CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
03/24/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, March 24, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Funimation Entertainment has developed a two-hour anime block for syndication, made up of anime programming from Funimation’s anime library. Distributed by Olympusat, Colours TV is the first network to pick up the block, and will air it seven days a week from 10p-12midnight. Colours TV is available as part of Dish Network’s basic satellite TV package. Olympusat also distributes the 24/7 digital Funimation Channel. Funimation Entertainment is a subsidiary of Navarre Corporation.
Fox Searchlight Pictures and entered into a two-year, first-look deal with Hard C, the newly-formed production company of writer/director Jason Reitman and producer Daniel Dubiecki. Hard C plans to attract small funny projects, be a launch pad four young comedic filmmakers and actors as well as being home for Reitman and Dubiecki’s projects. Together Reitman and Dubiecki are the team behind Searchlight’s movie Thank You For Not Smoking, which opened last weekend. The movie is not for kids (it’s rated R), but it is funny. The two have collaborated on five award-winning short films over the last decade as well as directing and producing TV commercials
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Nickelodeon has entered into several deals in Japan to develop original animation content as well as acquire programming that will air on the network in the US, including:
- A deal with Japanese broadcaster and NHK affiliate, Domo Production Committee, to co-develop and produce short form series (26 x 2 min) based on NHK’s well-known and popular mascot Domo-kun, who also stars in a stop-motion series. Hatched from an egg, Domo-kun is a strong yet gentle brown furry creature, who has a pointy tooth-filled mouth, which is always open, loves garage band music and has when stressed or angry has a bit of a flatulence issue. The new Domo-kun series will air on Nicktoons Network in the US.
- Nick has also entered into a development deal with Japan’s Polygon Pictures, a 3-D animation house, to co-develop a new animated series based on the graphic novel, Akihabara@Deep, which is described by the networks as an edgy, colorful and fast-paced cyber-detective comedy/action/drama set in Tokyo.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Upper Deck Entertainment has entered into a partnership with Rittenhouse Archives, a sci-fi collectibles company, to create and distribute collectible trading card sets for upcoming Marvel’s feature films. Under the sublicense deal from UDE and Marvel Entertainment, Rittenhouse Archives will release the first trading card set, based on the Fox and Marvel Studio’s movie X-Men: The Last Stand, this May. The card sets will feature previously unseen images from the movie as well as autograph cards from X-Men actors such as Patrick Stewart and Kelsey Grammer. X-Men: The Last Stand will be released May 26, 2006.
VIZ Media, LLC will release the anime series Naruto on DVD in the US, with the first volume of Enter Naruto next Tuesday, March 28. The first Enter Naruto is comprised of four episodes and also includes a Naruto mini-poster. Since 2003, the Naruto series has been serialized in the US edition of the Shonen Jump and as a graphic novel series both published here by VIZ Media. The Naruto series launched fall 2005 in the US on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block; the In Japan the Naruto manga launched in the Japanese version of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1999, which was followed by the debuted of the anime series on TV Tokyo in 2002.
In other Naruto news … Panini, a producer of collectible products, and Inkworks, the trading card manufacturer, have released a new series of Naruto: Ninja Ranks trading cards. The base set of series includes 72 cards as well as randomly inserted bonus cards, with each pack containing nine trading cards. Naruto: Ninja Ranks trading cards are produced by Panini in the US, and distributed in the US exclusively by Inkworks.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Correction: It is Zola Mashariki, Fox Searchlight’s new VP/Production, who began as a production intern for the company five years ago and not Cynthia Lewis, President/Production as posted here yesterday. Prior to joining Fox Searchlight Mashariki was a corporate attorney with Proskauer Rose LLP in NYC.
