CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

11/11/05

Good morning.  It’s Friday, November 11, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Hardly a vote of confidence – Fox has pulled two of its series from the schedule for the remainder of the November sweep:  Arrested Development (from 20th/Imagine/Hurwitz Company) and Kitchen Confidential (20th/New Line/Darren Star Prods). Look to the Monday 8-9p time period for a repeat airing of Prison Break.  Kitchen Confidential is one of the new shows that has yet to receive a full season order from the network (the others on Fox not yet picked up are Reunion and Killer Instincts, tho additional scripts ordered for both). Additionally, Arrested Development’s episode order has been cut from 22 down to 13, a network move which sounds like the final nail.  Both shows are expected to return in December.

Some good news for Freddie (Warner Bros. TV) at ABC – the network has picked up the back nine, bringing it to a full season of 22 episodes.

This will be the last season of The WB’s 7th Heaven (from Spelling TV), it’s tenth season and the longest running family drama in television history.  So far this season, the Monday night 8p staple has averaged 5.1 million viewers per show, and has consistently been one of (if not the) highest rated show on the network for all of its ten years.  The show’s spring finale should not come as a big surprise – as the cast/crew were signed for the 10th season, it was recognized and acknowledged then this could be its last.

Week #1 of the November 2005 Sweep, according to Nielsen Media Research:
A18-49 :  ABC 4.5/12 (+10 in rtg vs. same time frame Nov 2004), CBS 4.4/12 (-6%), NBC 3.3/9 (-20%), Fox 3.0/8 (+3%), WB 1.5/4 (-6%), UPN 1.5/4 (NC)
Total Viewers: CBS 14.07 million (-5%), ABC 11.97m (+12%), NBC 9.79m (-11%), Fox 6.88m (+6%), UPN 3.60m (-2%), WB 3.56m (8%)

* MORE GOOD STUFF *Spike TV has a new show debuting on December 3rd at 4p called The Playbook, a series of 6 episodes with host Donald Faison, described as the “ultimate guide for guys.”  Faison helps guys learn more about getting the best deals in buying a new or used car, being more successful in their gambling pursuits and how to get the most out of dating, all delivered with humor, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Here’s a good one for you – HBO has been filming a new “docu-comedy based on reality” called House Arrest.  The focus of the show is a fella (couldn’t say if he’s a good fella or not) named Christopher Columbo and reportedly part of the Columbo crime family.  According to Reuters, Columbo is currently out on bail – tho under house arrest – after being charged with racketeering and extortion. Columbo at one point petitioned the court for a little more freedom outside his house, so he could spend more time with his family.  Apparently, his family is hanging out at some pretty peculiar places.  While filming the HBO show, Columbo reportedly visited a strip joint, a therapist, a nightclub, a restaurant, went to confession (sure, that’ll help), all before running home in time for his evening curfew and a friendly game of poker with his pals.  The prosecutor in the case has written a letter to a federal judge, asking Columbo be restricted from filming any more TV shows, and stricter bail conditions.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (the Emmy people), is reportedly on the brink of announcing it plans to create a new award category that will recognize original video content “airing” on computers, iPods, cellphone and other mobile devices. According to The New York Times, the category will first be used at the next Sports Emmys awardfest, and will ultimately make it into awards for news, business and financial as well as the daytime Emmy.  Not expected anytime soon is for this category to be included in the primetime Emmys (which is overseen by the ATAS, sister org to NATAS).

