Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 30, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Turner Broadcasting has commissioned UK-based Archie Productions to produce six European versions of Staraoke (78×30), Finland’s karaoke-style kids’ series, created by Finland’s Intervisio.  Targeted to K7-11, each week Staraoke features two teams, each with its own host playing with them, in head-to-head competition where contestants gain points based their ability to sing in tune, with scoring determined by voice recognition software.  Their renditions in each round will control the course of a computer-generated avatar on a plasma screen.  Avatars will be chosen from characters that appear on Cartoon Network and Turner’s other kids’ channels.  The UK version of Staraoke will be hosted by Laura Hamilton and Nigel Clarke; with hosts for the versions for Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Poland not yet named.

CBBC commissions BBC Scotland’s Children’s Department for the new kid-aimed game show Copycats (52×28).  Hosted by Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes (TMi), the show pits two families against one another in various activities that challenge their ability to pass along information. Copycats is scheduled to be produced in BBC Scotland’s Studio A at Pacific Quay, Glasgow this May/June 2009.

Disney Channel UK orders a new realty music talent series, My Camp Rock (4×22), from Unique TV, per Broadcast Now.  Based on Disney Channel’s original TV movie Camp Rock, the short run series will feature eight performers (K8-16) getting coached by experts and then competing against one another.  The winner will get the chance to produce their version of a song from the Camp Rock movie, as well as a music video, which will air on the network.  The series is set to air Friday nights.

Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver tapped John Stevenson, who co-directed Kung Fu Panda, to direct the live-action big screen adaptation of Mattel‘s Masters of the Universe property, which of course features He-Man, per Variety.  This marks Stevenson’s first time directing a live-action feature.  Mattel’s Barry Waldo will executive produce the movie.

David Archuleta, the runner up of season 7 of American Idol, makes his acting debut on iCarly and hosts, with Miranda Cosgrove, interstitials on Nickelodeon‘s pre-Valentine’s Day Crush Night, Saturday, February 7, 8-9:30p.  Crush Night begins with Archuleta playing himself on a new episode of iCarly (8p), which revolves around contestants on an Idol-like show.  The rest of he night includes new love-centric episodes of True Jackson, VP (8:30p) and The Naked Brother Band (9p).  Archuleta will perform his hit song Crush during Crush Night on February 7, and his new single, A Little To0 Not Over You, when the block repeats on Sunday, February 15.  Nickelodeon is supporting Crush Night with a sneak peek of all three premieres and additional footage on TurboNick, available now, and the entire Crush Night programming event will be simulcast on Nick Mobile.  In addition, TurboNick will offer a post-premiere instant replay.  Additionally, after the three episodes debut they will be available via iTunes.

Spellbound Entertainment completes further broadcast and publishing deals for its preschool series, The Koala Brothers (39×30).  The deals were brokered by Imira Entertainment, which serves as Spellbound’s licensing agent in the Spanish market.  State broadcaster TVE (Spain) picks up the free TV rights to The Koala Brothers, while Planeta Junior, a unit of Spain’s publishing house Grupo Planeta, takes the publishing rights for novelty coloring and activity books for the property.

Puffin Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, inks a ten-book deal with wildlife expert and TV personality Jeff Corwin for a new kid’s book series.  Puffin’s Karen Chaplin will serve as editor of the series.  The publishing program will launch in September 2009 with three books from Puffin and one book in mass market format from Grosset & Dunlap, also an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group.  The publishing program will feature paperback books for K6-10 including: Jeff Corwin: A Wild Life: The Authorized Biography; Jeff Corwin: Animals and Habitats of the United States; Jeff Corwin: Your Backyard is Wild: Junior Explorer Series (the first book in a fiction series); and All Aboard Reader: Jeff Corwin: Snakes (an early reader).

Habbo (, the teen-targeted virtual world, and Exodus Film Group partner to promoted the DVD release of the animated feature film, Igor.  Each Igor DVD will include a Habbo insert featuring a promotional code that unlocks access to four customized Igor-related virtual items available in-game at

ITV Global Entertainment is looking to build its merchandising and licensing program for its reality series Dancing on Ice over the next year.  ITV Global aims to grow consumer product opportunities including launching a campaign targeted at girls and women in the UK.  Currently in its fourth season in the UK on ITV 1, the series stars Olympic skating duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, the series is hosted by Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby and a panel of judges.  In November 2008, ITV Global Entertainment inked a deal with Ghostlight Ltd., to produce a Dancing on Ice video game for Nintendo DS and Wii.

Topps candy enters into a cross-promotional partnership with Interscope Records and girl group Clique Girlz.  The campaign, which features Topps’ Ring Pop and Baby Bottle Pop brands, begins March 2009 and includes a national TV spot featuring a version of the Baby Bottle Pop jingle composted by Clique Girlz.  The partnership also includes an exclusive Topps’ Baby Bottle Pop-Clique Girlz Concert in NYC this summer.  Fans will be able to follow the group both online and offline, in tween-targeted pubs J-14, M, and Twist, via a diary of their experiences (concerts, TV spots, new album) during the Topps partnership.  Topps is also revamping  Topps had a similar yearlong partnership with Jonas Brothers in 2006.
