Cynopsis: Kids!

05/01/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 1, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Hasbro, Inc. and Discovery Communications are partnering in a new 50/50 joint venture that includes the creation of a new kid-targeted TV channel, which will take the place of the current Discovery Kids Network, and a corresponding website.  Set to launch in late 2010, the re-branded network will be targeted to kids 14 and under and will feature original programming based on Hasbro properties, Discovery Kids existing programming as well as third-part content.  The 13-year-old Discovery Kids Network will continue to operate until the debut of the new network (name TBA).  Discovery Communications will retain the Discovery Kids brand for, among other things, its international networks and its licensing and merchandising business.  Under the terms of the deal, Hasbro will purchase a 50% stake in the venture, which will hold the assets related to Discovery Kids Network in the US, for which Discovery Communications will receive $300 million.  The search for a President and GM for the network has begun. Discovery will handle ad sales, distribution, origination and other operational requirements for the venture, while Hasbro will provide studio-produced programming.  New programming will include shows (animated, live-action, game etc.) based on Hasbro’s Romper Room, Tonka, G.I. Joe, Transformers, My Little Pony as well as Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, and Cranium among others.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nickelodeon begins production in LA on its new live-action preschool series The JumpArounds.  Set to premiere this summer on the network, the 30-minute music appreciation-centric series encourages kids to express themselves through movement, song and music and features original music composed by Matter Music and lyrics by series creators Nadine van der Velde and Scott Kraft.  The JumpArounds revolves around four music school friends and their band that invite viewers to help solve everyday challenges in each episode.  In May, Nickelodeon and Noggin will air two new music videos featuring The JumpArounds in addition to launching the corresponding series website ( www.thejumparounds.com ).

CBeebies Radio (BBC Radio 7) commissions Novel Entertainment to produce a new kid’s radio show, Rockit’s Power (21×10).  The new series is set to premiere later this year and stars Rockit, the blue tree frog that also starred in two Novel TV series for CBeebies, Fimbles and The Roly Mo Show.  Targeted to preschoolers and parents, CBeebies on BBC Radio 7 moved into a new morning time slot earlier this month and now airs seven days a week from 5-8a.  Novel is also currently in production on a second season (52×10) of the animated series Horrid Henry for CITV.

A Roger Rabbit sequel?  Maybe so!  MTV‘s movie blog ( www.movieblog.mtv.com ) caught up with movie director Robert Zemeckis (Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) among others) who told the site, “I’ll tell you what is buzzing around in my head now that we have the ability-the digital tools, performance capture-I’m starting to think about Roger Rabbit.”

MORE KIDS STUFF

You know the old adage  if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Disney signed on the dotted line to become the 4th equity partner of Hulu, providing cash and its valuable content to the portal that has become the go to destination for premium content on the web. So, when the deal achieves regulatory approval, users will find full episodes of a range of series including select shows from Disney Channel, such as Wizards of Waverly Place and Phineas and Ferb.  For adults there will of course be ABC primetime programs like Lost, Desperate Housewives and Grey’s; ABC Family shows; ABC Daytime and SOAPnet serials; classic series like Who Wants to Be A Millionaire; as well as short form content and library titles from The Walt Disney Studios vault.  Disney will also be granted 3 seats on the Hulu board, to be held by Disney President and CEO Robert Iger; Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and President, Disney/ABC Television Group; and Kevin Mayer, EVP, Corporate Strategy, Business Development & Technology.

BabyTV launches in the Middle East on the pay TV service ADD.  Making its first step into the region, BabyTV will be available in a complete Arabic language version.  A Fox International Channel, BabyTV is now available in 80+ countries.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Zinkia signs a new merchandising deal for the CGI animated preschool series Pocoyo for Spain with shoe designer/manufacturer Crocs.  The new Pocoyo-themed Crocs are set to launch as retail in Spain from May 2009.  Pocoyo is co-produced by Zinkia and ITV Global Entertainment.
