Cynopsis: Kids!

01/30/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 30, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Turner Broadcasting has commissioned UK-based Archie Productions to produce six European versions of Staraoke (78×30), Finland’s karaoke-style kids’ series, created by Finland’s Intervisio.  Targeted to K7-11, each week Staraoke features two teams, each with its own host playing with them, in head-to-head competition where contestants gain points based their ability to sing in tune, with scoring determined by voice recognition software.  Their renditions in each round will control the course of a computer-generated avatar on a plasma screen.  Avatars will be chosen from characters that appear on Cartoon Network and Turner’s other kids’ channels.  The UK version of Staraoke will be hosted by Laura Hamilton and Nigel Clarke; with hosts for the versions for Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Poland not yet named.

CBBC commissions BBC Scotland’s Children’s Department for the new kid-aimed game show Copycats (52×28).  Hosted by Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes (TMi), the show pits two families against one another in various activities that challenge their ability to pass along information. Copycats is scheduled to be produced in BBC Scotland’s Studio A at Pacific Quay, Glasgow this May/June 2009.

Disney Channel UK orders a new realty music talent series, My Camp Rock (4×22), from Unique TV, per Broadcast Now.  Based on Disney Channel’s original TV movie Camp Rock, the short run series will feature eight performers (K8-16) getting coached by experts and then competing against one another.  The winner will get the chance to produce their version of a song from the Camp Rock movie, as well as a music video, which will air on the network.  The series is set to air Friday nights.

Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver tapped John Stevenson, who co-directed Kung Fu Panda, to direct the live-action big screen adaptation of Mattel‘s Masters of the Universe property, which of course features He-Man, per Variety.  This marks Stevenson’s first time directing a live-action feature.  Mattel’s Barry Waldo will executive produce the movie.
