CBS News will expand its news magazine 60 Minutes to the global marketplace. While there are other versions of 60 Minutes airing in various countries, they not using the same U.S. format. This new global expansion would offer a consistent look using two pieces from the U.S. show as well as a segment produced with 60 Minutes’ specifications tailored for each international country. Patti Hassler will be the Executive Editor of 60 Minutes Global, the division that will head this international effort in addition to other digital brand extensions.

truTv’s series debut of Black Gold Wednesday night (10p) drew in 861,000 A18-49 viewers, 950,000 A25-54 viewers as well as 1.6 million total viewers.

Big Ten Network tackled a cable distribution agreement with Comcast Corp. resulting in the network jumping up to 12 million homes in the Big Ten region and nationally up to approximately 50 million homes. The deal puts Big Ten Network on expanded basic in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio starting in August through early 2009. Following the football and basketball seasons, Big Ten Network would be placed on Comcast’s digital service.

More sports TV news, NBC Sports and the University of Notre Dame signed a new five-year pact allowing NBC to televise Notre Dame home football games through 2015, which takes the partnership to 25 years since it began in 1991. The terms give NBC rights to eight Notre Dame home games from 2011-2015: seven games at Notre Dame Stadium and an extra eighth off-site home game for the network’s primetime schedule each year.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

The Weinstein Co. announced its desire to take on television production for broadcast and cable in a bigger way with a first-time development slate, per Variety. Currently, TWC produces Project Runway, the spinoff series Models of the Runway for Lifetime, and HBO’s upcoming No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.  In addition, the company hired David Spiegelman from New Line as President/Domestic TV Distribution (yeah David!) Highlights of the new projects in development include:

  • The Nanny Diaries – a half-hour version based on the theatrical release for Lifetime.
  • Pygmalion – a one-hour competition reality show also for Lifetime in association with Ricochet (Supernanny).
  • Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous – an updated version of the 1980s show in association with 2929 Productions.
  • Lovecraft – about Tacee Webb, a multi-tasking businesswoman who is involved with fashion through American Apparel and Lovecraft Bio-Fuels.
  • By Order of the President – scripted thriller based on the novels by W.E.B. Griffin
  • Fat Cats – a comedy from Seinfeld writer Jill Franklyn.
  • Project Triple Threat – reality competition series with 16 contestants who are all talented with acting, singing and dancing battling for a record contract and a Hollywood musical gig.

A pilot of an updated version of the classic game show The Match Game is on tap at TBS, reports THR.  Signed on to play the game are panelist players Sarah Silverman, Norm McDonald, Super Dave Osborne, Rashida Jones, Niecy Nash and Scott Thompson.  Hosting duties go to Andrew Daly.

Fox Reality Channel is starting Gimme My Reality Show!, a new competition series spotlighting D-list celebrities that have appeared on reality shows but never had their own, according to Variety. The celebrities will participate in challenges to shine the brightest in front of a panel of judges.  The winner will have a chance to star in their own four-episode unscripted show. Gimme My Reality Show! debuts October 11 at 12a and is produced by Natural 9 Entertainment.

RSN Resort TV hired Sarah Burke and Chris Davenport, both freeskiers to co-host summer episodes for the network’s morning show RSN Outdoors. RSN Outdoors is a national network providing resort visitors information, real-time local weather segments and events.
