Cynopsis: Kids!
05/02/08
Good morning. It’s Friday, May 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.
This weekend Cartoon Network introduces Jib & Crash, two new on-air puppet characters that will host intestinal promotional spots showcasing upcoming feature films through on-set celebrity interviews, exclusive sneak peeks and a promise of humorous antics to get their story. The mix-matched duo gets their debut this Sunday, May 4, as they introduce a 90-second sneak at Warner Bros.‘ movie Speed Racer, which opens next week. On top of that, the network will drive tune-in for Jib & Crash through 45-second on-air spots featuring the characters. Later this month Jib & Crash will highlight DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda throughout the week of May 26 with an interview with Jack Black, who lends his voice to the lead character; the movie opens June 6.
Disney Publishing launches its new Disney En Familia, a parent-targeted Spanish-language quarterly magazine, with its premiere issue in July 2008. The controlled-circulation magazine will initially reach 350,000 Latino families that are Disney consumers and have K4-12. IPR, a company that specializes in Spanish language custom publications, will handle outside ad sales for Disney En Familia. The second issue is slated to publish for the holiday season in November 2008.
Correction: The 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards is a presentation of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) in cooperation with the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS).
MARKETING/LICENSING
Scholastic is set to launch a kid’s book publishing program based on the Planet Earth TV series under a deal with BBC Worldwide (BBCWW). Scholastic holds the US and Canadian English and French publishing rights for Planet Earth kid’s book titles (all printed on 30% recycled paper), which it will publish and distribute via its Trade, School Book Club and school Fair programs. Joester Loria Group, BBCWW’s North American licensing agent for Planet Earth, brokered the deal.
Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, signs a deal for the worldwide publishing rights, including audio, for the new picture book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. Slated for release in September 2008, the book is written by author Sean Covey and illustrated by Stacy Curtis. Covey, a VP at FranklinCovey and son of author/entrepreneur Stephen Covey, also wrote The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, and The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make: A Guide for Teens. The book’s release coincides with the launch of FranklinCovey’s elementary school program, The Leader in Me: Developing leaders One Child at a Time Through Great Schools.
D3Publisher of America, Inc (D3PA), a video game publisher/developer, will publish Ben 10: Alien Force The Game, a game based on Cartoon Network’s new series Ben 10: Alien Force, in North America this fall 2008. The new game will be released for Wii, PlayStation 2, and PSP, all under development by Monkey Bar Games, and for Nintendo DS, which is being developed by Playable Productions LLC. The ESRB currently lists the game as Rating Pending (RP).
Chorion expands an online retail relationship and launches a promotional pact:
- Chorion builds on its existing relationship with Ty’s Toy Box, an online retailer, to create a featured unique shopping area for several of its kid properties, including Mr. Men & Little Miss, Noddy and the World of Eric Carle. The first two are active shopping sites now, while the Carle site set to go live later this summer, including a back-to-school campaign.
- Chorion inks a deal with Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar Restaurants for a Kids Menu promotion featuring The World of Eric Carle in an 8-page activity booklet, which will run June 30 through Labor Day. Five million activity booklets will be distributed to upwards of 1800 Applebee’s restaurants nationwide.
The Walt Disney Company has officially acquired its Disney Store chain in North America from The Children’s Place Retail Stores, Inc.’s subsidiaries Hoop Retail Stores, LLC (US) and Hoop Canada, Inc. (Canada). Under the deal Disney takes back control of about 220 Disney Stores in the US and Canada, the actual number is subject to negotiations with landlords. Additionally, also obtains the right to close about 98 Disney Stores in the US and two in Canada, without assuming the leases for these stores. The terms of the agreement were not released. Back in fall 2004 Disney inked a long-term deal giving The Children’s Place ownership of its Disney Store chain.
