~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

August 20th marks the return of Project Runway, now on Lifetime at 10p followed by the new companion series, Models of the Runway at 11p. Host Heidi Klum, mentor Tim Gunn and judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia will lead sixteen contestants as they present their best fashion design acumen.  Finals will have their designs shown during New York Fashion Week, with one finalist chosen as the ultimate winner. Project Runway is produced by The Weinstein Company, Miramax Films, Bunim-Murray Productions and Full Picture Productions.

ABC set the premiere of its new space thriller Defying Gravity for August 2 at 10p. The two-hour premiere launches this series about eight astronauts from five countries who embark on a mysterious six-year international space mission and the intimate relationships that develop between the four women and four men. The series is a collaboration of Fox Television Studios and Omni Film Productions and is produced with Canada’s CTV and Germany’s ProSieben.

TV Land tweaked its premiere schedule for two upcoming series as How’d You Get So Rich? starring Joan Rivers will now debut August 5 at 10p and the hidden camera comedy series Make My Day will follow at 1030p. Both were originally slated to premiere August 6 from 9-10p.

DVR-manufacturer TiVo and electronics retailer Best Buy formed a partnership that they claim will “transform the digital home entertainment experience.” TiVo’s advantage will come through added distribution of its products while Best Buy would receive a digital arena to increase its customer relationships. Jointly, the two companies will explore the development of a new user interface for TiVo DVRs purchased at Best Buy and give Best Buy the chance to further market its digital content services and store promotions.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Lifetime Television signed with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution for the exclusive off-net cable rights to CBS’ comedy The New Adventures of Old Christine starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Lifetime will have access to all 88 existing episodes and the exclusive cable rights to all future episodes. The comedy, produced by Warner Bros. Television will premiere on Lifetime during the fall of 2010.

MTV Networks and Passion Distribution are teaming for the first time as Passion represents the MTV series Fantasy Factory to the international market. Passion will hold the worldwide rights outside the US for season one (12 x 30m) and season two (9 x 30m). Fantasy Factory centers on Rob Dyrdek, skateboarder and entrepreneur and his skateboarding factory located in a 25,000 sq. ft. warehouse and office complex in downtown Los Angeles.

Retirement Living TV (RLTV), the network with programming targeting adults 50+, launched recently on Comcast in the Jacksonville and Miami, FL markets.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT  ~

Comedy Central approved a 10-episode untitled series starring comic actor Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory) produced by Gary Sanchez Productions and distributed by Debmar-Mercury. The comedy features Heder playing an out of work computer IT specialist who returns to his small home town, moving back in with his parents and younger brother. Under the banner Gary Sanchez Productions, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy will all serve as writers and producers. Comedy Central okayed an initial ten episodes of the Heder sitcom and will have the option to order 90 more episodes if the first season proves successful. Debmar-Mercury will hold the series’ syndication rights following its run on Comedy Central.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Rupert Murdoch’s popular British tabloid The News of The World is embroiled in a juicy scandal worthy of the digital age. (Competitor The Guardian, which broke the story, is making much hay out of the news across multiple platforms.) News Of The World journalists are accused of hacking into the cell phones of thousands of prominent British citizens, including Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and model Elle MacPherson, while News Corp.’s New Group Newspapers is said to have paid more than £1m in hush-up money to keep the affair under wraps. Cell phones were hacked into to gain unlawful access to confidential personal data, including tax records, social security files, bank statements and itemized phone bills. There are even accusations that British police were involved. Mr. Murdoch has denied any involvement or knowledge of the affair.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Following a flurry of reports on Thursday, Nickelodeon has issued a statement saying it is not in discussions to purchase the Six Flags park in New Orleans.  The park in question has been closed since Hurricane Katrina hit the area in 2005.  Six Flags Inc. flied or chapter 11 early last month.  Nickelodeon did say that it “has had speculative conversations with many cities, including the city of New Orleans, and companies like Southern Star Amusements, regarding licensing arrangements.”  That said, Nickelodeon has not made or signed any deals.  Full edition: CYN KIDS
