NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. live-action feature film V For Vendetta will be simultaneously released to Imax and conventional movie theaters on March 17, 2006. From the producers of the Matrix trilogy, V For Vendetta is not for kids, and is rated R. With that said, teens will find themselves going going to this movie, and my guess it this will be a fun one to see in Imax.  The movie is set in the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain.  The movie is the story of a seemingly mild-mannered young woman who allies herself with a mysterious masked vigilante known as V after he rescues her.  V sparks a revolution when he urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression.  V For Vendetta stars Natalie Portman, Stephen Rea, Hugo Weaving and John Hurt.

Zooey Deschanel joins the cast of the Disney/Walden Media movie adaptation of Katherine Paterson’s young adult novel Bridge to Terabithia, per the Hollywood Reporter.  Deschanel will play the teacher of the two main adolescent outsiders in the story, played by Josh Hutcherson and Annasophia Robb.

Adult Swim has given the go ahead for a second season of The Boondocks.  Twenty new eps will debut in late 2006.  Ten episodes of the initial 15-episode commission have already aired this season. The Aaron McGruder-created series is produced by Rebel Base in association with Sony Pictures Television with Aaron and Reginald Hudlin as exec producers.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Faction, Sirius Satellite Radio‘s action sports/music lifestyle channel, will cover the Winter X Games from Aspen, Colorado beginning tomorrow.  Fraction will feature four days of coverage of the Winter X Games offing stats, scores, news, athlete interviews and the après event goings on.  Despite the fact that the Winter X Games are just weeks before the Olympic Games in Torino, there will be a number of snowboarders who take part in both games.  Got to love those snowboarders!

Okay, here is a question for those of you with kids:  do YOU play video games?  And solitaire on your computer doesn’t count.  According to the Entertainment Software Association new national survey, 35% of American parents say they play computer and video games.  The survey, which was conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates, also found that among these gamer parents, 80% report that they play video games with their children, and 66% (two-thirds) believe that playing games has brought their families closer together.  Gamer parents were also regular voters, and have strong views about government regulation of games.  That said, 85% of all voter parents (both gamer and non-gamer) say that they and solely they should take the brunt of the responsibility for monitoring what their kids’ are exposed to in games.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Namco Bandai America Inc. has laid out the details of its multi-million dollar marketing and promotional campaign to support the release of its new video game, Curious George.  Working with Universal Pictures, Namco Bandai Games America Inc. is a partner in several cross-promotions with such leading consumer brands as Life Cereal, Dole, Cold-Eeze, Carvel and Toy Biz to help promote its Curious George video game.  The Curious George videogame is based on Universal’s upcoming feature film of the same name which opens February 10, 2006.  Promotional sweepstakes, game demos and advertising for the Namco Bandai’s Curious George videogame include:

  • Life Cereal: A one level demo of the PC game is being included as part of an exclusive mail-in DVD offer featured 17+ million boxes of Life brand cereal.
  • Dole: A cross-promotion that will appear in the video game and on 10,000 store displays nationwide.
  • Cold-Eeze: A nationwide online sweepstakes with Cold–Eeze and Kidz-Eeze Cold Medicine
  • Carvel: an on-package promotion featured on 1.2 million Carvel cake products at Carvel’s 9,500 stores nationwide.
  • Toy Biz: this is a Namco Bandai Games America and Toy Biz joint advertising initiative on more than one million pieces of Curious George toys.

CBS Consumer Products has granted Bethesda Softworks the rights to publish a series of video games based on all the Star Trek series for gaming consoles, handhelds and PCs.  Set to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Star Trek TV series, Bethesda has two titles slated for release in September 2006, Star Trek: Legacy for Xbox 360 and PC, being developed by Mad Doc Software, which will support Multiplayer game play; and Star Trek: Tactical Assault for Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, featuring real-time spaceship combat, being developed by Quicksilver Software.

The Candie’s brand spring ad campaign will feature Hilary Duff, Ciara, Michelle Trachtenberg and Samaraie Armstrong.  Created by Iconix Brand Group, Inc.’s in-house marketing team, the Candie’s multimedia ad campaign includes TV, print, internet and in-store ads, and will debut this March in issues of fashion, entertainment and lifestyle magazines.  In selecting these four different young stars for its ad campaign, Candie’s hopes to convey that its brand has something for all types of young women.  Additionally, Duff’s single SuperGirl, off her CD Most Wanted, serves as soundtrack for the TV commercial.  Candie’s products are available exclusively at Kohl’s Department Stores, which will introduce Candie’s home, swim and sunglasses product lines this spring.  In the upcoming months Duff, Ciara, Trachtenberg and Armstrong will also be integrated into the Kohl’s spring marketing effort.

MGA Entertainment has teamed with Ztar Mobile to introduce a Bratz Mobile phone, which will be available at select Wal-Mart locations.  The phones come pre-loaded with 50 minutes of nationwide airtime and include text messaging, internet browsing as well as customized with wallpapers featuring the Bratz gals, ring tones by Roxxi and Sasha (two of the Bratz), screen savers and Bratz skins.  Additionally, parents program the phones using a pin number, to allow their kids to call only those numbers they approve. The Bratz Mobile phones are manufactured by Sony Ericsson.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
