CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

03/31/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 31, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group will become the first movie studio to provide a download-to-own movies day and date with the movie’s release on DVD.  The first movie this will apply to is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, scheduled for release to DVD and now also for download and on April 4 at midnight.  Here’s the hitch – it’s only available right now in the Netherlands and the Dutch-speaking Belgium, with no information on when it may be available here in the US.  Also on that date, under the licensing agreement with a specialty retailer in the Netherlands called Free Record Shop, customers will also be able to select from some 100 Warner Bros. films and legally download a permanent copy of these movies (www.FreeRecordShop.nl). Can you download from this website if your not in the Netherlands? Well, I haven’t tried it yet because it’s not quite April 4, but I may!  All of these movie downloads will be copy protected by Microsoft’s Windows Digital Rights Management Software.

Imax Corporation and Warner Bros. will convert about 20 minutes of the new Superman Returns movie from 2D to Imax 3D.  Bryan Singer, the Director of Superman Returns, has created as series of visual cues that will indicate when audience members should put on/take off their 3D glasses during the select scenes that utilize the technology.  Superman Returns will be released simultaneously to Imax and regular movie theatres on June 30, 2006.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBS and DIC have unveiled the programming slate for the 2006/07 CBS’s Saturday Morning Secret Slumber Party the new Saturday morning block, which will launch September 16, 2006,  A time rundown will be announced later.  Targeted to K6-12, the three hour block will be Educational/Informational (E/I) compliant and will include both animated and live action shows.  The block will also feature interstitial wrap-around segments with messaging promoting healthy eating and lifestyle choices.  Both the interstitial segments and the new series are being developed in consultation with noted researchers, educators, professors and media experts in the areas of kid health and education.

Animated Series:

  • Horseland (new series) – a mixed 2D & CGI animated adventure series about a group of kids and horses at a stable where the animals talk to each other and the kids learn about a range of issues.  The show is based on the website www.horseland.com, where kids can train, buy, sell and breed virtual horses.
  • Kooky Kitchen (new series) – a cooking series that takes place in a secret kitchen that lies beneath a famous restaurant and the chef that takes guests on culinary adventures through a Magic Recipe book.
  • Littlest Pet Shop (new series) – is about little pets that help their kid owners by looking at shared life experiences.
  • Sabrina: The Animated Series
  • Trollz
  • Madeline

Live Action/Reality:

  • Cake (new series) – a live-action show within a show about a 13-yr-old girl who hosts a cable access show, with her two friends, where they show kids how to make things
  • Dance, Dane, Dance! (new series / working title)  contestants learn about different styles of dance, and cultures they come from.  A Pop act will perform in each episode.

Funimation Entertainment, Mainframe Entertainment and skateboarder extraordinaire Tony Hawk have entered into a distribution and brand management deal for the new CG animated direct-to-DVD feature Tony Hawk in Boom Boom Sabotage.  Under the deal Funimation has acquired domestic and Japanese home entertainment rights to the direct to DVD movie slated for release in fall 2006.  Mainframe developed the project with Hawk, and produced the film in its Vancouver studio.

UPFRONT: ADULT SWIM

At its upfront presentation last night in NYC, Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim showed off its slate of new series, projects in development and its upcoming feature film release, The Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie Film for Theatres, which is set for a fall 2006 release.  If you are thinking Adult Swim isn’t for kids, well go to the head of the class because you are right.  That said, just about all of the shows on Adult Swim are hysterical and I love them.  The network also has several returning series for next season including Robot Chicken; Family Guy; Tom Goes to The Mayor; The Venture Bros.; Aqua Teen Hunger Force; 12oz. Mouse; Squidbillies; and Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law.

Without further annoyances here is what is headed our way from the newly expanded Adult Swim:

