CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
07/28/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, July 28, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Congressmen Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and Tom Osborne (R-NE) introduced a new bill, also known as The Family Choice Act of 2006, yesterday in Washington DC. Also in attendance for the announcement yesterday was the Parents Television Council, a conservative advocacy group for family programming. The proposed bill would force cable providers to make a choice from the following options:
- Door Number 1: adopt “broadcast indecency standards to their programming between 6a-10p”;
- Door number 2: offer an a la carte programming option that would allow subscribers to pick which channel they don’t want to get “(with some exceptions)” and have those channels blocked, thus they would not pay for those blocked channels, shown as a credit on their bill;
- Door Number 3: develop a family tier that would omit channels with programming deemed unsuitable (aka rated TV Mature or TV-14) for kids between 6a-10p. This third option does not include news or sports programming.
Sharing is nice, or it is when the material is licensed. After years of litigation, Sharman Networks Ltd., owner/distributor of the Kazaa peer-to-peer digital file sharing network, has settled with the movie and music industries. The movie studios and music industry alleged Kazaa had aided piracy and distribution of copyrighted material via the internet. Under the terms of the settlement, Sharman Networks will pay $115 million to record companies and movie studios, according to the New York Times, with the bulk of that award going toward several record companies including Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, EMI Group and Warner Music. Additionally, Kazaa will establish licensing agreements with the various entities and employ technology to prevent the piracy of copyrighted material through its site.
Elsewhere in the music industry, EMI Group and Warner Music Group have broken off their engagement following a European Court’s decision, handed down earlier this month, which then brought into question whether or not this deal would receive the regulatory approvals needed to finalize the pact. The European Court recently found the approval of the Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG merger in 2004 had been in violation of antitrust rules.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
The Sea Monkeys will make their way to the big screen with the inking of deal between Empire Pictures and Transcience Corp., giving Empire the entertainment rights to the Amazing Live Sea-Monkeys property, per Variety. Empire will develop an animated movie based on the Sea-Monkeys.
MORE KIDS STUFF
In preparation for the summer X Games (August 3-6), Starz Edge will get viewers and daredevils ready with the Excessive X Marathon on Wednesday, August 2. Excessive X Marathon starts the day with 23 back-to-back episodes of the extreme sports show Chilli Factor, beginning at 9a and continuing until 8:30p. The evening will include several extreme sports movies including: Riding Giants, a documentary about surfing and the surf culture; Lords of Dogtown, about the birth of skateboarding in Southern California; and Warren Miller’s Impact, an extreme sports documentary about skiers and snowboarders. You know that is all fine and dandy and I’m likely to watch at least some of it, but what about off-road unicycling?
Get ready because this weekend marks the end of the 42-year run of Top of the Pops. BBC Two will air Top of the Pops the Final Countdown this Sunday July 30, 7-8p. In addition to counting down the top songs, the show will feature a look back at some of the best moments from the series archives as well as welcome a number of the best-known hosts back for a visit. Later that evening, BBC Two will run the documentary, Top of the Pops: The True Story, 10p, which will be followed at 11p by Pan’s People: Digging the Dancing Queens. Pan’s People, a dance group, was part of Top of the Pops in the 1970s
Hispanic kids television network Sorpresa! is launching an online talent contest for its viewers. Contestants are encouraged to videotape their particular talent and send or upload the video clip to Sorpresa!’s broadband website located at www.sorpresatv.com. As part of the contest, Sorpresa! website visitors will be able to vote for their favorite monthly contestant. In addition, to monthly prizes through the end of 2006, a highlight special will also be featured on the Sorpresa! network.
Lionsgate has launched the first 10-minutes of its Marvel animated feature film, Ultimate Avengers 2 on Habbo.com in support of the pending DVD release of the movie. The Ultimate Avengers 2 footage will be available for the two weeks leading up to the August 8 release of the Ultimate Avengers 2 release on DVD.
