Cynopsis: Kids!

11/14/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 14, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Despicable Me, the new family-targeted 3D CGI animated feature film Universal Pictures, will feature an all star voice-over cast including Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Russell Brand and Julie Andrews, among others.  Despicable Me is the first film from animation producer Chris Meledandri (Ice Age, Robots, Horton Hears a Who!) under his Illumination Entertainment banner under a multi-picture animation and live-action deal with Universal.  The movie is slated for release in 2010.

MORE KIDS STUFF

A Miser Brothers’ Christmas, a new original stop-motion animated holiday special, will premiere Saturday, December 13, 8-9p, on ABC Family, as part of the network’s 25 Days of Christmas programming event.  Based on the characters from the Rankin-Bass holiday classic, The Year Without a Santa Clause, the new special features the return of Mickey Rooney as the voice of Santa Claus and George S. Irving as Heat Miser.  A Miser Brothers’ Christmas was produced by Warner Bros. Animation in association with Cuppa Coffee Studios and is presented by Warner Bros. Animation and ABC Family.

Playhouse Disney welcomes the winter holidays this December with Snow Day Saturdays, beginning Saturday, December 6 (6a-12p) on Disney Channel.  Throughout the month each Saturday during the Playhouse Disney block will feature holiday and winter themed episodes of it series, including new episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Imagination Movers, Little Einsteins and the TV premiere of My Friends Tigger & Pooh Super Sleuth Christmas Movie.

Decode Enterprises and Neptuno Films have signed further broadcast deals for the preschool series Poppetstown (26×30 or 52×11).  The 2D animated series has been acquired by TVO and Knowledge in Canada and Disney channel Latin America.  Poppetstown is a Neptuno (Spain) and Decode Entertainment (Canada) co-production in association with OLC/Rights Entertainment (Japan).  Neptuno has distribution rights for Spain, Portugal and Latin America, while OLC has the rights for Japan.  Decode Enterprises handles sales to the rest of the world.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Big Tent Entertainment inks new licensing pacts for Discovery Kids.  Under the multi-year agreements:

  • Kidz Toys, the licensee for all Kawasaki musical instruments, will create Discovery Kids branded walkie-talkies (in various shapes and models with bonus features), which will be available at retail in the US and Canada in fall 2009.
  • Kids Station, which specializes in musical instruments and youth electronics, expands its deal to offer an array of new branded electronics including DVD players, electronic journals, text messengers and digital photo frames. The product line is also slated to be available in the US and Canada in fall 2009.  This expanded deal is in addition to Kids Station’s Discovery Kids branded camcorders and musical items.

The Muppets Studio‘s The Muppet Whatnot Workshop opens at FAO Schwarz in NYC this week.  The Muppet Studio describes Whatnots as pretty much whatever you want them to be, they are the extras of the Muppet world, the background creatures, monsters and other assorted characters that help create the mayhem in all of its Muppet productions.  Fans can also create their own Whatnot design online and order it at FAO.com.

This week marks the launch of America Eagle Outfitters‘ new kid-targeted brand, 77kids by American Eagle.  The launch includes a special online performance by Jonas Brothers, which takes place today in LA, but will stream just once at this Sun www.77kids.com on November 16 at 3p.  Fans can also log on and select a character to walk the red carpet during the event, join the Jonas Brothers on a video tour of the venue, as well as select from various cameras including a Nick Cam, Joe Cam and Kevin Cam.  Finally, two Jonas Brothers’ songs from the event will be available for extended play through November 30 on 77kids.com.

Toei Animation Co. Ltd. has appointed French licensing company TF1 Enterprises through its TF1 Licenses as the merchandising broker for the Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT.  Under the deal, TF1 Licenses will handle the following territories for the Dragon Ball series: France, French speaking Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Monaco in French language.  TF1 will have all merchandising rights for the brand with the exception of toy, video game, publishing and Lamincards categories.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) has entered into an exclusive partnership with The Colibri Group to develop and produce a line of American Idol-branded men’s and women’s wristwatches, jewelry, accessories and clocks.  Centered around the American Idol logo and other graphic elements from the TV series, the product lines will be developed and marketed in karat gold, sterling silver and base metals across several categories, and are set to hit the market in January 2009 in conjunction with the premiere of the show’s 8th season.