This is pretty cool, and worth sharing with the rest of the TV community. Last week Evansville, Indiana lost 23 people in the devastating tornado, and more than 800 homes were destroyed, with more than 200 injured. Wednesday night, broadcasters in the Evansville market came together – WFIE, WTVW, WAZE and five local radio station raised $1.25 million in a single two hour event [all turned over to the Red Cross and Salvation Army of Evansville].  As one local Evansville broadcaster said, “In lieu of the attacks against broadcasters of late by lawmakers who have said our spectrum space could be better used by emergency responders for hurricanes and other natural disasters, this should prove that we have done just that–provided a pathway for those who need it the most–like no other media can.”  No matter what kind of disaster strikes a market, it seems always to be true that you can depend on the local broadcasters to step in and really make some significant strides. Well done mates, well done.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Food Network has ordered 13 episodes of a new spring series called Food Jammers from Peace Point Entertainment Group. Described as not your ordinary “stand and stir” cooking show, but more of a cross between American Chopper and The Naked Chef.  How’s that for a tease!

HBO has ordered a script based on the 1988 film Dead Ringers. The project is from Morgan Creek Prods, with David Cronenberg on board to direct and Wesley Strick to write, per Variety.  Remember the movie?  It starred Jeremy Irons as identical twins, both gynecologists, and both interested in the same woman – who didn’t realize she was dealing with twins.

Bravo has cast Katie Lee Joel as the host of the network’s new reality competition Top Chef, produced by Magical Elves.  The series features 12 chef wannabes, all competing for a shot a culinary stardom.  The show is scheduled to premiere in 2006.

NBC has placed an script order for a comedy project from NBC Universal TV and Carson Daly Prods., called Tall and Small.  The project is about two 20-something buddies and their adventures in a small town, says Hollywood Reporter.

Clarification :  Yesterday’s item about the USA Network project called Underfunded listed the writer of the pilot as David Breckman, and went on to say he writes for Monk on USA.  True, he does write for Monk, has been on the writing staff there for four seasons.  His brother Andy Breckman is the creator and head writer of Monk.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Tribune Company has named John Reardon as President/CEO of its broadcast group, overseeing the company’s 26 television stations, Superstation WGN, WGN Radio, and Tribune Entertainment.  The company also upped John Vitanovec to EVP; both are effective immediately, so feel free to call them up and congratulate them. John and John had been Group VPs since March 2004, and both have been with Tribune for more than 20 years.

Fremantle Media North America has appointed Steve Tao to SVP/Scripted Programming.  He will be responsible for continuing to develop Fremantle Media North America’s dramatic programming slate.

WCBS-TV flagship station promoted Alan S. Clack to VP/Sales. He has worked in the CBS/Viacom family in various positions for twenty years, most recently as Director of Sales for the O&O’s flagship station.

Scripps Networks has named Kathleen Finch as SVP/GM of DIY Network. Kathleen has been upped from her current position as SVP/Primetime Programming at the Food Network.  At DIY, she becomes part of a new unit headed by Bob Baskerville that is focused on growing Scripps’ digital networks, DIY and FINE LIVING.

Friday Fun Fact:
For a majority of Americans, Thanksgiving Day must include the following elements to be perfect: eating roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie until you’re ready to pop; and watching football games and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV (or see it live if you’re in New York City). Launched in 1926, retailer Macy’s annual parade was immortalized in the film Miracle on 34th Street, and has become a symbol of the official beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1918-At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War finally ends.  Known as “the war to end all wars,” World War I proved instead to be just the beginning of the violent 20th century.  At the time of the Armistice, the Great War had become a bloody stalemate that had cost the lives of 9 million soldiers, with 21 million more wounded.  They were joined by 5 million civilian dead.  After years of inconclusive attrition, the intervention of United States troops swayed the balance in favor of France and Britain, and Germany surrendered.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  I will give you the synopsis, you give me this classic film’s title: Old time western, newly married sheriff, man released from prison coming to town on the afternoon train.  HIGH NOON   Kudos to:  Christian Turek-HBO/NY; Mark Altabe-Citibank/NY; Patrick-Mediaedge/NY; Becca Boswell-CBS Network Sales/NY; Stan Marinoff-Murray State Univ/Murray KY; Larry Chase-Chase Media Marketing/Boise; Christine Grubbs-Warner Bros.
