Cynopsis: Kids!

01/04/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 4, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

With the final 2007 Nielsen Media Research numbers in, Disney Channel is the top cable network in Primetime with Total Viewers (2.69 million) for the first time in the networks history, ahead of USA Network which delivered 2.68 million viewers.  Other Disney Channel highlights for 2007 include:

  • Disney Channel was also the top cable network for 2007 in Total Day with Tweens 9-14 (518,000)
  • The network also reports that 2007 was its most watched year in Primetime and Total Day among K6-11 (1.13 million and 606,000 respectively) and Tweens 9-14 (998,000).
  • The preschool block, Playhouse Disney, also earned all-time high ratings with Total Viewers (1.26 million), K2-5 (424,000) and Women 18-49 (233,000).
  • Additionally, based on Live + 7 ratings, the network’s premiere of High School Musical 2 (August 17, 2007) maintained its hold as the most watched telecast of all time in cable TV with Total Viewers (18.64 million), and the year’s top telecast among K6-11 (6.54 million) and tweens 9-14 (6.32 million).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

New Line is shifting the release date for Inkheart, the feature film based on Cornelia Funke’s young adult novel of the same name.  Inkheart had initially been slated for release on March 19, 2008; the new date has yet to be announced.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Two upcoming installments of Frontline focused on kids and adolescents are slated to premiere on PBS this month, while they are not specifically for kids they are about kids and definitely shows I plan to watch.  Frontline’s Growing Up Online takes a look at the private worlds that kids are creating online and how the internet is impacting childhood.  Debuting, Tuesday, January 22 at 9p (check local listings) Growing Up Online features interviews with kids who have established alternate identities and social lives online, as well as with parents, teachers and experts, discussing what they are and/or should being doing to address the various issues, some of which aren’t currently top of mind as issues.  Additionally, Frontline’s The Medicated Child, which focuses on the increase in kids being diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, the drugs prescribed to them and the related risks and benefits, premieres Tuesday, January 9 at 8p.

MARKETING/LICENSING

THQ unveils plans to release the WALL/E video game in conjunction with the release of the Disney/Pixar movie of the same name this summer 2008.  The WALL/E game will release for all major gaming systems, including PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, PSP, Wii, Nintendo DS, Windows PC and Mac, and for wireless devices too.  The game fall under the multi-year pact between THQ and Disney/Pixar, which began in 2004, and includes rights to develop games based on four newly created Disney/Pixar feature films.  The first game developed under the deal was last year’s Ratatouille game title.

STONE SOUP

Everton, the UK football (aka soccer) team is in the midst of inking a deal with 17-year-old player Dan Gosling for an estimated $2.9 million, per the UK press.  Gosling, who played his first professional game at 16, currently plays for Plymouth Argyle, where he has been since December 2006.  Gosling is not, to my knowledge, the youngest pro-football (soccer) player, other young pro-players include Freddy Adu, who played his first pro game at 14, and Lee Holmes, who debuted in his first game at 15, and several other 17-year-olds.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

LazyTown Entertainment has hung out a new shingle in the UK to oversee European brand and licensing business for the LazyTown property.

  • Heading the new London-based office is Katie Foster as Director/Brand & Licensing, Europe.  Her team will work on all product development, marketing and PR teams working on LazyTown.  Foster was most recently, Global Licensing director, ITV (Granada Ventures), where she oversaw licensing for its kid’s, entertainment, drama and sports properties.  Previously she was brand Business Director, HIT Entertainment.
  • Also joining the team as Head of Brand & Licensing, Europe is Catrina Stock.  Stock previously toiled for Inspire GLG as Director/Licensing, Worldwide for the preschool series Boblins, for which she also helped in negotiating broadcast deals and launched the home entertainment campaign.

BKN International expands its Barcelona and London operations to support the licensing efforts for its four upcoming brands set to launch globally in 2008 and 2009, Dork Hunters from Outer Space, Zorro  Generation Z, Stone Age, and pocket Penguin Adventures.  To that end, BKN New Media Ltd. announces several appointments:

  • Jackie Ferguson has signed on as a consultant specifically focused on the UK and Ireland.  She will report to Nicola Andrews, Managing Director.  Most recently, Ferguson was with Entertainment Rights and prior to that with Saban Entertainment.
  • Also in the UK, Jane Kennedy is named VP/International Licensing and Merchandising.  She will also report to Andrews.  Kennedy joins BKN from 4Kids Entertainment, London, where she was Director/International Licensing and Marketing.
  • In Spain, David Recasens was recently named VP/Licensing and Merchandising handling Spain and Portugal.  He will report to Laura Tapias, Managing Director/BKN New Media S.L.  Recasens had been with Cromosoma.
  • Irene Civico is upped to Licensing and Merchandising Manager.  She will also report to Tapias.

Steven Vincent is upped to VP/Music and Soundtracks, Disney Channel.  Vincent supervises music used in original programming for Disney Channel, Jetix, as well as ABC Family.  His responsibilities also include working with series/special music supervisors and producers on original/licensed music and working with recording artists, lyricists and composers in conjunction with Disney Publishing, Disney records, Hollywood Records and Radio Disney.  He reports to Susette Hsiung, SVP/Production, Disney ABC Cable Networks Group.  Vincent was most recently Director/Production and Executive in Charge of Music for the network.

Diego Marchioni adds the title of COO of Wildbrain to his existing roles as CFO of both Wildbrain and Kidrobot.  With his added oversight, Marchioni will implement strategic and operational planning to support the ongoing expansion of Wildbrain and Kidrobot.  He will continue his direct report to Charles Rivkin, President and CEO, Wildbrain.
