~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Bravo announced it renewed Top Chef Masters for a second season, the series where well-known chefs battle each other in weekly challenges. The final winning chef gains the title of “Top Chef Master” and a prize for the charity of their choice. Kelly Choi, food journalist, will continue to host the series and those back at the Critic’s Table include restaurant critic Gael Greene, culinary expert James Oseland and food critic Jay Rayner along with Top Chef series judge Gail Simmons joining this new season. During season one, Top Chef Masters averaged 2.22 million total viewers and 1.53 million A18-49. Magical Elves produces the series for Bravo.

FOX decided to take its sophomore series Dollhouse off the schedule during November sweeps, cites EW. The series, created by Joss Whedon will be back in December with back-to-back episodes airing on Friday nights.

Discovery Channel Canada premieres the 10-part BBC Worldwide series Life with double episodes starting November 15 at 8p. A hi-def version of the series will also air on Discovery HD. Life, the series, was filmed over 3,000 days, touching every continent and is narrated by David Attenborough. The series previously launched in the UK and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray from the BBC in spring 2010 to coincide with Earth Day. Life is a co-production of BBC/Discovery/Skai/Open University in association with RTI Spa.

To satisfy the “Gleeks,” aka fans of new frosh series Glee, FOX said it will release the first 13 episodes of its music-filled drama on DVD at the end of this year, per Variety. ‘Glee’ Season One: Road to Sectionals will be available in stores by December 29. The 13-episode set will also contain a director’s cut of the pilot episode as well as behind-the-scenes features, cast audition clips and music performances from the show. Later in mid-2010 the full first season of Glee will be released on DVD, picking up the new original episodes slated to air on FOX next spring. The 13-episode set, coming out this December will also include a voucher toward the purchase of the full season box set.

Actress Collin Wilcox, 74, best known for her role as Mayella Ewell in the 1962 film adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, died on October 14 at home in Highlands, NC. Wilcox (also billed over the years as Collin Wilcox-Horne and Collin Wilcox-Paxton) was also a prolific actress on television, guest starring in numerous classic shows such as The Untouchables, The Defenders, The Twilight Zone and Gunsmoke. She also appeared in other Hollywood films and in plays on Broadway.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

Media Rights Capital (MRC) is producing a television series for the US based on the British political thriller miniseries and the novel of the same name, House of Cards. The one-hour adaptation will be executive produced by Academy Award-nominated director David Fincher; Josh Donen, Eric Roth, Andrew Davies and Michael Dobbs, the novel’s author, will also executive produce. The novel and original miniseries follows an ambitious British politician who eyes the position of Prime Minister and will do anything to gain his goal. The new drama, set in the US, will also involve political intrigue, networking and blackmail.

FOX’s sci-fi series Fringe is gaining a new villain as Sebastian Roche joins the series as a regular playing a soldier from another universe who is part human/part machine. Roche replaces Thomas Kretschmann who was originally cast and was seen in the October 8 episode, but couldn’t continue in the role due to a scheduling conflict.

Lisa Kudrow is the latest Friends alum to become involved in a new TV show project. Kudrow along with Dan Bucatinsky are developing a comedy for Showtime based on the memoir by actor/writer Craig Chester titled Why the Long Face?: The Adventures of a Truly Independent Actor, reports Variety. The TV adaptation is tentatively titled Rapture and tells the story of Chester’s upbringing as a gay son living in a devout Christian household told from the perspective of 9-year old Chester. Kudrow and Bucatinsky will executive produce through their Is or Isn’t Entertainment production company; Chester, Paul Miller and Kimber Rickabaugh will also executive produce. Don Roos will direct the project if picked up to pilot.

Adult Swim approved a pilot order for a live-action comedy called Eagleheart, produced by Conan O’Brien’s company Conaco and Dakota Films, per Variety. The project, a TV show within a TV show, focuses on a demanding has-been action star who gets a new TV show project (Eagleheart) and tangles with the low-level TV executive who is the producer. Michael Koman and Andrew Weinberg are the writers and executive producers along with Conaco’s David Kissinger and Dakota Films’ Troy Miller.

Prior to its launch on October 30, new premium channel Epix said it will add original scripted programming to its lineup in the near future, reports THR. The joint venture of Viacom, Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate, is aiming for its first original scripted fare, likely a miniseries, to debut in third quarter 2010. Epix also has the miniseries Atlas Shrugged in development and the likely drama series Tough Trade in the pipeline. The premium network has plans to premiere a new scripted project each quarter, alternating between miniseries and 13-episode series.

USA Network tagged Sarah Shahi to headline the pilot Facing Kate, thus lifting the contingency off the project. Produced by Universal Cable Productions, the pilot is about Kate (Shahi), a divorced San Francisco lawyer who switches careers to become a mediator. TV viewers will recognize Shahi as she most recently played the female lead on NBC’s cop drama Life, opposite Damian Lewis.

Jamie Denbo landed a regular role as the lawyer on the upcoming FX comedy/drama series Terriers, starring Donal Logue, per THR. Additionally, FX cast Joelle Carter in a regular role on the new drama Lawman starring Timothy Olyphant as US Marshal Givens. Carter will play a former lover of Givens. Both Denbo and Carter guest starred in the pilots of their respective series.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Like Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses of reform to the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski introduced his proposed rules to impose net neutrality principles and “reasonable network management practices” on the broadband industry. (For the record, there are 186 items in the FCC document.) The rules included restrictions against throttling traffic, suggestions for reducing the effect of network congestion, guaranteeing customers a certain quality of service, and preventing illegal uses of the network, including unauthorized transmission of copyrighted works. There was also more attention paid to wireless internet networks, soliciting cautious agreement from industry officials such as Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam and Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Rather than strictly codified rules, the document was presented as more of a guideline, to be hashed out among the stakeholders. The deadline for comments on the proposal is January 14, 2010; reply comments are due by March 5, 2010.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  ABC TV Australia will launch its new kid-targeted digital and online channel, ABC3, on Friday, December 4, 2009.  ABC3 will offer a range of programming and genres for different age groups, preschoolers in the early part of the day and older gets as the day goes along, including two hosted weekday blocks, Studio 3 in the morning and RollerCoaster in the afternoons, and from 6p on specifically featuring animated series, comedies, and drama and music series, per Asia Media Journal.  Weekends will feature highlights from the week and a range of other programming.  Leading up to Australia’s shift from analog to digital TV, some of the ABC3 content will also be show on ABC1 from 6-8a and 4-6p weekdays, and on Sundays 8-9a.  Programming will also be available at ABC3 website www.abc.net.au/abc3 . In addition to programming, the website will feature a range of content and games, activities, blogs, and customizable tools.  Looking to better serve preschoolers, ABC TV is also growing its preschool programming on ABC2 beginning December 4, when ABC for Kids on 2 will air weekdays from 9a-6p and weekends from 6a-6p.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.