  • Death Clock Metalocalypse:  This series is sort of an homage to the movie This Is Spinal Tap and focuses on the exploits of a Norwegian metal band, Dethlock, that is both very talented and “dangerously stupid” and leaves a trail of destruction in their wake wherever they go.  There will be special guest voice-overs from members of Metallica.  Created and Executive Produced by Brandon Small and Tommy Blacha, the series is set to debut in fall 2006 (20 eps).  Blacha will also provide the heavy metal music for the series.
  • Frisky Dingo:  The series features supervillain Killface and his nemesis, Awesome-X, it would be your average good vs. evil, except both Killface and X are embroiled in the minutia of daily corporate life, including the watching out for the costs of their missions, toy-sales and of course their health plan.  The animation has a great look and the series will launch September 2006 (13 eps).
  • Assy McGee:  Have you read the kid book, The Day My Butt Went Psycho?  Well, think a CSI/Law & Order butt gone crazy with weaponry.  And yes Assy McGee is a … well, ya know … an ass.  Created by Carl Adams, Jon Benjamin and Matt Harrigan, Assy McGee will debut in December (13 eps)
  • Saul of the Mole Men:  First introduced at last year’s Adult Swim upfront, this live action/puppet/green screen entry comes out of the Sid and Marty Kroftt school of production, sorry no Sleestaks though.  On an expedition to the Earth’s core a terra-naut (opposite of astronaut) happens into a civilization of Mole Men.  The series debuts in late 2006 (20 eps).
  • Lucy: Daughter of the Devil: Also introduce at the last upfront, this CGI animated series stars Lucy, a young girl living in San Francisco with her dad, who just happens to be Satan.  Lucy is reasonably concerned when she starts dating a great guy who might be the second coming.  The series comes from Loren Bouchard.  The series will debut fall 2006 (10 eps).

Pilots in development:

  • Korgot of Barbaria:  The series is an animated fantasy/action/adventure/comedy about Korgoth, a savage from the frozen north who thaws out and may be the only key to survival.  Created by Aaron Springer, the pilot (30 min) will air in September.
  • That Crook’d ‘Sip: The Beauregard Family is a dysfunctional family, stuck in the past of the Old South and yet the new ‘Dirty South’ surrounds them.  Created by Jacob Escobe and Nick Weidenfeld the pilot is currently in production at Williams Street and will air in fall 2006.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Canada’s YTV will premiere The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers, its flash animated action series, on Sunday, May 7 at 12:30p.  The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers series is based on the web shorts of the same name, and follows the misadventures of three daredevil brothers who live for action and excitement.  Targeted to K6-12, The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers was created by UK-based Pesky Animation, and is a Pesky and Studio B Productions co-production produced for YTV.

Also in Canada, Family Channel will make premiere Go Figure, a Disney Channel original movie, on Friday, May 26 at 7:30p.  The live action movie is about Katelin (14) who wants more than anything to be world class champion figure skater.  In order to train with a famous Russian figure skater at a private academy, Katelin joins the girls’ ice hockey team to earn the only scholarship to the school. Go Figure debuted in the US in summer 2005.  The movie is a production of Just Singer Entertainment and Salty Pictures, Inc.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Rhino Entertainment and Destroy Entertainment, a youth culture company, have teamed up to create, market, and sell products for online and mobile that will be available through all mobile carriers.  The Rhino/Destroy network of properties covers a range of action sports and youth lifestyle content including sports, surf, snow, skate, tattoos, graffiti, music, and import models and so on.  Additionally, Rhino and Destroy will also offer downloadable long-form and short-form video products through digital retail, as well as through the destroynetwork.com site.  Rhino and Destroy will include promotional inserts in all Destroy DVD titles, and consumers will be able to sample extra mobile content on those DVDs prior to purchasing.  The content will be aggressively marketed through youth entertainment and media outlets, social networks sites and via online and viral marketing efforts.

Nick Records in partnership with Sony BMG Strategic Marketing Group will release the new CD Diego, Dora & Friends’ Animal Jamboree in stores on April 11, 2006.  The CD is comprised of 10 animal centric songs including Rockin’ Robin, Down by the Bay, The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Joy To The World, along with several written exclusively for the release.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

MGM has formed MGM’s New Media division and named Douglas A. Lee as EVP to oversee the new unit.  Lee will oversee MGM’s digital distribution strategy and lead the studio’s broadband and wireless efforts.  Sony Corporation of America is a strategic partner of MGM.  Most recently, Lee was the founder of Lee Consulting Company in NY and served as a consultant to various media companies including Comcast, Court TV and The Hinduja Group, a multiple system operator in India.

David Goldstein has been upped to VP/Government and Regulatory Affairs, Chum Limited.  He will be responsible for all facets of regulatory affairs and government relations for Chum.  Goldstein will report to President/CEO Jay Switzer, and will continue to be based in Ottawa.  Most recently, Goldstein was National Director of Government Affairs, Radio and Television.

Michael Karsh has been upped to Manager/Current Series & Development of Programming and Production, National Geographic Television & Film.  Among his responsibilities, Karsh will oversee production on NGT&F’s kid targeted comedy/adventure series Iggy Arbuckle as well as coordinate the research and library content for the preschool series Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies, which features a combination of animation with archival footage from National Geographic.  Additionally, NGT&F has upped Andy Riddle to Sr. Administrative Assistant.
