~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

CNN quickly moved to replace Lou Dobbs following his sudden departure announcement as anchor of Lou Dobbs Tonight on Wednesday night. CNN said yesterday chief national correspondent John King will host a new weeknight political show starting next year in the 7p time slot. King presently helms CNN’s Sunday morning show, State of the Union and was highly visible during the network’s America Votes 2008 coverage of the presidential campaign. King’s new one-hour program will focus on in-depth analysis and discussion relating to current political news and movements in Washington. Jonathan Klein, president of CNN/US released this statement regarding King’s new show: “The program will reflect what CNN is all about: straight facts from our anchors and the widest range of opinions from across the political spectrum. John has enthralled CNN viewers with his vast political knowledge, and he has spent the past year reporting from beyond the Beltway on pressing policy issues and the real people they impact,” said Klein. “Every night, he’ll share his passion and his insights about what is really going on in Washington and across America.”

Spike TV is zooming forward with a new custom car series titled Unique Autosports: Miami premiering February 28 at 1030a. The series, with eight half-hour episodes will be part of the network’s weekend PowerBlock programming lineup. Unique Autosports focuses on the Miami-based custom car and design business that boasts a star-studded celebrity clientele and car enthusiasts. Production on the series will happen in Miami and such celebrities as NBA star LeBron “King” James, musician Sean “Diddy” Combs, NY Yankees baseball players to NASCAR driver/owner Tony Stewart among others will make appearances during the season.

Next month Syfy has a new comedy series, Outer Space Astronauts launching December 8 at 930p following the season finale of reality series Scare Tactics at 9p. Outer Space Astronauts is created and executive produced by Russell Barrett which was completely developed, executed and edited from his home. Barrett’s friends and childhood buddies also star in the series set in the future about eight mildly courageous though distracted military personnel who travel to all parts of the galaxy, looking for knowledge, adventure and whatever else they can find. Outer Space Astronauts will air each Tuesday night at 9p. Scott Puckett and David O. Russell also executive produce with Barrett.

Cable network Current TV, founded by former Vice President Al Gore, this week laid off 80 full-time staffers in an effort to reorganize its programming model. Current TV, originally created to present short-form, user-generated content, will now program more half-hour and one-hour programs, many of them acquired shows. Current’s staffing cuts were mostly based at the network’s Los Angeles production and programming facilities, though some personnel were affected at Current’s New York, San Francisco and London offices. Current will still continue to produce some in-house content and the network in a released statement emphasized these lay offs were not the result of a needed cost reduction, but because the network wishes to reallocate its resources toward licensing and acquisitions.

Syfy’s series premiere of Ghost Hunters Academy on Wednesday at 10p drew in 1.2 million A18-49; 1.3 A25-54; and 2.0 million total viewers. These audience deliveries were the highest for the network for a reality series premiere since the January 2008 debut of sister series Ghost Hunters International.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

NFL Network launched yesterday on BendBroadband, serving subscribers in Central Oregon. The network will be part of BendBroadband’s Preferred package in both standard and hi-def versions. Additionally, NFL RedZone will be carried on the HD Plus tier and subscribers will have access to NFL On Demand.

ESPN will be allowed to broadcast the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games in 2010 and the London 2012 Olympic Games in South America. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave ESPN the broadcast rights to televise both Olympic Games to Spanish-speaking viewers in this region.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

Author Ray Bradbury made a deal with White Oak Films to develop a miniseries inspired by six of his short stories. The Bradbury Chronicles will be presented over six hours though no network has picked up the miniseries as of yet. Bradbury will executive produce and assist in choosing the material and adapting the stories for the project. White Oak’s John Dayton will also executive produce while Merrill Capps, Todd Klick, Cory Travalena and Dale Olson all from White Oak, will produce.

Julia Barr will reprise her role as Brooke English on ABC’s daytime soap All My Children next January, coinciding with the show’s 40th anniversary, cites SoapCentral.com. Barr won two Emmy Awards during the 30 years she was with the show, though has been off the soap for the last two years. Her return will explain what her character has been up to for fans. Also, making special appearances for the soap’s 40th birthday are show alums Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos.

ABC Family cast Scott Cohen and Stephanie Childers in the yet-to-be-titled comedy pilot from Michael Jacobs. The project is about a recently laid-off architect (Cohen) who becomes more of a mentor to his wallflower middle daughter while his veterinarian wife (Childers) becomes closer to their Type-A eldest daughter. ABC Family also tapped Troian Bellisario and Ian Harding for the drama pilot Pretty Little Liars based on Alloy Entertainment’s novel series about teenagers Aria (Lucy Hale), Emily, Spencer (Bellisario) and Hanna who start receiving mysterious messages from their girlfriend who disappeared three years before.

FOX tagged Martha Plimpton for its comedy pilot Keep Hope Alive as well as newcomer Lucas Neff and Olesya Rulin (High School Musical), cites THR. The single-camera comedy is about Jimmy (Neff) a 25-year old guy raising a baby with the help of his eccentric family after the mother of the baby ends up on death row. Plimpton plays Jimmy’s mother who is not interested in raising another baby after having him at age 16; Rulin plays a smart waitress who Jimmy thinks will be the perfect woman to help him raise his daughter. The project is from Greg Garcia (My Name Is Earl) and is produced by 20th Century Fox Television.
