Dropping the other shoe yesterday, Time Warner confirmed it will formally end its association with AOL after nearly ten years. Time Warner’s board approved management to go forward with the “complete legal and structural separation of AOL from Time Warner.” Following this procedure, AOL will become once again an independent and publicly traded company. Time Warner also recently divested its cable unit, Time Warner Cable which is now a separate company. Time Warner’s key businesses now include Warner Bros. studio, cable networks such as HBO, CNN, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies as well as publisher Time Inc. Vancouver-based Lionsgate sold its 49% ownership stake in the TV Guide Network and complimentary online business, TVGuide.com to One Equity Partners and media investor Allen Shapiro for $123 million in cash. Lionsgate purchased both properties from Macrovision Solutions in 2008 for $255 million, after Macrovision decided to take Lionsgate’s all-cash offer over the bid from One Equity Partners and Shapiro. Lionsgate confirmed One Equity Partners could still buy another 1% stake in the TV properties. The purchase agreement also has Shapiro joining as Chairman, supported by Lionsgate management, to help grow the TV Guide Network which currently reaches approximately 83 million homes. CBS slated the 11th edition premiere of Big Brother for July 9 at 8p. The debut episode attracted 424,000 W18-49, 539,000 A18-49 and 763,000 total viewers. PBS is launching its first ever national lifestyle reality series called Hannah, Help Me! featuring author/TV personality/lifestyle expert, Hannah Keeley. As a working mother of seven children, Hannah visits desperate and stressed-out moms offering new energy, focus and helpful tips through a two-day life skills crash course. The deal involves Terminator Salvation for TNT as well as other titles including Watchmen, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Gran Torino and three future releases: The Hangover, The Informant and Sherlock Holmes. Each movie will air on the cable networks about 30 months after their US theatrical releases, putting Terminator Salvation’s launch at the end of 2011. Gospel Music Channel (GMC) bought the television rights to the off-net series Amy Grant’s Three Wishes and Clash of The Choirs, pairing them together this summer on Wednesday’s starting June 3 at 8p and 9p respectively. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: As expected, Microsoft unveiled its latest answer to Google’s dominant search engine at the All Things D conference yesterday. The company describes “Bing,” scheduled to launch online next week, as an “organized search experience.” (Why the name? It’s short, easy to say and was relatively cheap to clear, according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.) It features new tools such as Best Match, Deep Links for further research, Quick Preview to query relevance and Instant Answers, providing targeted info within the body of the search page results. On the same day Google conducted its first public demo of Google Wave, an ambitious multiyear project designed to integrate e-mail, instant messaging, photo sharing and social networking. Developers will begin working to develop new apps around the open source platform this summer. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Five feature films every two years!
