Good morning. It’s Friday, October 23, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
ABC TV Australia will launch its new kid-targeted digital and online channel, ABC3, on Friday, December 4, 2009. ABC3 will offer a range of programming and genres for different age groups, preschoolers in the early part of the day and older gets as the day goes along, including two hosted weekday blocks, Studio 3 in the morning and RollerCoaster in the afternoons, and from 6p on specifically featuring animated series, comedies, and drama and music series, per Asia Media Journal. Weekends will feature highlights from the week and a range of other programming. Leading up to Australia’s shift from analog to digital TV, some of the ABC3 content will also be show on ABC1 from 6-8a and 4-6p weekdays, and on Sundays 8-9a. Programming will also be available at ABC3 website www.abc.net.au/abc3 . In addition to programming, the website will feature a range of content and games, activities, blogs, and customizable tools. Looking to better serve preschoolers, ABC TV is also growing its preschool programming on ABC2 beginning December 4, when ABC for Kids on 2 will air weekdays from 9a-6p and weekends from 6a-6p. ABC3 will feature six young on-air hosts selected through a nationwide search and a variety of programming:
- Amberley Lobo (18) and Kayne Tremills (22) will host of Studio 3, a home base of sorts for the channel, which will feature games, competitions, special guests and the like; Ben Crawley (22) will serve as a roving reporter for Studio 3;
- Scott Tweedie (21) will host the action series, Prank Patrol;
- Hannah Wang (20) will co-host the action sports show Rush TV, with Chris Boadle (a competitive snowboarder), which follows the newest and best in snowboarding, BMX, skating, surfing and motocross;
- Stephanie ‘Hex’ Bendixsen (24) will co-host Good Game SP, which features the latest gaming news, views and reviews, this show is the kid-targeted version of ABC2’s series Good Game. Regular Good Game host, Steve ‘Bajo’ O’Donnell, will also be featured on the series.
- Some of the other programming for ABC3 includes the world premiere of the drama My Place, which is based on a book; CJ the DJ, an interactive animated show about a music-loving teen; Dance Academy, a drama that follows a group of students at the National Academy of Dance; Dead Gorgeous, another drama about three ghostly sisters; the popular series Heartbreak High; the science series Richard Hammond’s Blast Lab; and the documentary series Be the Creatures.

The third season of the preschool series Handy Manny will premiere on Saturday, November 7 at 8:30a on Disney Channel. The new season also includes 31 new episodes of Handy Manny, as well as a primetime special, a short-form series, and ten new tool characters. The three-minute shorts, Handy Manny School for Tools, are slated to debut beginning in mid-2010. Guest stars this season include Rosario Dawson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jim Belushi and Giada De Laurentis, as well as the return of Lance Bass in his roles as Elliot the klutzy surfer.
PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go! celebrate Halloween with holiday-themed episodes of their respective series from October 30 (check local listings). Throughout the month Halloween-themed episodes and various related activities will be featured on www.PBSKidsGo.org/video , www.PBSKidsGo.org and www.PBSKids.org/Halloween . Additionally, parents/caregivers can find a free costume pattern for Buddy, the T-Rex from Dinosaur Train, at www.PBSParents.org. This month PBSParent.org is also launching a new crafting column, Craft Apparent.
Toei Animation Europe inks a deal with Orange in France to launch its animated series Captain Harlock and Ken, the Great Bear Fist on VOD and mobile VOD. The VOD is available on PC and IPTV via the 2424video service. The short-form mobisodes (3-5minutes) are versions from the TV series and free to subscribers on the Orange World portal.

Spain-based Zinkia launches Pocoyo World, a new Spanish and English-language virtual community for kids, parents/caregivers. Targeted to K3-8, the site allows users to create their own characters, interact with others and watch episodes of Pocoyo among other activities. Pocoyo World features basic access to the site for free and exclusive access for subscribers. European master toy licensee Bandai, home entertainment company Big Picture, and publisher Planeta and Planeta Agostini have teamed with Zinkia in Spain, to offer free access to Pocoyo World, with the purchase of specific products. Other language versions of Pocoyo World are set to rollout in the coming months. Additionally, Pocoyo World is backed by Spanish internet security operator Protegeles. Zinkia co-produces the Pocoyo TV series with ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
Radio Disney gets the holiday season underway in Chicago with a concert featuring Mitchel Musso (Hannah Montana) on Saturday, November 21 as part of the 18th annual Magnificent Mile Lights Festival ( www.themagnificentmile.com), presented by Harris, at the Harris Stage in Pioneer Court at 1:30p. Following the concert Musso, Radio Disney on-air talent Jake Whetter and local hosts PK and Adam will appear on the Radio Disney float in the parade. Additionally, Radio Disney is currently hosting an enter and win Disney Prep & Landing contest, which supports ABC’s first half-hour TV special, Disney Prep & Landing, produced by Disney Animation Studios and debuting December 1, 8:30p
