Good morning. It’s Friday, May 29, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Five feature films every two years! That is new DreamWorks Animation plan moving forward, which adds an additional movie every other year to the previous two pictures a year release schedule. Additionally, DreamWorks unveiled its slate of animated feature film releases through 2012, which includes give original titles and three sequels. As previously announced, all DreamWorks movies are being produced in 3D.
- 2010: How to Train Your Dragon (March 26); Shrek Forever After (May 21); Oobermind (f/k/a Master Mind, November 5)
- 2011: Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom (June 3); The Guardians (working title, release TBD)
- 2012: Puss In Boots (working title, March 30); a third Madagascar movie (title TBA, May 25); The Croods (working title, November 2)
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
BKN International is launching a new animated project, Joshua Blake: The Agency, which it will present, including animation and scripts, this fall at Mipcom Jr. BKN plans to deliver 40 episodes by spring 2011. With a budget of approximately $13 million, BKN has already secured about $5 million in a deal with a Canadian company. The project will qualify as Canadian Content. Joshua Blake: The Agency revolves around Joshua Blake, a teen following in the footsteps of his older and well-known brother, has been trained by the government spy organization, known as The Agency. Unlike his brother, Joshua will use the powers of The Agency to save the world from the forces of evil. The series will be executive produced by Richard Ungar (Spiderman – The Animated Series, Biker Mice from Mars and X Men Evolution), with Andy Briggs as lead writer (Hero.com and Rise of the Gargoyles).
Paramount and Sony will release Steven Spielberg‘s 3D motion-capture feature film The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn in the US on December 23, 2011, per THR. The movie, which releases domestically through Paramount, will bow internationally from late October through Sony Releasing International across Europe, Latin America and India, with Paramount handling distribution in Asia, Australia, the UK and other English-speaking territories. The movie is the first of a series of feature films based on author Herge’s Tintin (aka Georges Remi).
MORE KIDS STUFF
MySpace will host the online debut of the first movie trailer for Summit Entertainment‘s The Twilight Saga: New Moon on MySpace Movies this Sunday, May 31 at 10:45p. In addition to watching the New Moon trailer, fans can also share the video with pals. Fans will recall that on Sunday, May 31, the Twilight Saga stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, will present an exclusive scene from The Twilight Saga: New Moon, on the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, which airs live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California beginning 9p.
Aardman Animations‘ new Wallace and Gromit short film, A Matter of Loaf and Death, will make its exclusive US premiere on AT&T U-verse TV on June 5-7. Beginning June 1, Wallace and Gromit clips of will also appear on AT&T wireless devices through CV-Video (VOD) and on http://uconnect.att.com , a site for U-verse TV customers that features the latest U-verse TV programming and TV events. In addition to A Matter of Loaf and Death, Wallace and Gromit content will be available on three screens from AT&T:
- A Matter of Loaf and Death short film – available June 5-7 for free in the U-verse TV On Demand library, available for $4/rental beginning June 8.
- Wallace and Gromit shorts, A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave – available in the Wallace and Gromit Fun Pack (includes all three short films plus A Matter of Loaf and Death) for $7 in the U-verse TV On Demand library beginning June 8

