Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 13, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The 2009 TV upfront season got underway yesterday as Nickelodeon held its annual presentation, at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, where the net offered its upbeat “Bigger and Bolder” plans as it heads into its 30th year and, with the help of a cast of celebrities, showcased upcoming shows, movies and consumer efforts and network and brand plans.  The network’s big picture plan includes bringing all of its TV channels and websites under one banner, the Nickelodeon brand, which targets the whole family beginning 4Q 2009.  The hope is that with everything under the Nickelodeon umbrella kids and adults alike will be able to find whatever content they are looking for on TV, online and so on. will expand to serve as a hub for Nickelodeon’s digital properties and brands.  Nick also confirmed that come 4Q 2009 its preschool-aimed channel Noggin will become Nick Jr., and The N will be renamed TEENick.  Nickelodeon maintains its place as the top-rated basic cable kids, network with the 4Q-to-date (12/29/08-3/10/09), Nickelodeon holds 63+% of the gross ratings points (GRPs) in the marketplace.

  • The network featured a clip M. Night Shyamalan‘s much-anticipated movie, The Last Airbender, from Paramount and Nickelodeon Movie‘s introduced by the movie’s producer Kathleen Kennedy and actor Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), who plays Lord Prince Zuko in the film.  The movie is based on Nickelodeon’s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
  • Michael Eisner, former Disney Chairman, joked with the crowd while offering background and a look at his Tornante Company’s new Nick at Nite the stop-motion animated primetime comedy Glenn Martin, DDS.  The previously announced series will debut this summer.
  • Also highlighted was the upcoming DreamWorks Animations new animated series Penguins of Madagascar, which premieres on Nick, Saturday, march 28 at 9:30p following Nickelodeon’s 22nds annual Kids’ Choice Awards.
  • In other TV series news, the network says it plans to add seven new shows to its line-up, a combination of live-action and animated shows as well as TV movies and game shows, with announcements on those forthcoming.
  • Nickelodeon inks a two-year deal with Nick Cannon to serve as the Honorary Chairman of The N (soon to be TEENick), a creative consultancy under which he will be appear on air and help bring show and special ideas to the network.  Among his first projects, Cannon will host and executive produce The Halo Awards (working title), a show celebrating regular teens who are making a difference in the world and set to bow winter 2009.  He will also executive produce a new original two-hour TV movie.
  • On the consumer products side, talked about SpongeBob SquarePants’ 10th Anniversary that includes Walmart Stores celebrating with a special SpongeBob shop, “The Happy Place” all this month.  The shop offers exclusive SpongeBob apparel and accessories, a DVD package, the first direct-to-DVD title SpongeBob vs. The Big One from Paramount Home Entertainment, a new CD of greatest hits from Sony, electronics, toys and so on.

Summit Entertainment reportedly finds a director for its upcoming movie Eclipse, the third movie in the Twilight Saga, in Spain’s Juan Antonio Bayona, according to Variety.  Eclipse is set for release on June 30, 2010.  Summit has not yet confirmed their choice.  Scary movie fans know Juan Antonio Bayona as the director of The Orphanage.  Twilight Saga’s New Moon, the second movie in the series, is being directed by Chris Weitz and will open November 20, 2009.

Marvel Entertainment plays with its feature film release schedule and in doing so shifts the release of The Avengers by almost a year to May 4, 2012, per The AP.  The movie had been slated to release July 15, 2011.  Also moving release dates are Marvel’s Thor, which will now open June 17, 2011, versus the original July 16, 2010, and The First Avenger: Captain America, now set for July 22, 2011 instead of May 6, 2011.  Additionally, Marvel confirmed Sony Pictures will release Spider-Man 4 on May 6, 2011.

Will he or won’t he?  After much discussion, it appears a deal has finally been struck that has Mickey Rourke joining the cast of Marvel‘s Iron Man 2 movie, per Deadline Hollywood Daily.  Rourke will reportedly play a Russian villain.  The sticking point had been over Rourke’s fee for the movie.  Jon Favreau returns to direct Iron Man 2, which is set to begin shooting soon and is scheduled for release on May 7, 2010.

Universal will release Ridley Scott‘s Robin Hood movie, starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, on May 14, 2010.  The movie was previously titled Nottingham.

CBBC‘s long-running daily current affairs series Newsround will explore the ways that bereavement affects kid’s in the new documentary Gone, Monday, march 30 at 6:30p.  The special will then run on BBC One on March 31, time TBA.  Hosted by Barney Harwood, the special follows four kids and their stories of loss.
