More than 4.5 million U.S. households – or 3.9% of all homes – are still not ready for the pushed-back transition to all-digital broadcasting, according to Nielsen. This is an improvement of more than 570,000 homes since Nielsen last reported readiness status in mid-February. The Albuquerque – Santa Fe market continues to be the least prepared, with just under 10% of households completely unready and at risk of losing all television programming if the transition occurred today.
Research in Motion is inching closer to the launch of its own app store – the BlackBerry App World – stocked with games, social networks, personal productivity application and other gizmos RIM hopes will stave off iPhone envy. In a FAQ posting the company said the store will work with all BlackBerry smartphones running OS version 4.2.0 or higher and that paid apps will start at $2.99. (Developers can price their apps in $1 increments as long as they’re at least $2.99).
Developer MobileTribe unveiled a powerful new app for BlackBerry allowing users to blend data and address books from multiple services including Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, Plaxo, Yahoo and Google. The service allows you to view email, wall posts and friends requests from these social networks as well as view pictures on flickr, Picasa, Facebook, MySpace, Orkut.
Mobile comedy network ComedyTime announced a partnership with Zannel to create what it calls the first comedy standup video application available on the iPhone. The Joke-A-Day app, due out soon, will feature ComedyTime’s standup comedians and their “Funnysodes” – original short-form episodic programming.
Casual game portal MSN Games launched two game applications on the social networking sites Facebook and MySpace. Classic puzzle game “Hexic” and a modern update on “Chess” were both developed by Microsoft’s Carbonated Games studio and the applications were developed by Plexipixel.
Entertainment related creative and technical services company Ascent Media Group announced four new executive appointments: Former VP of AOL Software Robert Blatt will serve as SVP, Product Development; former COLT Telcom director Brendan Corrigan takes the role of SVP, Content Distribution and Transport; HP executive Mick Bass joins as VP, Alliance Management and Strategy Cafe veteran Mark Laudenslager joins as VP, Digital Media Operations and Content Management.
Digital Public Square is the brainchild of Vivek Kundra, the 34-year-old CTO of the District of Columbia who was just named the nation’s first Chief Information Officer, in charge of dragging the government into the digital age. In it Vivek applies a range of useful tools designed to empower the public and help government run more efficiently. Many of the tools are the result of an “Apps for Democracy” contest launched last year to encourage developers to dream up open source applications of use to the city. D.C. Historic Tours is a Google Maps creation combining Flickr photos with Wikipedia entries providing facts about the history of the city. iLive.at prioritizes information by neighborhood for new residents including crime data, conveniences, public transport, etc. The Park It DC app, also embeddable as a widget, allows you to check a specific area in the District for parking information. It will be interesting to see how the young man can deliver on the Obama administration’s crowdsourcing promises. One of Vivek’s first moves as CTO of the District was to post government contracts up for bid on YouTube. Halliburton – if you’re reading this – you may want to find some web video experts.
