early morning. No edition tomorrow …
Parthenon Kids has picked up the exclusive rights to Rescue Rookies (52×5) preschool animated series from the UK production company Bada Bling. Under the deal, Parthenon Kids holds the rights to further develop the property and the rights in all media worldwide. The series follows the adventures of a group of young emergency vehicles, each with its own personality, which work together to help others. Created/written/designed by Bada Bling’s Curtis Jobling (creator of Bob the Builder, and the new BBC animated series, Frankenstein’s Cat), Rescue Rookies was developed with Qurios Entertainment. Parthenon Kids is the kid’s production/distribution unit of Parthenon Entertainment.
CCI Entertainment and Scholastic Media have inked a distribution deal for the new 3D animated comedy/action series Racer Dogs. According to the deal, CCI will handle the worldwide rights for the property, outside the US, while Scholastic Media is responsible for all US rights. Targeted to K4-8, Racer Dogs is based on the book of the same name by illustrator Bob Kolar, about a group of car racing dogs in Racertown. Broadcast deals are in the works.
Telescreen B.V., Holland-based licensing/distributor of kid’s animation, has teamed with holding company WMG Beheer B.V., also Dutch, to develop and produce new kid’s animated properties. The first two projects under the new partnership are Western Macaroni, currently in development the series is an anime-style western fairy tale, and Frog & Friends (26×7), which is based on Max Velthuijs’ book of the same name, which are slated to bow in fall 2008. Telescreen is currently entertaining offers for TV rights, merchandising, home video and publishing for Frog & Friends.
MORE KIDS STUFF
The Weather Channel launches a site this morning geared to kids and featuring educational content focusing on science, ecology, and climate. Sporting the tag line Bringing Learning to Life, which dovetails with the network’s mission Bringing Weather to Life, Weatherchannelkids.com, officially kicks off at 9a this morning, and will showcase activities, video clips, polls, and games and, of course, forecasts so kids can pick the right clothing for the day. Or as my kids like to think of it, maybe there will be a huge snowstorm and school will be cancelled. The site also includes an ask the meteorologist section, downloadable in-class lesson plans for teachers and a Homework Helper area. Additionally, last week The Weather Channel announced its Forecast Earth Summit, a three day summit to be held December 7-9, 2007 in Washington DC. Forecast Earth Summit is designed to focus on environmental education, and will provide 20 high school kids to meet with environmental leaders, scientists and advocates. Student participants will be selected via a essay contest, which runs now through November 11 ( www.forecastearthsummit.org).
The new residents of Northern Ireland’s version of Sesame Street have been introduced. The two Muppets of Sesame Tree are Potto, a furry, gentle, bookish, and brilliant inventor character, and Hilda, a younger and energetic Irish hare. Local Sesame Tree production company Sixteen South, part of the Inferno Group, and Executive Producer Colin Williams are producing the show in association with Sesame Workshop. With rehearsals already underway in Belfast, the series is slated to bow in spring 2008 on BBC Northern Ireland. Other Sesame Tree characters include the Bookworms, the bright bird Claribelle, and the three Weatherberries.
Starz Edge is set to launch Animidnight, a new Tuesday night/Wednesday morning programming block featuring anime programming, on Tuesday, November 6, 2007, from midnight. Beginning November 6, the block will include Ghost in the Shell: Stan Alone Complex: Solid State Society. November 13, the network will run Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie. Other programming will join later in November.
mun2 joins in NBC Universal’s Green Is Universal week with Viva Green, a week of eco-friendly programming, interactive digital aspects, and a new news special, Toxic City: This is Where I Live. Also taking place November 4-10, the network will bring in eco elements to its One Nation Under Hip-Hop, The mun2 Shift, 18 and Over, and VIVO shows. As the fourth installment in mun2’s news specials, Toxic City: This is Where I Live, which profiles Latino youth in highly polluted communities who are mobilizing to address environmental justice. The documentary and other content and info will also be available on holamun2.com .
MARKETING/LICENSING
Whoopi Goldberg and Scholastic Book Clubs today announced the launch of the Whoopi! We’re Reading! Sweepstakes. Here’s the scoop, the effort challenges teachers, in classrooms participating in Scholastic Book Clubs’ ClassroomsCare program, in classes nationwide to get their students to read 100 books. One hundred winning classes will be chosen, and each of those will win ten 100-book collections, which they will then donate to the local charities of their choice. Whoopi has penned two kid’s books so far, Alice (1992) and then Whoopi’s Big Book of Manners (2006), the latter is the first title in a three-book deal with Hyperion Books.
