Cynopsis: Kids!

3/02/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 2, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Electronic Arts has made all of the music/soundtracks from its current and previous video games available for purchase at the iTunes Store.  Fan can go to www.ea.com/eatrax where they can select the EA game music and then click over to an iMix of that EA game on iTunes.  For those skeptics among us, they do mean all music, which includes exclusive mixes, non-album cuts and previously unavailable international tracks. EA plans to continue adding songs/scores/themes/beats/ringtones from EA games, old and new, to the site.

Howard Myers and Steve Wynne, former Buena Vista International Television and Warner Bros. International Television execs, respectively, have teamed up to launch Rival Media Ltd, an international content business.  Based in the UK, Rival Media has inked its first commission to produce an international music concert and event for Disney TV.  Additionally, the company is currently in discussions with UK and European broadcasters, and also in negotiations to team with a US producer.  Wynne and Myers are both Joint Managing Directors of Rival Media.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Spidey is spinning his way back to TV in a new animated series, tentatively titled, The Amazing Spider-Man, slated to launch in early 2008 on Kids’ WB on The CW.  Based on Marvel’s super-hero Spider-Man, the series is the first production from Culver Entertainment, Sony Pictures’ new TV company.  The series begins as Spidey (nee 16-year-old Peter Parker) is coming to the end of summer vacation, the first with his newfound powers, and he is heading into his junior year of high school, where in addition to homework and a social life he must protect his new identity.

Same web – different medium:  Sony and Spidey will get the summer started with the release its feature film Spider-Man 3 on May 3, 2007.  On that note Sony will give Spider-Man fans a sneak peek at the upcoming Columbia Pictures movie with a 1-minute clip airing this Monday, March 5, during Heroes on NBC.  The clip will include a cliffhanging moment and so as not to tie folks up in knots, fans will be directed to NBC.com where an extended 6-minute version of the clip that includes the outcome, will be available for 24-hours.  And … yes, there is more, a new trailer for Spider-Man 3 is set to bow in movie theaters on Friday, March 9, in the previews before the movie 300.  No doubt the trailer will be available online shortly thereafter.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel in South Africa has expanded its broadcast day to a 24/7 programming schedule on MultiChoice’s DStv platform.  Under a multi-year pact with MultiChoice, Disney Channel launched on DStv on September 25, 2006, initially broadcasting 16 hours a day (6a-10p), seven days a week.  Disney Channel is available to DStv subscribers across South and Sub Saharan Africa.

Disney Channel (US) has optioned a second cycle of its preschool series Johnny and the Sprites.  Season two is slated to begin production this fall 2007 at Kaufman Astoria Studios in NYC.  The long-form program bowed on the network’s Playhouse Disney programming block in January 2007, and continues to air Saturdays and Sundays at 10a.

After more than a year in production, PBS has taken the wraps off PBS Teachers, a new portal created specifically for educators of kids in pre-kindergarten – 12th grade.  PBS Teachers is designed to be a one-stop resource for teachers, providing them free standards-based lesson plans, classroom activities, interactive resources and so on, all organized by subject, grade level, and topic.  Additionally, the site includes a new blog, Media Infusion, which offers conversations with other classroom teachers and ed tech experts about information on using media and technology with students and as a resource for educators looking for other curriculum tools, video products and professional development opportunities. MARKETING/LICENSING

Toei Animation Company will launch its new website, www.toei-anim.com , on Tuesday, March 13, 2007.  In addition to being the source for all corporate information (news, contacts etc.), Toei’s new website will also serve as an interactive consumer resource including overviews of its animated series, history, and character descriptions; downloadable artwork; video clips; behind the scenes information; product launches.

STONE SOUP

Today is 10th Annual Read Across America Day, the National Education Association’s (NEA) event that aims to get kids everywhere reading, which takes place each year on or around Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  Dr. Seuss (aka Theodore Geisel) was born March 2, 1904.  While Read Across America gets lots of celebrities and politicians out to mark the day and issuing reading challenges to kids, the NEA also offers parents, caregivers and kids activities and resources throughout the year to keep them interested and excited about reading.  Read Across America Day information, resources and a list of events taking place around the country today can be found at www.nea.org/readacross , additionally, related activities can be found at http://www.seussville.com/ .
