Cynopsis: Kids!

10/24/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 24, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Coolabi acquires UK indie licensing agency Licensing By Design, which gives Coolabi licensing and merchandising rights to properties including the kid-aimed Bagpuss, The Clangers and Ivor the Engine.  We can look forward to merchandising programs for all three series, which were created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, which all continue to air.  Fran Huxley, Managing Director, Licensing By Design will serve as a consultant on a part-time basis for Coolabi.  Thomson Financial reports Coolabi purchased Licensing By Design in a deal worth about US $660,000.

SpongeBob SquarePants returns to China via China Central Television (CCTV) from January 2009.  The Nickelodeon series made its initial debut on CCTV in 2006, and again in fall 2007.  This time around China will get 30 new SpongeBob episodes, previously unseen there.  Additionally, Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products inks a three-year licensing pact for SpongeBob with Guangzhou Art-land Human Being Culture Communication, which already holds the home video license there.  The multi-category deal includes SpongeBob toys, apparel and stationery among other categories.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The new Domo (26×2) stop-motion animated short-form series on Nicktoons Network this month.  The viral shorts are airing run of schedule daily, with a new Domo short bowing each week.  Big Tent Entertainment handles the marketing and licensing for the property.  Nickelodeon debuted the short-form series earlier this year on several of its international channels in Europe, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand.

Disney Interactive Media Group‘s Disney Online launches Pixie Hollow, an online virtual world where users can create their own Fairy and interact with other Disney and user created fairies.  The site also invites folks to play games, make crafts, and collect items in nature, and earn special badges.  While Pixie Hollow is free to play, those who wish can also upgrade to a paid membership (monthly/$5.95).  Disney Pictures releases Tinker Bell on DVD and Blu-Ray on October 28.

Chello Zone‘s Extreme Sports Channel, a 24/7 UK TV channel featuring skate, surf, snow and bike programming, launches a new version of its website at www.extreme.com.  The newly offers access to new films and events from popular names in the business (e.g. Red Bull, Animal, Vans and extremepie.com), as well as improvements in tools that allow users to more easily upload videos and photos of their extreme adventures to share in a community platform, and of course full programming information.  The site will also showcase user contests and sweepstakes.  While not specifically aimed at kids/tweens/teens  we all know that these sports are all popular, both as activities and as spectators, with these demos.  A unit of Chellomedia, Chello Zone is also behind the preschool-targeted JimJam channel, which is a co-venture with HIT Entertainment.
