Cynopsis: DIGITAL
Good morning, it’s Friday, July 18, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

YouTube stars may find themselves household names in a posher set of homes in the coming weeks. Tivo announced a long awaited integration with YouTube yesterday, enabling broadband-connected Series 3 or Tivo HD boxes to download YouTube videos to subscribers’ big screen TVs beginning this week. Unlike the Unbox or TivoCast services, which download to the hard drive, the videos will be streamed from YouTube servers so they won’t clog up your storage. The two companies have worked together to create a user-friendly interface to make navigation of YouTube’s massive library of H.264-formatted videos as intuitive as can be expected from the makers of the idiot proof DVR. Select videos by featured videos, most recent, most viewed or top rated. Pause, fast forward and rewind using the Tivo remote. An informational screen allows you to search by title or artist or select works from the same publisher.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

File this in the “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” category. As Viacom’s lawsuit with the video portal drags on, Lionsgate Entertainment reached a deal to stream clips of its movies on YouTube accompanied by ads and links to electronic sell through, per Reuters

NPR entered the web 2.0 world releasing a public API enabling developers to create applications to help spread its content to third party sites, blogs and profiles. Click here for a few widgets that have already been built, including a radio search tool for the iPhone from Axiom Software and a NPR podcast player for Facebook. Not everything is being let free, unfortunately – no Car Talk, This American Like or Fresh Air, for instance.

Not everyone is going to watch the Olympics on their PCs, but they will want the ability to catch events that occurred in the middle of the night. DirecTV announced an agreement with NBCU to help fulfill this need, offering more than 500 titles on its new on demand service available through the end of the games in both standard and HD. But viewing on NBCOlympics.com should be something to behold. More than 2,200 hours of content will be streamed, giving users the ability to track live stats, access athlete profiles and toggle back and forth between live events being held simultaneously. Note that many of the higher profile track & field events will not be shown online, however. They will be held for later use in NBC’s prime time line-up.

Nickelodeon
introduced a wave of new social networking and community features it will be adding across its huge casual gaming sites Addicting Games and Shockwave. New features include the ability to create personal profiles, compare high scores, create and share games and talk trash. Look for new “create and share” games to be added this summer including Pencil Racer 3 and Moto Rush Extreme.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Online content distributor Mochila is going after politically-minded gen Y’rs signing a new deal with a group of politically-themed sites including BarelyPolitical, best known for the Obama Girl show. Mochila marketplace clients will now have access to content from AntiWar.com, BarelyPolitical.com, Newsmeat.com, RawStory.com, RealClearPolitics.com, TalkingPointsMemo.com and TalkLeft.com.

Online recommendation tool provider Matchmine is tying up with private label video search engine Pixsy to offer third party sites and applications video search driven by personal recommendations. Matchmine users will be able to import their Pixsy video preferences into their Matchmine account to help narrow video searches based on past interests and likes.

Legendary animation producers (and goofballs) Spike & Mike, creators of the long running Spike & Mike’s Sick and Twisted Animation Festival, have staked a claim on the web, offering selected shorts, merchandise and even a UGC section. The site is part of the Mondo Media Network.

CBS’ social music service Last.fm completed a redesign featuring more white space and a simplified interface. Adding songs to your library, making recommendations and searching for songs can now be accomplished with fewer clicks and hassle.

Call for Entries: Collaborative open source digital editing project OpenCut is now accepting registrants for its second contest. This project asks editors to put 30 or 60 second spots together using footage shot from the Alpine Medows ski resort for use in a TV commercial. The contest is perfect for folks looking for experience working with the Red One Digital Cinema camera, according to Erik Espera, Director of Production & Post for Silverado Systems, one of the project’s organizers. The 8 lbs. Red One produces footage in Ultra High Definition 12M pixel resolution. Interested parties can also join OpenCut groups on Facebook and Twitter

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

AT&T wireless or broadband customers chomping at the heals for a look at Will Wright’s Spore game can check out some exclusive content on both platforms. Mobile game Spore Origins and a special AT&T edition of the Spore Creature Creator launched yesterday. Spore hits North American stores September 7 for the PC and Mac along with Spore Creatures on Nintendo DS. Spore Origins for the iPhone and additional mobile carriers will be available September 4.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Microsoft emphasized the good news in its Q2 earnings call, reporting an 18% increase in revenue to $15.84 billion on strong sales related to the Xbox division. Revenue from online services -MSN, Live Search, email and IM – grew by 23% over last year. But the company was forced to alter its guidance for Q3 due to weak market conditions.

Yahoo
reiterated that it is still open to a full takeover at a price of $33/share and that it would seriously consider an offer for its search businesses in a letter to shareholders. CEO Jerry Yang and Chairman Roy Bostock also defended its search partnership with Google, claiming it will bring in more revenue than a similar proposal from Microsoft.

Dish Network managed to successfully launch the EchoStar 11 satellite into orbit this week, giving the service much needed capacity for additional HD channels.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Google disappointed investors when it reported a mere 35% increase in net income yesterday (up to $1.25 billion) on revenue of $3.88 billion, falling short of lofty expectations. CEO Eric Schmidt put on a happy face, blaming the downturn in the economy.

Glam Media announced it is acquiring German marketing firm Codex Media as part of a joint venture with Glam investor Burda Cross Media, a unit of Hubert Burda Media. Burda has a strong position in Germany in the People & Style category with an online market reach in the German market of 66 million page impressions and a market share of 35%, according to Glam.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Comcast Interactive Media hired former VP & GM of Yahoo Entertainment Karin Gilford as SVP of Fancast and Online Entertainment. She will manage Fancast and look to grow the entertainment assets of other CIM sites such as Fandango, Movies.com, Comcast.net and Movies.com, reporting to Amy Banse, President.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

If you enjoyed yesterday’s gag site enabling you to digitally place a friend inside of a straight jacket, then check out JibJab‘s latest sendable ecard “ It’s Time for Some Campaigning,” set to Dylan’s The Times They Are A-Changin’. You can upload a photo then see that person sent flying at the end by a jolt from Uncle Sam. Creators and founding brothers Evan and Gregg Spiridellis are wonderfully even-handed – everyone gets skewered here – proving that political satire can be funny and relevant. The video comes exactly four years after their last election special, This Land! I’m sure they’re asking themselves, has anything changed?

And a reminderCynopsis editorial staff are all on vacation all next week which means no editions for the week.  We will be returning on Monday, July 28.  With that said, however, our Sales and Marketing staff will be available to you all week long, as usual!
