Cynopsis: Kids!

03/14/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

UPFRONT 2008-2009 SEASON – NICKELODEON

The kids’ TV ad sales upfront season got under way yesterday morning as the Nickelodeon & MTVN Kids and Family Group held its annual presentation at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC.  Nickelodeon’s upfront focused on the business and brand’s ability to be “virtually everywhere kids are,” across all media platforms, products and its newer ventures into music, with new partner Sony/BMG Music Entertainment, and hotels, cruises and a new theme park.  In addition to showcasing its new and returning series, specials and projects, the network also recognizing and welcoming its early audience, which grew up in Nick’s kids only or them vs. us era, who now have families of their own.  Nickelodeon also introduced the new incarnation of Big Help, its pro-social initiative that is now more focused on the green effort.  Feeling strongly about the upfront season again this year, the network says it has had early interest from non-traditional kid advertisers including the auto industry, retail and those reaching for demos (kids, young adults, parents) independently as well as the family as a whole.

Here is what is coming our way from Nickelodeon:

  • Gym Teacher: The Movie (August 2008):  Christopher Meloni (Law and Order: SVU, Oz, Runaway Bride) was on hand to introduce Nickelodeon’s first original TV movie.  The movie revolves around Meloni’s character, Dave Stewie, a failed Olympic contender (I’ll just say “ouch”) who becomes a gym teacher, and Nathan Kress (iCarly) as Roland a student without a shred of athletic ability.  Stewie finds a chance for another kind of gold as Gym Teacher of the Year Award, but it isn’t going to be easy with Roland.  The movie, which also stars Amy Sedaris and David Alan Grier, is directed by Paul Dinello and produced in association with Dolphin Entertainment, with Executive Producers the fab Lauren Levine, Stanley M. Brooks, Jim Head and Bill O’Dowd.
  • One 4 All (fall 2008):  This is a live-action scripted comedy about a young singer who recruited to move to LA by a top record producer, but only agrees if he can bring his three best friends.  The series is created by the great Scott Fellows (Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, Johnny test, The Fairly OddParents).
  • The Big Green Help: The network’s long-time pro-social initiative, The Big Help, grows into a greener version of its former self.  The Big green Help will further empowering kids to take action in learn about and get involved in caring for the environment through a multiplatform campaign (
  • www.thebiggreenhelp.com ) that bows next month.  Included is a new multiplayer green game that is designed to teach techniques on curtailing energy waste, encouraging recycling and planting more trees.  The network continues to partner with national grassroots environmental and youth-focused organizations that will allow kids to get involved on a local basis.

  • The Mighty B!:  Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live) showed off the new animated series The Mighty B!, which she co-created and stars in, and is set to premiere on the network April 26.
  • Previously announced new programming: the new Dance on Sunset series bow Saturday, March 29 at 9:30p, following the Kids’ Choice Awards; joining Nick at Nite in fall 2009 is Chris Rock’s comedy Everybody Hates Chris.
  • Returning series: SpongeBob SquarePants returns for a sixth season of 26 episodes; The Fairly OddParents receives a new season pick up of 20 episodes; Back at the Barnyard will produce an additional 20 episodes; and Nick Jr. picks up The Backyardigans for another 20 episodes.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

A new Muppet movie is in the works.  Disney is working with actor/writer Jason Segal (Freaks and Geeks) and director Nick Stoller, according to Variety.  The two will pen the script, with Stoller set to direct.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Juniper Content’s Hispanic kids-centric Sorpresa Network is set to launch this March 31, on Comcast’s Cable Latino, and Cable Latino Completo packages (channel 617) in the Fresno, California designated market area (DMA), which includes Fresno, Merced, Los Banos, Visalia and Tulare.  Sorpresa is available in 1+ million HH and in 22 of the top 25 Hispanic DMAs.

Dynamite Entertainment is set to launch a new Buck Rogers comics series under an agreement with the estate of the Buck Rogers creator, John Flint Dille, which owns franchise owner.  The deal allows for the creation of Buck Rogers comics, collections, including classic material, comics-based fine art prints, posters, action figures, trading cards, statues, and other collectibles.  Providing character designs for the new Buck Rogers comics are Alex Ross and John Cassaday, with Ross providing a cover for the first issue, and Cassaday serving as the regular series cover artist.  Dynamite Publisher and President, Nick Barrucci, says the job now is to find the writer and artist to help bring Buck back.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios names Mary Parent as Chairperson, Worldwide Motion Picture Group.  Parent, former Vice Chairman/Worldwide Production, Universal Pictures, will have oversights of worldwide theatrical production, distribution, marketing and business affairs for MGM.  She will report directly to Harry E. Sloan, Chairman and CEO, and to the MGM Board of Directors.

Michael G Riley is named SVP and GM, Disney Radio.  Relocating to Burbank, Riley is responsible for strategic management of the network and its 42 owned radio stations, and will oversee the programming, distribution, and online and marketing teams.  He will report to Rich Ross, President, Disney Channels Worldwide.  Riley joins Radio Disney from Turner where he was SVP and GM, Turner Broadcasting System, Europe, Middle East and Africa.  Riley takes over the Radio Disney reins from Jill Casagrande, who left the company last month after many years.

RATINGS

The new animated series The Spectacular Spider-Man, premiered with back-to-back episodes on Kids’ WB! on The CW last Saturday, March 8 at 10a and 10:30a, helping to earn the block its highest HH rating (1.1/3) so far for the 2007-2008 season.  The 10a episode debut of The Spectacular Spider-Man increased K2-11 (1.4/5) by +25% over the time period last week, with the 10:30 episode building with K2-11 (1.7/7), which is up +75% vs. last week.
