CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
07/14/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, July 14, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
USA Network has picked up the cable television rights from Buena Vista to air Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in the fall of 2008. To date, the second Pirates film has brought in $183.7 million since its debut on July 7. If the license fee for the film were to run the traditional full 15% of total box office, today that fee would be in the $27 million range, tho several sources have suggested USA will be paying in the $20-$25m range. The difference will likely be made up with a broadcast partner. The network will premiere the original Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on July 15 at 8p.
Astral Media Inc. and Corus Entertainment Inc. have sealed a deal with the Cookie Jar Group, under which the two Canadian broadcasters will acquire the remaining 20% of the Teletoon from Cookie Jar Group for $84.8 million. Upon completion of the deal Astral and Corus will each own 50% of the network. Teletoon launched in 1997 and features both English and French language services. It reaches 3+ million Canadian K2-11, though it offers programming for all ages, and is available in upwards of 7 million households.
Yahoo reports that the official FIFA World Cup website, which it produces and hosts with FIFA, received 4.2 billion page views, more than double the number earned in 2002, and streamed 138+ million video highlights of the World Cup matches during the month-long sporting tournament. To keep up with the footie action throughout the month, folks could also tap into the World Cup mobile website via their cell phones, ultimately drawing 73 million mobile page views. Additionally, the World Cup section of Flickr, the photo sharing website, saw 3.5 million photo page views.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
DreamWorks Animation has completed casting for Shrek the Third. Joining the original casts are Eric Idle as Merlin; Justin Timberlake will play Fiona’s upstart teen cousin Artie; John Krasinski as Lancelot; Amy Poehler as Snow White; Maya Rudolph as Rapunzel; Cheri Oteri as Sleeping Beauty; Ian McShane will play Captain Hook; and the one I can’t wait to see – the incredible Amy Sedaris as Cinderella. Currently slated for release on May 18, 2007, Shrek the Third is being directed by Chris Miller and co-directed by Raman Hui.
The Weinstein Companies (TWC) and Robert L. Johnson’s RLJ Companies, LLC are forming a joint venture to create family comedy movies targeted to African-Americans: Our Stories Films based in LA. TWC’s Dimension Films will handle theatre distribution while Genius Products, Inc. distributes the DVD. As Chairman of the new company, Robert will control the production, acquisition and financial decisions for the films while TWC will retain an equity stake. J.P. Morgan Chase is backing Our Stories with up to $175 million in financing. Our Stories will actually be capitalized at $200 million. Management names will be announced soon.
Muller Media, Inc‘s has tapped director/actor Jeff Celentano to direct its new family targeted feature film, Whiskers. Preproduction, including casting, for Whiskers has begun and the movie is expected to begin filming this October. Produced by Jordan Klein, Whiskers follows the adventures of an intelligent sea lion and the family he befriends. Imperia Entertainment, Inc., an indie film distribution company, recently acquired a majority interest in Muller Media, Inc.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Jagex Ltd, developer/publisher of massively multiplayer online games, has inked a deal making WildTangent, Inc. its marketing and exclusive ad sales partner in the US. Under the deal WildTangent will sell ad space in and around games, and drive subscriptions for Jagex’s RuneScape through its WildTangent Game Network, a distribution channel that reaches 20+ million consumer PCs through its pacts with manufacturers in North America.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Club Libby Lu, the store catering to tween girls, is launching Pink Twinkle, its first full cosmetic line available only at its stores. Actress/singer Ashley Tisdale will serve as the face of the Pink Twinkle line. Products include a shimmer powder brush; a sugar-sweet scented fragrance; an oval vanity mirror trimmed with pink stones; large travel case; a wristlet with glittery lip glosses; roll-on body glitter; star-shaped glitter containers; and a perfume and lip gloss wand combo. The Pink Twinkle tag line is ‘Sparkle You’re a Star.’ Club Libby Lu, Inc., is a subsidiary of Saks, Incorporated.
I spy with my little eye… Scholastic Media will release its new interactive game title, I Spy Mystery (Windows/Mac CD-ROM), this August 2006. Targeted to K6-10, I Spy Mystery includes 13 mysteries that can be solved through clues earned by completing riddles, which then takes them to the I Spy picture screens and the case at hand. I Spy Mystery also features scenes that can be personalized with the player’s name.
Correction: In yesterday’s edition the title of the upcoming Blues Clues DVD should have been Blue’s Biggest Stories.
