07.03.09

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 3, 2009, and this is your first early morning briefing.  And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

Saturday’s Finale:
Fox Reality Channel: Sex Decoy: Love Stings at 10p

Sunday’s Premieres:
The Style Network: Ruby at 8p
Animal Planet: Untamed & Uncut at 9p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Discovery Channel explores the vast Pacific Ocean in a new six-part special, Wild Pacific opening July 12 at 8p beginning with the first three episodes. The second three episodes will air on July 13 starting at 8p. Narrated by Mike Rowe and produced by the BBC, Wild Pacific will chart the formation of the 10,000 Pacific islands, lagoons and reefs from steady volcanic eruptions as well as the animals, fish and people who live, adapt and survive in this environment.

ABC Family is back on July 28 at 8p with new episodes of 10 Things I Hate About You, featuring the adventures of the Stratford sisters played by Lindsey Shaw and Meaghan Martin. Carter Covington serves as the series’ executive producer.

MSG debuted its new original series EBC Live at Rucker Park last night at 7p. Twelve more episodes will follow on Thursdays at 7p, taking viewers inside the Entertainers Basketball Classic (EBC) Tournament at Rucker Park located in Harlem. The half-hour series, hosted by Michael Bivins profiles the EBC Tournament players, announcers, spotlights the celebrities attending plus stories about the famous streetball tourney. The EBC Tournament has a Men’s division sanctioned by the NBA and the NCAA in addition to Women’s and AAU Youth divisions. The series is produced by EBC in collaboration with MSG.

Television is a more effective platform for commercials than the internet or mobile devices, so says a new research study initiated by the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing and the research company NeuroFocus, cites Adweek. TV ranked high in the areas of emotional engagement, commercial recall and intent to purchase while viewers find advertising on mobile devices and online to be less engaging. The report did mention mobile devices provide overall good recall since the user focuses on what is directly in front of them. The study also pointed out commercials on TV and mobile both are good at closing a sale, though internet ads require multiple exposures before generating a buying response.

BBC America debuts the season four US premiere of You Are What You Eat on July 7 at 8p. Dr. Gillian McKeith returns as the tough diet coach and detective traveling the UK to find weight-loss cases needing her help the most. During this new season, Dr. McKeith will even invite patients to move into her house so they can follow her rules to the “T.”

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Jewish Life Television (JLTV) made a distribution deal with DIRECTV that began June 24. JLTV, offering Jewish-themed programming 24/7, is now available to DIRECTV customers who have multi-satellite equipment.

History Channel UK, jointly operated by A&E Television Networks (AETN) and British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) switched its name to AETN UK effective immediately. The name change was spurred on by the rapid growth of the company’s stable of networks in the UK from one in 1995 to seven as of this year. The company’s brands in the UK include HISTORY, BIO, Crime & Investigation Network (CI), Military History, HISTORY HD, BIO HD and Crime & Investigation Network HD. Throughout the world, AETN’s international channels have increased to 42 and are available in more than 140 countries, reaching over 200 million TV households in 25+ languages.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

44 Blue Productions captures new footage inside infamous prisons throughout the world for its most recent edition of prison series Lockup: World Tour airing on MSNBC. The production company will film inside maximum security prisons in nine countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, with those specific countries including Serbia, Poland and the Czech Republic, then to South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan. The Middle East prisons will include those in Israel, Jordan and Turkey. 44 Blue Productions began the series in 2000, shooting maximum security prisons across America then added the versions Lockup: Extended Stay and Lockup: Raw. Rasha Drachkovitch serves as the series executive producer for 44 Blue Productions and Elise Warner is executive producer for MSNBC.

ABC is moving forward on the development phase of a new reality competition series, The Fast & the Funniest, described as a cross between Last Comic Standing and The Amazing Race. Page Hurwitz and Javier Winnik (Last Comic Standing) are behind the project as is Keep Calm Productions. The series will follow a group of stand-up comedians as they compete in challenges and performances around the country and the first three to reach the last city will do a comedy face-off for a cash prize. ABC’s order is cast contingent and if approved would join the network’s lineup in late midseason or next summer.

Christian Slater, last seen on TV in NBC’s cancelled series My Own Worst Enemy, is in talks to headline ABC’s new series The Forgotten from Warner Bros. TV and Jerry Bruckheimer. Slater would replace UK actor Rupert Penry-Jones who starred in the pilot episode in this mystery drama about a team of amateur detectives led by an ex-cop (Slater) whose young daughter was kidnapped three years prior. The series is also currently recasting the female member of the detective band. The Forgotten is scheduled to premiere on ABC September 22 at 10p.

Casting Call: BBC Worldwide is producing the new television series Bank of Mom & Dad for SOAPnet (debuts September 30 at 10p) and is looking for young women age 25-32 that are spending too much and in deep credit card debt with parents who are concerned about the situation. Applicants and their families must live in the New York tri-state area. To be considered for the show along with your parents, send an email to
and include your name, age, location, phone/email and description of your financial situation.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  The race is on for the online advertising industry to head legislators off at the pass and convince  lawmakers that new privacy oversight is not needed. Leaders of the major advertising trade organizations – the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s), the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) – have come up with a set of self-regulatory guidelines designed to establish a model of consumer consent for behavioral targeting. The report will accompany an ad campaign to publicize the new standards, with members pledging at least 500 million impressions over the next year and half to guarantee exposure. The seven key principles, involving education, transparency, consumer control, data security, material changes, data sensitivity and accountability, essentially correspond to the principles proposed by the FTC in February.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Fox‘s new animated feature Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (PG) opened on Wednesday with an estimated domestic box office gross of $13.8 million in 4,099 theaters making it the biggest Wednesday open for an animated movie ever, per Box Office Mojo.  The third movie in the Ice Age series, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs takes over the top animated Wednesday spot from Shrek 2, which opened May 19, 2004 with $11.8 million.  Dawn of the Dinosaurs bested Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (PG-13) on Wednesday, with the second Transformers movie still taking in a respectable estimated domestic gross of $10.9 million for the day, putting its 8-day total at an estimated $239.4 million.  No telling which film might take the holiday weekend crown.  Full edition: CYN KIDS

Friday Fun Fact:  While there is no official designation or meaning for the colors of the flag, when the Great Seal of the United States was chosen, the colors were said to mean:

white for purity and innocence
red for valor and hardiness
blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice

Folktales suggest George Washington interpreted the flag in this way:

the stars were taken from the sky,
the red from the British colors,
and the white stripes signified the secession from the home country.
