Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 31, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Scholastic Parent & Child August/September issue will be the largest revenue issue in the magazine’s 16-year history with 93.15 pages, an 8.4% increase over last year.  Nick Friedman is Editor-in-Chief of Scholastic Parent & Child.  While I don’t know what the ads in the mag are for … I’d bet a chunk of them are for apparel. Several baby/toddler apparel companies, including Carters and Gap, are reporting profits and my guess is that this is because clothing is considered an essential for little ones and parents and grandparents will buy multiple items … hey … it is all cute in those sizes.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Universal Music in Belgium partners with Top Floor Entertainment on a new HD CGI 3D animated preschool series entitled Uki (26×5), per C21 Media.  The short-form series is slated to debut on the Flemish kid’s TV network Ketnet in April 2010.  Uki is a non-verbal character that expresses itself (Uki is neither male nor female) though sounds, laughs and smiles, and interactive with its animal friends.  Writers on the series include Belgian TV writer Dirk Nielandt and Diane Redmond (The Magic Roundabout, Postman Pat, Bob the Builder, Koala Brothers etc.).  The series will make its debut at MipJunior in October.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Televisa (Mexico) will premiere the live-action series Kamen Rider Dragon Knight on August 17 on its kids’ network Channel 5.  Produced by Adness Entertainment, the series will air on Televisa’s Channel 5 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 3:30p.  Kamen Rider Dragon Knight is based on the original series, Kamen Rider Ryuki, produced by Toei Company and aired in Japan in 2002.  Most recently, the series premiered on TV Globo (Brazil) on June 29 as part of its Monday-Saturday TV Globinho morning block.

At the Seoul International Cartoon & Animation Festival Promotion Plan, Centraline Animation, a Malaysian animation company, and ToonZip, a Korean content provider, said that their co-production Robot ARPO (52×13), a 3D CGI comedy series, would be available in 2010, per World Screen.  Targeted to K6-11, the series revolves around the adventures of a onetime combat robot that is now household help for a family on earth.  Centraline is also working on an animated movie.

Novel Entertainment partners with Sony Radio‘s station Fun Kids to create a weekly Horrid Henry show.  Broadcast on Fun Kids every Sunday throughout August at 4p, the show will feature Horrid Henry as DJ and will include a mix of jokes, general grossness, as well as tracks from the Horrid Henry’s Most Horrid Album.  This is Novel’s second radio production and follows a CBeebies Radio commission for preschool science show Rockit’s Pocket, which aired earlier this year.

Composer John Ottman (Usual Suspects, Superman Returns) and sound designer Richard Anderson (Valkyrie, Superman Returns, X-Men and Fantastic Four) are creating the score and sound design for Imagi Studio‘s upcoming animated feature film Astro Boy.  Astro Boy is scheduled for domestic release via Summit Entertainment on October 23, 2009.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Actress/singer Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place) has teamed up with Sears for a back to school marketing campaign, which aims to get tweens/teens back to school with style, affordable style.  In addition to showing off the various looks available at the retailer, Gomez is also hosting the Sears Arrive Air Band Casting Call – to create a Sears Air Band, which will perform at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) this fall.  With four air band members set, Sears is holding auditions for the fifth member of the band. Fifi and the Flowertots‘ Fifi-Forget-Me-Not will serve as the official ambassador in Australia in Planet Ark’s School Tree Day today and National Tree Day ( www.treeday.planetark.org) on Sunday.  Olivia Newton John developed national Tree Day in 1996 as a community tree planting event. School’s Tree Day is a dedicated day for students to be actively involved in helping their environment in a hands-on fun and educational way. Each year 200,000+ school kids take part in tree-planting and maintenance projects.