Decode Enterprises signs further deals for the preschool series Animal Mechanicals, following CBC (Canada) commissioning of a third season of the preschool series from sister company Halifax Film. With the addition of season three (15×11) there will be a total of 55×11 episodes of Animal Mechanicals. Decode has inked a home entertainment deal with Phase 4 Films for English and French-speaking Canada with launch set for fall this year, and TG4 (Ireland) acquires the first two seasons of Animal Mechanicals.
KidsCo will air in Greece next month under a new broadcast agreement between KidsCo and the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE S.A.). KidsCo is set to debut in Greece via OTE’s IPTV service, conn-x TV on June 1, 2009. KidsCo Greece will be fully localized and the channel as well as the corresponding website KidsCo.
MediaSet (Italy) acquires the free TV and home entertainment rights for to Amberwood Entertainment‘s new CG animated series RollBots (26×30).
The Jonas Brothers will be stars of an interactive video game as Disney Interactive Studios heads into development on Jonas for Nintendo DS. In the game players to take on the role of three Jonas brothers in adventures from their new Disney Channel comedy series Jonas, helping them to juggle their everyday lives including concerts, school, friends and fans. In addition to various interactive elements, the game features songs from the TV series, which fans can perform after each level is completed. The game also includes other cast members and regular locations from the series, as well as the ability to chat with other gamers and unlock items in the game via Disney’s DGamer. Developed by Altron, Jonas will be available this fall for Nintendo DS.
THQ Inc. plans to release Marvel Super Hero Squad, a video game based on the animated series, The Super Hero Squad Show, which debuts this fall on Cartoon Network. Marvel Super Hero Squad will mark the first title in THQ’s licensing agreement with Marvel Entertainment, and is currently in development for Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2 and PSP.

American Greetings Properties expands Care Bears with license new deals leading into Licensing Show next week. AGP inks a partnership renewal with Segal Licensing for Canada to continue developing a range of products multiple categories (apparel, accessories, footwear, home furnishings and bedding). In the US new domestic licenses include Brewster Wallpaper Corp. (fabric, infant bedding, room decor), Imperial Toys (bubbles, water toys), Jakks Pacific (kites, accessories), LF USA (girls fleece, loungewear, tees, tops and underwear), and Kellytoy (sporting goods). In fall 2010, Hasbro plans to launch a new Care Bears toy line, which will be part of Hasbro’s Playskool brand, and will feature the new look of the Care Bears.
Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox Licensing) in conjunction with Bagdasarian Productions are building a merchandising push for Alvin and The Chipmunks. In preparation for the holiday release of Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (December 25, 2009), the follow-up to the 2007 movie, Fox Licensing has signed several new partners. In addition to a toy partner deal with Jakks Pacific (plush, figures, dolls, play sets and novelty toys) and a publishing pact with HarperCollins (storybooks based on the movie), Fox Licensing inks new licenses with JS Karaoke (karaoke products including one that lets fans “Alvanize” their voice) and Bendon Publishing (color/activity and educational formats). Existing licenses for the property include Mad Engine (kid and adult t-shirts and sweatshirts), Issac Morris (kid sportswear, swimwear and outerwear) and a deal with Madame Tussaud’s for wax figures based on the animated characters.
4Kids Entertainment is appointed as the worldwide licensing agent for Karito Kids World Collection, a line of multi-cultural dolls and books designed to promote diversity. Created by KidsGive, Karito Kids, which its name from Esperanto – Karito means charity and love of one’s neighbor, represents 11-year-old girls from different ethnic backgrounds around the world. Each Karito Kids character comes with her own illustrated mystery adventure book set in her home country, the books are also available separately. Additionally, Karito Kids has an online component that allows consumers to help decide which causes receive contributions from Karito Kids purchases via an activation process using the special code that comes with each product. Once a code is entered online users can choose a cause from a list of contribution categories, and through a relationship with Plan International funds will be appropriately allocated to help families around the world.

Ted Brunt joins marblemedia as VP/Interactive Production. He will be responsible for developing and leading interactive production for the company, with his first efforts to focus on the web and mobile production of Skatoony, Taste Buds Season Two and The Dating Guy. Prior to joining marblemedia, Brunt toiled for six years at CBC (Canada) including as Sr. Director/Digital Entertainment Content and Chief Online Producer/Children’s Content. He also spent 14 years with TVOntario.
Titmouse, Inc., the animation and game company, names Sam Schoemann as VP/Sales and Marketing and Aaron Habibipour as its new Creative Director and Head of Titmouse Games division. Schoemann has worked in a range of business and creative roles for Fuel, Columbia TriStar International Television, Razorfish and Klasky Csupo, and worked on PBS series NOVA and The American Experience. Habibipour previously produced commercials with Brain Zoo Studios, and has also worked as a concept and storyboard artist, writer and producer and published author/illustrator.
