Cynopsis: DIGITAL

07/17/09

Good morning, it’s Friday, July 17, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Worming into celebrity Twitter accounts is one thing. Falling victim to a hacker, who was able to access sensitive corporate information through an employee’s email account, is quite another. Twitter is not the only site to be exposed to hackers, only the latest to raise questions about security measures that well-trafficked portals should take. This latest Twitter hack appears to have been the result of guessing the password of company co-founder Evan Williams via the GoogleApps service, according to reports. The cracked password allowed the hacker to access company finances, biz dev plans, spreadsheets and personal info., including details of his wife’s computer. The hacker went so far as to send some of the juicy details to two prominent tech blogs – TechCrunch in S.F. and Korben in France - and TechCrunch published a document that pegs Twitter’s revenues at $1.54 billion by 2013. (By this time, Twitter hopes to have a billion users worldwide.) Analysts shrugged off the projections as “overly optimistic,” in the words of eMarketer’s Paula Verna. Security experts utilized the whole affair to remind users to choose their passwords carefully and to remind IT departments to beef up encryption efforts.

The newly rebranded Syfy channel is upgrading its presence at Comic Con this year, taking over the Hard Rock Cafe for the duration of the convention; holding a sweepstakes to award a free trip to San Diego on Syfy.com; and hosting a series of panels with the creators and stars of Sanctuary, Stargate Universe, Caprica, Warehouse 13 and Eureka. Syfy.com will stream videos of all Syfy-themed events at Comic con for folks who can’t make it to the coast.

Sir Paul McCartney returned to Letterman on Wednesday at the Ed Sullivan Theater, 45 years after The Beatles first appeared on the same stage for The Ed Sullivan Show. CBS Interactive’s CBS.com and TV.com is streaming an additional set of exclusive songs from the gig.

NAPTE unveiled the winners of its second annual Next TV competition, identifying the best new made-for-the-web series in a variety of categories. The producers of “Dueling VHS,” the winner in the long form category, get the chance to work with YouTube and Google content executives to figure out how to monetize their show. Producers of “The Franki Show” dramatic series win 4 pitch sessions with Lionsgate Digital execs. The full list of 2009 winners, viewable at Stickam.com, reads as follows:

  • Lexus Parts Art (branded entertainment)
  • Natural Hazards (comedy)
  • Bit Museum (documentary/news)
  • The Franki Show (drama)
  • Word to Your Mutha, The Show (lifestyle/DIY)
  • Spot Lab (reality/unscripted)
  • Dueling VHS (long form)

Online social shopping site Tibesti exited beta this week with a social networking/e-commerce hybrid. Consumers who are passionate about products are encouraged to post online reviews and recommendations and recommenders who end up providing leads to retailers earn a share of the commissions the site generates. (Registered users receive 25% of the commission from items sold on their pages plus another 25% from products purchased elsewhere on the site.) The catch is that you must pay a monthly subscription fee if you recommend more than 100 products.

Organizers of the ITVFest announced that Kevin Pollak (Picture This, “Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show”) will receive the event’s first “Independent Award” for his achievements in film, TV and utilization of new media this year. The fourth annual Independent Television Festival kicks off at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in L.A. from July 31.

Last minute stragglers continue to join the digital broadcast revolution. Some 200,000 homes have upgraded to digital television in the last two weeks, according to Nielsen. In the month following the June 12 government-mandated digital TV transition, more than a million homes have made the switch. The most recent gains leaves about 1.5 million American households, or 1.3% of the U.S., unable to receive digital television signals.

US-based mobile content broker WirelessDeveloper Agency and global mobile content retailer, Mobile Streams, are joining forces to distribute content from men’s magazine Maxim to mobile users around the world. Mobile Streams will use its carrier network distribution to provide accessibility to content for mobile users in the UK, Latin America and Asia Pacific on behalf of WDA.

While Microsoft hasn’t gained as much as they had hoped in search, there is some evidence that Bing’s video-friendly interface has boosted video views for the company. The combined views at MSN, Windows Live and Bing totaled 195.6 million streams in June, according to Nielsen, placing it 4th in total streams behind YouTube, Hulu and Yahoo. Microsoft ranked 7th the previous month with 148.4 million streams.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Major League Baseball has been leading the sports world in perfecting and monetizing web streaming – MLB Advanced Media expects to generate some $40 million in subscription revenues this year, it was reported by Sports Business Journal this week. Yet another sport is quietly carving out a business for itself online (if musclebound wrestlers can ever be described as quiet, that is.) WWE.com now streams all 14 its PPV events online including its next big “major” event Summerslam on Aug. 17. The company doesn’t disclose streaming revenue but earnings and usage is up 20% year-over-year, according to Brian Kalinowski, WWE’s EVP of Digital Media. And at $40 a pop, World Wrestling could be the most expensive streamed event on the web. The site has had success in the social networking space as well, attracting more than 450k rabid members, 25k discussion groups and more than 2 million photos posted to the WWE Universe portal. The ability to interact with the wrestlers or guest stars like Seth Green have pushed the site’s engagement numbers to over 10 min./user says Mr. Kalinowski. WWE has also been working to expand distribution on additional outlets this year, distributing ad supported shows to Hulu and negotiating deals to package ad supported content for additional portals including YouTube.
