Good morning. It’s Friday, March 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

UPFRONT 2007-2008 SEASON – NICKELODEON

Nickelodeon held its annual ad sales upfront presentation yesterday at the Nokia Theater in NYC, where the network continued to support its recent online and interactive initiatives, including its new daily ME:TV programming block, Nicktropolis its social network, and TurboNick 2.0, by announcing it will continue to integrate kid generated content into its TV and digital efforts.

To that end Nickelodeon has picked up iCarly (13×30′), a new live-action comedy series from producer Dan Schneider (All That, Drake & Josh) that stars Miranda Cosgrove (the little sister on Drake & Josh) as a tween who winds up as a celebrity based on her own web show, which she produces and webcasts from the third floor of her house.  Viewers will be invited to submit their own content to iCarly, which could wind up appear on the series or the corresponding webcast.  The series heads into production later this month and is set to premiere in September 2007.

Nickelodeon plans for 2007-2008 include the premiere of 700 new episodes of both new and returning series.  The network has picked up additional seasons of its series The Naked Brothers Band, Just Jordan, SpongeBob SquarePants, Zoey 101, The Fairly OddParents and the preschool series Dora the Explorer.  Joining the network’s lineup in fall 2007 are the previously announced new series Tak and the Power of JuJu, Back to the Barnyard and Ni Hao, Kai-lan.  Nickelodeon has also picked up three new animated series, which the network expects to launch in 2008.

  • The Umizumiz – slated to bow on Noggin in 2008, this preschool targeted interactive series is about a miniature urban repair squad that solves the daily problems encountered by the under five set using an “adventure math curriculum” that incorporates basic math skills.  The series features a mix of animation, photography, origami patterns and hip music. The Umizumiz was created by Soo Kim and Michael Smith and is co-created and executive produced by Jennifer Twomey.
  • Bubble Guppies – set to debut in 2008, the series is also for preschoolers this is an animated variety show set in a 3D, CGI animated underwater classroom.  The show builds off of ideas that bubble-up from preschoolers’ own discoveries. Bubble Guppies is created by Robert Scull and Jonny Belt along with Janice Burgess.
  • Making Friends – developed from Nickelodeon’s TurboNick broadband service, Making Friends is an animated series that revolves around the offbeat adventures of two friends who are polar opposites, Vendetta and Charlotte. Making Fiends was created by Amy Winfrey and is based on her popular Making Fiends online films

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney held its annual shareholder meeting in New Orleans yesterday morning, during which the studio announced that its has begun production on The Frog Princess, a new traditional animated musical fairy tale movie and that Pixar Animation Studio has commenced production, at long last, on Toy Story 3.

  • Expanding Disney’s Princess franchise, The Frog Princess is a hand-drawn animated musical set in New Orleans and introduces the new princess, Maddy, an African-American girl who resides in the French Quarter.  Based on an original story penned by John Musker & Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules), who will also direct, the movie will be steeped in the lore, magic and adventure of Louisiana’s bayous, Cajun charm and musical traditions.  Featuring songs and a score by Randy Newman, The Frog Princess is scheduled for a 2009 release.  Those looking for plot details are going to have to hang in there were no further details announced, though some drawings and a song, performed by Newman and a New Orleans jazz group, were showcased at the meeting.
  • Slated for release in 2010, Toy Story 3 features a screenplay by Michael Arndt, who won an Oscar last week for his original screenplay for Little Miss Sunshine.  And yes, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will reprise their roles as cowboy Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

Wowwee Ltd., a manufacturer high-tech consumer robotic and entertainment products, has teamed with Avi Arad and his Arad Productions to produce a mixed live-action/CGI animated movie based on Wowwee’s robotic toy, Robosapien, which is slated for release in 2009.  Arad, formerly Marvel Studios’ CEO and Chairman, is currently working on the live-action project Bratz: The Movie, based on MGA’s Bratz doll line.  Premium toys based on Robosapien and Wowwee’s other robotic characters are currently being offered as part of a promotion with McDonald’s Happy Meal and Mighty Kids Meal program.

HIT Entertainment has acquired the worldwide rights to girl-targeted publishing property Rainbow Magic from Working Partners.  Working closely with the creators of Rainbow Magic, Working Partners and the publishers in each territory, HIT plans to develop an animated TV series based on the property as well as content for new books and a consumer products program.  Targeted to Girls 5-9, Rainbow Magic is collection of 60+ books that follows the magical adventures of Kristy and Rachel and various groups of fairies and other creatures that inhabit Fairyland.  Launched in 2003, Rainbow Magic has sold some 10 million books in 20+ languages around the world.  Rainbow Magic is published by Orchard Book in the UK and by Scholastic in the US.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Atlantic Records will release the album TMNT – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Music from the Motion Picture online on March 13, 2007 followed in stores a week later, March 20.  The album features music from the CGI animated movie from a range of recording groups including Gym Class Heroes, Jet, Cute Is What We Aim For, Pepper, Meg & Dia, Billy Talent, This Providence, Cobra Starship, and Atlantic’s Big City Rock performing its version of the Lead Belly classic song Black Betty.  Additionally, the album will feature excerpts from the movie’s score, composed by Klaus Badelt.  The iTunes release of the album will also include an exclusive bonus acoustic version of Amber Pacific’s Save Me From Me, along with video of the band in the studio recording Fall Back Into My Life.  Opening nationwide on March 23, TMNT will be distributed domestically and in select international territories by Warner Bros. Pictures.  The Weinstein Company will distribute the film in other international territories.
