Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 7, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Hit Entertainment’s CEO, Bruce Steinberg said he would step down from his post after three years in that post.  Simultaneously, Hit announced Jeffrey D. Dunn would take over the reins as CEO.  Dunn, the former COO, Nickelodeon Networks and former President, Nickelodeon Film and Enterprises, MTV Networks, is charged with increasing Hit’s presence in North America and will be based in US, but will divide his time equally between NY and London.  Steinberg is credited with Hit’s considerable growth over the last several years.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Mike Newell will be headed to Morocco to direct the live-action adaptation of the Ubisoft video game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney, per AFP.com (Agence France-Presse).  Portions of the movie will also be filmed at Pinewood Shepperton Studios in the UK.  The movie is currently set for release in 2009.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Whole Foods Market introduces Whole Earth Generation, an original series of video podcasts aimed at raising kids’ environmental awareness, which will be available from March 11  April 29, 2008.  To host those the green-themed series, Whole Foods is on the search for six kid/teen 8-17 hosts with a casting call beginning this week at www.youtube.com/WhileFoodsMarket .  Casting calls will also be held throughout March in select Whole Foods Market stores.

Immigration is the topic of the of Nickelodeon’s newest episode of Nick News: I’m American! They’re Not!, which premieres Sunday, March 16 at 9p.  The episode explores the quagmire of US-born kids of undocumented immigrants living in the US, and the issues of deportation and how different families face those challenges.

Entertainment Rights’ Classic Media and Big Idea will attend MIPTV next month with number of offerings including: Postman Pat Special Delivery Service (SDS), Basil’s Swap Shop, Barbie and the diamond Castle and Barbie in a Christmas Carol, as well as the new animated George of the Jungle series.

DisneyChannel.com said it received nearly 50 million votes in a recent global poll (December 31, 2007  February 1, 2008), which offered kids a chance to shape elements of the upcoming original movie The Cheetah Girls One World.

A programming note for The N, the upcoming documentary Degrassi in Kenya has gone through a name-change and is now titled Degrassi: Doing What Matters.  The documentary will still bow on the network on Friday March 14 at 8p.

STONE SOUP

Verizon and Web Wise Kids, a youth-targeted nonprofit group that encourages making smart choices online, are teaming to educate kids/tweens how to use mobile phones safely and responsibly.  Under the effort, supported by a $300,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation, Web Wise Kids will develop and distribute educational internet safety game that outlines safe and responsible behavior and how to safeguard against being victimized online.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Blueprint Entertainment adds two to its executive team:

  • Michael Rosenberg is appointed SVP/Creative Affairs; he will oversee all series development and production in the US.  Rosenberg, a producer in his own right, joins Blueprint from Maverick where he founded and helmed its TV division.  Rosenberg will report to Blueprint co-founders John Moryaniss and Noreen Halpern.
  • Rachel Fulford is named VP/Creative Affairs; she will work out of Blueprint’s Toronto offices.  Fulford reports to Halpern.  Previously, Fulford served as Director/Original Production at Showcase, the Canadian specialty channel.
