Good morning. It’s Friday, October 13, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from Cannes, France at MIPCOM.

CBS has ordered a full season of Jericho, the drama about a small Kansas town suffering the aftermath of a nuclear bomb starring Skeet Ulrich and Gerald McRaney among others. On Wednesday nights at 8-9p, the freshman series has averaged 11.3 million viewers and a 3.4/10 in A18-49 and 4.6/12 in A25-54.

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has two new original series in the works:

  • Idols (wt). TCM has ordered the pilot for this new series where today’s movie stars sit down with the “idols” that inspired and influenced them in the business. The pilot episode features Alec Baldwin talking with Gene Wilder. Executive Producer is Robert Trachtenberg.
  • Private Screenings, premieres March 2007. This series of conversations with network host Robert Osborne and Hollywood’s A-list stars continues with Jane Fonda who discusses her body of work.

 
VERSUS will debut the “sizzling” new competitive show Barbeque Championship Series on October 22 at 10p. Filmed at the Best of the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off at Nugget Casino Resort in Reno from August 30-September 4, the show features six top BBQ chefs, six challengers and six amateurs all hoping to win the $75,000 cash grand prize. Hosted by Pat Parnell and Tava Smiley, viewers will watch the eighteen cooks battle it out in opening rounds over six episodes and then six will remain for the semifinals rounds. Before the Grand Champion can be awarded the prize, however, they must be approved by the judges including former NBA player Darryl Dawkins, actress Megyn Price and celebrity chef/restaurateur Michel Richard. The series is a co-creation of Chris Lilly and John Markus.
 
Hogan Knows Best will return on VH1 for a third season beginning October 22 at 9p. Previews of select scenes from the new season will be available at the network’s broadband channel VSPOT four days before each telecast airs, and an exclusive VPOT original show, Hogans Revealed, will be online each Sunday night at 9p and will be archived on VSPOT. The show is a VH1 production in association with Pink Sneakers Productions.
 
The History Channel’s Engineering an Empire: Egypt two-hour premiere on October 9 brought in nearly 1.5 million total viewers, making it the network’s most-watched series launch.

MIPCOM 2006 – Cannes, France

Taking many of your tips of places to go while in Cannes, I bailed on the Market today and instead headed for another market entirely – the stores of Cannes.

  • Yes, I went to the Monoprix and shopped my little heart out.  I also traveled the rue de Meynadier, a little pedestrian-only street about 12 feet wide where my apartment was this week, and picked up a couple of nice gifts there, all pretty inexpensively. 
  • Lest you think all I did was shop, I did manage to walk up the little street of Old Cannes toward the castle and I have to say, this was the best spent 17 minutes of the entire trip.  Okay, so it was between meals so no restaurant stops, but just about postcard perfect.  My instamatic camera and I had a very nice time.

And thank you all for the many other suggestions you’ve made – the one store where the woman seems to magically only pulls clothes out that fit you as if custom made, the Macy’s-type department store that could swallow you up for an entire day, the charming little restaurant hidden quietly behind a wine store, and many partial-day trips to destinations outside the city limits.  All of these will have to wait until spring, when we meet here again for MIP-TV.  Same bat time, same bat station, just a different season.  As you read this, I’m somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean.  Honey, I’m on my way home, and I have presents!  See you all back in Cannes this April!

Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis:  ABC took the reins Wednesday night winning with a 4.8/13 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS came in second at 4.5/12, and then NBC 2.9/8, FOX 2.6/7, CW 2.1/6, UNIV 1.6/4 and TELE 0.5/1. ABC dominated the 8p hour with the Dancing with the Stars Results Show at 4.6/13; CBS was next with Jericho at 3.2/9, and tied for third place at 2.7/8 was CW’s America’s Next Top Model and the average of NBC’s newest series premieres 30 Rock and 20 Good Years. ABC won again at 9p with Lost delivering a 6.7/17, and CBS’ CSI: NY came out on top at 10p with 5.9/16.
