Cynopsis: Kids!

11/09/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 9, 2007, and this is your first early morning.

Chorion Ltd. has acquired The Copyrights Group Ltd, an indie licensing company.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.  The deal results in the meshing of two libraries of classic brands with Chorion holding rights to literary-based kid’s brands including Mr. Men, Noddy and Famous Five, with Copyrights Group’s kid brands such as Paddington Bear, Beatrix Potter, Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman, Spot, and Horrible Histories among others.  Chorion plans to focus efforts on expanding Copyrights’ brands in international territories, specifically looking to North America and Japan.

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids celebrates Kwanza with A Savanna Kwanzaa, a special episode of National Geographic Kids Entertainment’s preschool series Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies, from December 1, 2007 (check local listings).  The newly launched series, Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies, which stars Vanessa Williams as the voice of Mama, features a mix of animation and live-action wildlife content from the National Geographic and BBC archives.  Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies airs regularly on PBS Kids weekends.

TV fans accept certain facts without question like the folks on CSI don’t seem to know where the light switches are at a crime scene, and there are a fine group of Hanna-Barbera characters that regularly don ties, hats, cuffs, and the occasional vest … but never slacks.  To honor the no-pants tradition, Boomerang goes commando with a 24-hour marathon of its No Undies Mondays, on Monday, November 12, from 6a.  Cartoon fans can expect to see some of the most popular pant-less characters including Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Augie Doggie and Quick Draw McGraw, Grape Ape and, a personal favorite, Squiddly Diddly.

The alternative rock/punk band Plain White T’s (they sing Hey There Delilah) will make a special guest appearance on Nickelodeon’s TEENick series iCarly.  Plain White T’s will perform their newest single Our Time Now on an episode of iCarly on Saturday, December 1 at 8p.  Plain White T’s are Hollywood Records recording artists.

BBC Worldwide heads to Asia Television Forum, which will be held in Singapore November 28-30, with a full slate of content including kid’s programming as well as natural history, lifestyle, and factual shows.  Offerings in the kid arena include:  In The Night Garden, from Ragdoll; and two new animation series Animalia, based on the popular books by Graeme Base, and Freefonix, an adventure series following three musical renegades.

As first announced this spring 2007, Viacom and India’s Network18’s Global Broadcast News unit have launched their joint venture in India.  Viacom 18 Media Private Ltd includes TV, movie, digital media content, and consumer products.  It will operate the local Nickelodeon, MTV, and VH1 India.  The first effort of the new joint venture is a Hindi-language general entertainment channel slated to bow in early 2008 with original, local programming and MTV Networks acquisitions and content.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Juno Baby, a US producer of educational DVDs, CDs, apparel and plush, has inked a new distribution pact with Brazil’s OmNi E+ to expand into the region.  OmNi E+ is headed by its founder, Marcio Domingues, who has been in the kid arena for 10+ years, including as GM of The Itsy Bitsy Entertainment company in South America and oversaw the launch of Teletubbies there.

STONE SOUP

Twelve animated movies have been submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (A.M.P.A.S.) for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 80th Academy Awards.  With 12 animated movies currently qualifying for consideration, under A.M.P.A.S. rules for the category there can only be a total of 3 films ultimately nominated.  In order for five movies to be nominated in the category, per the rules, had 16 animated movies qualified for consideration, there could potentially have been five nominees in the category.  The 80the Academy Awards nominations will be announced Tuesday, January 22, 2008, as always at the crack of dawn.  The Awards will be handed out Sunday, February 24, 2008 on ABC, live from the Kodak Theatre.  The 12 submitted features are:

  • Alvin and the Chipmunks*
  • Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
  • Bee Movie
  • Beowulf*
  • Meet the Robinsons
  • Persepolis*
  • Ratatouille
  • Shrek the Third
  • The Simpsons Movie
  • Surf’s Up
  • Tekkonkinkreet
  • TMNT

*This is one of three submitted features that has not yet had the requisite LA qualifying run

Additionally, given the altered rules for qualifying animated features, it’s unclear whether the performance-captured Beowulf (with animation and vfx from Sony Pictures Imageworks) and Alvin and the Chipmunks will qualify.  You may recall last year the Academy ultimately decided that Arthur and the Invisibles did not qualify according to these rules.

It’s that time of year again — or that time every few years again — when Cynopsis conducts a quick 5-question survey to find out what you think about and use this daily, how you’d like to see it improved.  Honestly, this will take less than 30 seconds, it’s completely anonymous, and we’d really appreciate your input.  Click here to participate and thank you!
