Cynopsis

11/16/07

Good Morning.  It’s Friday, November 16, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Hosts of the latenight talkers could be coming back early next month, as behind-the-scenes talks are happening with reps from shows Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Late Night With Conan O’Brien, according to Variety.  No word on an official return date has been posted, though December 3 and December 10 were mentioned as possible resume production dates. Who will write the host monologue, or if there will even be a monologue – remains a question.  These clandestine talks (okay, not so clandestine any more) also suggested that since no one wants to be the first show to come back during the strike, two or more shows from different networks may return on the same date. There is precedent for the late night shows to continue even during a work stoppage – Johnny Carson returned to his late night job before the last strike ended. No doubt the late nighters are hoping the WGA will see this move as a Carson, and not an Ellen.

While all of this gets hammered out, non-WGA workers on the latenight shows are still being paid … for now. Earlier, NBC said it would pay its latenight staff only through November 16 but producers lobbied to keep people on the payroll and the network agreed for at least two more weeks. Letterman’s Worldwide Pants production company will pay staffs on his show and Late, Late Show With Craig Ferguson at least through the end of the year. Likewise, Comedy Central continues to pay its latenight support staffs.
